Ubisoft: Our DRM will "evolve, improve"

Ubisoft's told Eurogamer that its "online services platform" for PC games will "evolve and improve" and is most certainly here to stay.

"Most forthcoming Ubisoft PC titles will use our online services platform," a spokesperson explained, adding, "As with any online technology, we are constantly working to evolve and improve it."

Ubisoft's online platform requires PC gamers to be connected to the internet while they play. But problems arise when authentication servers are unavailable or unresponsive. This was felt first with Assassin's Creed II and Silent Hunter V and then more recently with Settlers 7.

The result has been fans unable to play games they've purchased, sometimes for days at a time.

Upcoming Ubisoft PC titles include Splinter Cell Conviction, Pure Football, R.U.S.E., I Am Alive TrackMania 2, Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands and Ghost Recon Future Soldier.

Just a FYI for those of you looking to purchase any of the games listed above.

It's also worth noting (even though it's been mentioned in other threads) that Ubisoft's DRM in Assassin's Creed 2 has been cracked using server emulation.

Ubisofts newly introduced copy protection, requiring PC gamers to be always connect to the internet, has been cracked by an independent developer called "dormine", German GamersGlobal.de reports.

The hacker managed to record the encrypted client-server communication by using self signed TLS certificates and provides a complete server emulation designed specifically for the Assassin's Creed 2 PC version. Making the game playable offline and bypassing the Ubi.com account requirement entirely. GamersGlobal also mentions, that while Assassin's Creed 2 is cracked, upcoming titles will still be secured for a certain amount of time after release.

They can do what they want and evolve it however they want. It still won't change the way I feel and I won't be buying any games from them any more.

It shouldn't be hard to improve on something that sucks so hard. I have a feeling their idea of "improving" is different than mine, however.

I find it funny that Ubisoft refers to their DRM as an "online services platform". What services are they actually providing besides the "service" of potentially not being able to play your legit purchased game? Most of the titles they release are single player games.. what a joke.

It's too bad they had to do something like this. I played the R.U.S.E on Stream, and really enjoyed the game, but I will not buy it because I will not support DRM that will drop me out of a game in single player mode if I lose my internet connection.

Ubisoft DRM is a neural net processor; a learning computer.

Then you'd assume it would quickly learn it wasn't ever going to actually accomplish it's goal and should "terminate" itself, right? But, then again, it's probably programmed so it can't self-terminate so I guess we're still screwed. :)

A strange game. The only winning move is not to play. How about a nice game of chess?

Well, this means I can take Ubisoft off my list of game developers that I will buy games from.

I'm almost always connected to the internet and rarely have connection issues but this level of DRM is unacceptable. I'm just glad that most of their games are of little interest to me.

I hope that other gamers, like those in this thread, decide to vote with their wallet. Ubisoft will do something about it when their sales really start to tank. If this happens, it will probably take several years before they notice and make changes.

No, it doesnt.

Definitely doesn't sound like steam.

I really wonder why Ubisoft even bothers making PC games anymore if they're just going to make them unplayable. I suppose there's still a little bit of money to be made, but if sales just tank because of their DRM, it wouldn't surprise me if they just stop making PC games altogether.

The people still buying these games should be horsewhipped.

Sadly, this IS the future of gaming. I doubted them at first but OnLive is on to something. You'll eventually see gaming more online via clouds and played on closed systems like internet enabled TVs and iPads. The end user has absolutely no access to the software.

Nah, it'll just cause another gaming implosion. It'll rebuild . . . but probably start the cycle again because of idiot consumers.

I agree with the others and am prepared to vote with my wallet. No Ubisoft games for me from now until they get rid of this crap.

Too much latency, imagine always having 100ms input lag. Sorry but it may be the future 50 years down, but not yet.

Except it's current IQ is still below 20.

From Red Dwarf, concerning the IQ of the ship computer:
Lister: Hang on. You can't do this. Holly's got an I.Q. of 6,000.
Holly: Yeah. Right on.
Queeg: Is that what he told you?
Lister: Well what is it, then?
Queeg: It has a six in it, but it's not 6,000.
The Cat: What is it?
Queeg: Six.
Holly: Six? Do me a lemon. That's a poor I.Q. for a glass of water.

Sorry, your internet connection has become unstable. Please try to play again later.

Oh, and DC just got nuked.

Yeah, I opened a link earlier titled something like "Ghost Recon Future Soldiers are like F-16s on Legs." And then partway through scanning the article, I remembered that it was a Ubisoft title. Said "Screw that." and closed the page.

I have zero interest in Ubi titles until this crap goes away.

Theres tons of people who have bought Settler's 7 and haven't been able to play it for the past 3 weeks. This DRM is terrible.
