I got invited to a 'young adult' party for members of my family's church when I was 27. I went just to see what it was like and maybe try to meet some girls. It was complete fail.

youth group = group of people with depression desperately seeking attention

I dunno, for some that might be true.

For others, they are just so damn brainwashed, it's their own little group of fellow brainwashees that they can mingle with and have "a good time", in their brainwashed style.

My roommate last year, I don't know if he was technically in a youth group, but he regularly attended bible-study on campus (helped lead it sometimes too), and quite often attended similar "parties" for like-minded people - which is also a time they like to invite others to try and slowly brainwash them into joining their cult.

He certainly wasn't depressed. He was quite outgoing, happy, and intelligent (though very ignorant). It was depressing, for me, to watch someone fall so deep into that rabbit hole of religion... he was completely set on that belief system - everything in the bible was accurate, when the world is under one kingdom the rapture is imminent, dinosaurs or some lizard representative was on that big ark, evolution is BS, was "more likely to believe the Book of Genesis over science's estimates for the age of the earth" (his words), yada yada yada...

ignorance is bliss... I guess.

When my roommate invited me to some of their little Christian Youth parties (on multiple occasions), I would quickly entertain the idea of trying to meet some ladies there.

And then I realized, it was a Christian Youth party. I wouldn't find young ladies, I'd find cultists. Not looking for a relationship with someone of that type, and judging by some of the characters he hung around with, they were likely all under the impression that sex before marriage is a ticket to hell - so I wouldn't have even been able to even get a good one-nighter out of the deal.

Though, it could have worked. Find an attractive lady, discover she is as equally disturbed with the whole situation as I, and likely dragged there by a friend... say "wanna get out of this depressing party" and together escape before the kool-aid is served. :)

Christian parties are where you find the women that clean the house, and cook you dinner. It might not be all bad :^D

lol I remember youth group. As I recall in consisted of watching Touched by an Angel episodes. When I finally got the nerve to tell my pastor I was an atheist. His only reaction was to say "I had a feeling" This was what 18 years ago now.

Go out there and join them. Take part in the conversation, sit close and get to know them. But first do a bunch of sit-ups and push-ups til you are hot and sweaty. Again, sit close and make eye contact as much as possible. Hand on knee.

lol :D

They might like it though!

Here's some more info:

He seemed to really want to stop going but they guilt tripped him into coming back; scheduled the next youth meet at his house (peer pressure) so it would be easier for him to attend.

Their youth pastor is a married guy w/ no kids -- 30ish

Gee, I wonder what he could do to end this relationship.

Beer cans? Check.
Porn? Check.
Skeptical Inquirer? Check.
The People vs. Larry Flynt on top of the DVD stack? Check.
ATOT party double booked?
Obama campaign poster? Check.

Maybe after they leave you should have an intervention with him. Teach him about growing a pair of balls.

I bet he's gay...not that there's anything wrong with that of course.

22 and in a youth group? My parents took me to church when I was a kid, and I was in a youth group. But I was a youth. I was like 12 or something. 22 seems a little old for a youth group.

It's a fairly common age for a more "adult-style" youth group, often college-centered.

Some churches often try to create a place for young Christians to gather, so they constantly see people like them. It's a way to battle "the evils" of college, you know... parties, a place full of alcohol, drugs, and sex. That and being around people that might say naughty things, like "wtf... God? Doesn't exist, bo." That could be very harmful to an impressionable Christian, so it must be avoided.

Hell, my roommate had a book called "How to Stay Christian in College."

There was probably a chapter about how to deal with people like me. Should have checked, if he was prepared for dealing with people like me, I'm going to be quite upset. I was hoping to completely shatter his view of things. :D
Then again, to people like that, I probably look like a demon trying to taunt them with obnoxious remarks meant to make them upset. lol

"Intervention" sounds awfully dramatic. Here's how I see it going.

Knock, knock, open door.

Hi, Bob. May we come in?

Sure.

How's it going?

Fine.

We've missed you in youth group lately, and we were wondering if everything was okay.

Yeah, everything's fine, just really busy at work.

Yeah, I know what you mean, same here.

It's crazy, isn't it?

Sure is. Well, if you need anything, please let us know. We sure miss you at youth group and really wish you can start coming again.

Thanks for stopping by. I miss you guys too and I really hope work lets up so I can start coming again.

Small talk. Good byes. End of story.

Something similar happened to me once!

When I was growing up I went to a couple youth group things with religious friends. It was always some sort of game or sport and occassionally 5 min talking about god, then food and more fun.

So when I left home and went to University, I didn't know anyone and some friendly religious nut stopped me on the path and asked if I wanted to go to a youth group event. Sure! I thought, meet some people, play some sports... No. It ended up being a lengthy session talking about god and what do I believe in.

Being the way I am and the fact I didn't know anyone else in the city, I went a couple times to see if there was any fun events I rememberd as a kid. The last event I went to was a halloween party at some hotel banquet room. I met another girl there in the same situation as me. We started chatting about how rediculous the whole thing was and what the hell were we still sticking around for. Luckily there was a bar in the hotel (no alcohol at the party of course), and a hot bartender we could flirt with.

It ended up being a fun night, but, I wouldn't recommend it for picking up ladies.

You guys are ridiculous. Nothing you described is even remotely like the youth groups I've been in and even lead. Believe it or not, Christians are in fact humans and not biologically different than you. We probably had more fun than most people in this forum ever did growing up. It was my first youth pastor that taught me how to TP a house. The youth pastor I worked with taught me poker. In fact, we have poker events all the time. Sometimes for cash, sometimes for church fund-raisers. We've gone to concerts, and even hosted concerts. Had a big rap concert in a park near my house a couple of years back with rappers from Seattle to Australia, pretty amazing.

There is nothing depressing or brainwashed about being a Christian. In fact most Christians would tell you that it is quite the opposite. It's real easy for you to make insults like that without any actual comprehension, knowledge, or understanding whatsoever.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that my youth of drinking, fighting, and fucking was vastly more fun and exciting. Unless you had a lot of guys throw a pipe bomb under your porch when they got kicked out of your parties?

Well fun is subjective, but what you described doesn't sound fun at all. Concerts, card games, and tping houses tends to be more universally fun :p

I became a Christian between my sophomore and junior years in college and definitely had more fun after.

It's pretty amazing how you can go anywhere and find "family".

I was staying at a hotel a couple of years on business and was going through a difficult time. There was a biker group doing a charity ride that was staying at the hotel. They were set up in the lobby showing off their bikes, socializing, etc. Nice folks. Anyway, I ran into a Christian group there that had an outreach to bikers. I briefly told them my situation and asked them to pray with me, which they did. It was nice to have like-minded people 800 miles from who cared for me and supported me.

I was born and raised in a christian household. My Mom had my brother and sister and I going to Sunday school and church every week until I was in my teens at which point I had had enough and stopped going.

Sure, the people are nice for the most part but some churches you get the same kind of clickish groups and judgemental people as you do everywhere else in society. They are no better or different or accepting of others than anyone else I've met religious or not and frequently they are worse.

I just flat out don't believe in any of that nonsense and I get downright angry when I see some of the hateful bullshit and lies spread by so called religious people in the name of God.

An ex-girlfriend of mine told me that she kept going to youth group when she was in high school even though she'd pretty much lost faith in the whole religion thing because it gave her a place to hang out with friends, play sports, etc. Apparently she also hooked up with lots of guys from her youth group, so apparently church is a good way to get laid. Almost made me wish I'd gone to church when I was a teenager.
