Good point, the money is gonna be spent one way or another (or by one program or another).

BTW: this is the expected consequence of a rather unsuccessful stimulous plan.

Fern

Incorrect. The current situation is the result of an overextension of credit to support a speculative market in real estate, and to create the impression of a recovery from the tech bust. Not to mention an ongoing dearth of actual investment in productive endeavor in this country. "Jobless Recovery", remember? This so-called recovery will be worse, for reasons posted earlier...

There is no counter to big predatory capitalism other than big govt, soccerballtux. If you think that the existence of the middle class as we know it is an artifact of Capitalists' generosity, your cognitive processes have been crippled.

I don't have an opinion on unemployment extensions.
I'm against using anesthesia in surgery.
Your next open heart... man up. FU.. the anesthetist!
Take it like a real man.
Same-o with the loss of a job.
We all know the unemployed are just lazy turd puppies.
Just as those turd puppies that still demand an anesthetist.
WHat is hAppEninG to oUr cOunTrY ???? :(

Nice. I know a few friends who would love an extension to their government financed paid vacation. They use the money for beer and steaks and sit on their asses watching TV all day. I asked one of them yesterday why he wouldn't find a job and he told me the only one he could find was at McDonalds and his unemployment check is twice what he would earn at McDonalds.

An intelligent decision.

The accepted economic theory is that the longer you give unemployment benefits, the less incentive for the unemployed to look for employment.

Maybe under normal circumstances but it probably doesn't fit for the current situation. A better solution to our current environment is to gradually reduce UC as the economy gets better and more jobs are available.

Most of us will fare pretty badly and be reliant on SS just like old folks are now.

I would think a lot of the middle class boomers that have retired or will retire soon have a pension in addition to SS. If you aren't saving now and just have SS you are going to be a lot worse off at retirement.

Why do you think the economy will get better anytime RSN? The last so-called recovery was called the "Jobless Recovery" for a reason. Refi cash-outs on cheap money and easy credit were the driving force behind consumer spending, and that well has been sucked dry... Private equity firms have engaged in so much asset stripping that the bones are pretty much picked dry... the proceeds from all that whisked offshore in investments and balance of trade deficits...

Other than optimism, what leads you to think that things will improve substantially?

This is probably true in a lot of cases. I know a lot of white collar workers who just refuse to even try to get a job because they can collect unemployment for so long. They can work, they choose not to.

When I was unemployed (nov 2008-jan 2009), my gross income went down from 1700 per week (working) to ~320 per week (on unemployment). My costs went up by 200 per week as well (COBRA + Cell phone that used to be paid by company).

Bull fucking shit I was motivated to collect unemployment.

With the numbers that drastically different, I'd be shocked if any white collar worker (40k - 120k) would ever be motivated to sit on unemployment.

No white collar worker with any responsibilities will be happy with it for long at all.

I don't think that's even legal in TX. You have to apply to or search for a certain # of jobs every week, and document them.

This is normally true, but with such high unemployment, nobody is checking this at the moment. The likelihood of your job search documentation getting "audited" is pretty near zero (for now).

Well he was talking about his friends and aquiantences.

Would I have taken a $250 a week job? No, because that wouldn't have covered my bills. So he's right in some regard.

It still does not mean that I was not motivated to find a job.

The Unemployed Now Have Their Own Union, and It's Catching on Quickly
It's been only a month that a union for the unemployed has come into existence through an ingenious grass-roots organizing campaign, but its numbers are growining quickly.

It's been only a month that a union for the unemployed has come into existence through an ingenious grass-roots organizing campaign. In case you haven't heard about it, the union's name is "UR Union of the Unemployed" or its nickname, "UCubed," because of its unique method of organizing.

UCubed is the brain-child of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), whose leaders feel that the millions of unemployed workers need a union of their own to join in the struggle for massive jobs programs.

The idea is that if millions of jobless join together and act as an organization, they are more likely to get Congress and the White House to provide the jobs that are urgently needed. They can also apply pressure for health insurance coverage, unemployment insurance and COBRA benefits and food stamps. An unemployed worker is virtually helpless if he or she has to act alone.

Joining a Cube is as simple as it is important. (Please check the union web site: www.unionofunemployed.com). Six people who live in the same zip code address can form a Ucube. Nine such UCubes make a neighborhood. Three neighborhood UCubes form a power block that cntains 162 activists. Politicians cannot easily ignore a multitude of power blocks, nor can merchants avoid them.

The union is built from the ground up. Cube activists will select their own leadership in each cube, neighborhood, block and higher group as well.

Jobless Union's Encouraging Progress in One Month

The UR Union of Unemployed (or UCubed) already has members in over 300 zip code addresses and 43 states, reports Rick Sloan, acting executive director of the union. Seventy-five cubes are up and running. For the first month, 19,998 people visited the site and viewed over 138,000 pages of content.

The union's Op-Ed article appeared in 62 newspapers, ranging from the "Black News" to the "Mexican American Sun," and from the "Las Vegas Tribune" to the "Senior Life of Northern Indiana." Total circulation exceeded 12 million readers,

UCubed put out three press releases last month, informing politicians in Washington that the union of unemployed will be watching--and reacting--to their vote on the latest job proposals of the Obama administration.

It is to the advantage of the AFL-CIO and Change to Win to encourage their unemployed members to participate in the UCubed organizing campaign. It is important for organized labor to display meaningful sympathy and solidarity with those who have been without a pay check for many months. A large union of unemployed workers can be an important ally in political campaigns and a source of legions of volunteers. When those unemployed workers finally get back to their jobs, we want them to have a favorable memory of how unions stood by their side.

Sweet lord. We are heading for communism if not full blown serfdom in our desperate search for the triple-breasted woman.

What's truly unsettling about this is that the unemployed are now such a large bloc that they have their own advocacy groups. They are now their own constituency. In the past we've never asked how a candidate was "polling among the unemployed." I think that's coming soon.

Fuck the "poor".

After working retail, I see all of these people who live off off unemployment buy themselves Iphones, Ipods, computers, and then tell their kids that they are going to go shopping for steak with their Link cards.

That is bullshit. They shouldnt be getting that type of stuff when living off the government when I have to work 40 hours a week just to afford to live.

Off course, where I work, the majority of the population is of a certain ethnicity. I am unsure if this fact corresponds to almost 1/3 of our customers being on either unemployment or Social Security/Disability.

Then of course, every other person is a Preacher and gets a tax exempt number. A city of 20,000 does not need 100 preachers that use the tax exempt number on their big screen TV or cell phone.

please state the ethnicity. i have a guess and i would like to know if i'm right.
