I'd say the problem with the updates was not the hats. Personally, they lost me when they came out with the crazy deconstruction system and in-game store. For someone trying to come back to the game it has become very daunting. Am I supposed to buy things at the store? Why the fuck are they so expensive? How do I deconstruct things? WTF are these medalions?

And certainly hats and weapons added to that. Not so much because they exist, but because of they chaos Valve allowed them to be added to the game under. Most people will say that the additional Valve created hats and weapons made sense to some extent, they made the classes deeper while keeping them similar. Then came the ridiculous bullshit hats and whatnot, that just made classes more confusing to identify and weapons more ridiculous to categorize.

How would you prepare a new player for TF2 and all the weapons in it now? For instance, I used to be able to say, that pyro either has a regular flame thrower or one that does more damage from behind. What would you tell someone now?

Eventually, TF2 becomes MegaTF2. And not everyone wants that.

Here's the thing. You don't need to acquire or use any of the new weapons. If you want to you certainly can, but there is absolutely no need for any of them in order to have fun or win. Really, don't WORRY so much about it and just play it. It's like you're stressing over it for absolutely no reason.

When I quit playing they just added the new gun for the medic, which IIRC was obtainable via an achievement. Is the other crap obtainable through achieves or ??? I suppose I should look it up, but at work some of this gaming stuff is blocked...

Some of it is achievements, but I think all of it can be obtained by random drops. Out much of it can be created.

It isn't so much about using the weapons yourself. But also understanding your enemies, what they are attacking you with and how to defend yourself.

I understand what you are saying, I can just run around oblivious firing in various directions and having fun and not caring about my k:d ratio. However, you also have to realize not everyone has or wants to have that kind of casual oblivious fun with their games. Some of us want to understand and be able to make informed decisions. It would be like if you gave every piece on the chessboard 4+ other alternate moves and then told me I can still play chess the same way. I can, but your queen will just move like the rook and then do a knight jump checkmate and I will feel pretty retarded.

It feels a lot spammier to me personally. They got rid of the nades but now there's all kinds of random things being tossed around. It just seems like their catering to the casual gamer crowd more than the competitive scene. I was a qwtf player so I'm a little biased.

Edit: Doesn't matter to me that much but the new hats and weapons make the game run crappier.

New weapons doesn't change the game.
BS. Warpath has slowed to a crawl thanks to the reduced cost / faster pyro airblast, God dang wrangler and Robin Hood mofos spamming arrows. In addition, a lot of polycount items (eg. spy's fez being the most common) are outright banned from tournaments (Intel LANfest, UGC, etc.)

True, if you just started playing TF2, and they gave you this gigantic shitload of stuff to use and figure out, then it would be confusing. But, they don't; they start you with only the default loadout. Then, through unlocking achievements or by random, you gain new equipment. If you're new, you're going to stop, take a look at it, and think "hmm, would this be better for me or not? Let's try it out!", and then you try it and decide if you like it. That's how it went for us being new players and is how it will go for incoming new players.

Have questions about certain armor/weapons/etc..? Check the official blog, or the wiki, or any other numerous resources that explain them.

Granted, looking at it right now, having played since being an Alpha tester, it does seem confusing, but because I've played from vanilla to now, as any new player will do, it's not as confusing as it seems.

Actually a shaka mod for tf2 would be kind of fun.
Shaka's custom tf? If so, he already indicated long ago he would not have anything to do with TF2 since it's not the same and that the source code isn't available.

I do agree that over time my FPS rates have dropped with the continual updates so, no it's not really fixed.

i use basically all the stock weapons. if you don't want the new weapons just don't use them instead of bitching about it.

I stopped playing for a year or two right in the middle of their class updates. TF2 used to be a simple game. 9 classes, 3 weapons each. You play each character for an hour and you understand the game.

I went back to play it and I hated it. It was not as simple of a game. I did not like getting killed and having to ask myself "Why did I die there?" "Why am I slowly losing health?" "Why am I stunned?"

I didn't like it anymore. That is my opinion. I found another simple game in Monday Night Combat.

TF2 jumped the shark with the Demoman update, and it's been ruined even further with the ridiculous hat nonsense. Ugh, I miss the old TF2, which I absolutely loved.

So sad, what this game has become...

Since I'm thoroughly bored with Bad Company 2, I figured I might as well re-install TF2 to check out the update.

Everything is broken. Item server is sporadic, all servers have been forced to 20 second respawn, all servers are being forced to hold an open slot and respond with server full messages, frequent lag spikes, some servers have lost their animations (e.g. reloads, firing, switching).
