The US embassy in Cairo stated it's opposition to two activities, 1) denigrating religion, 2) violence. In no way shape or form did it take responsibility or subsequently apologize for any actions taken during this whole episode.

There isn't a cause or a religion that someone won't abuse. The relevant things are whether they are perceived by the majority as acceptable and what the influence of it is. Excepting the Vatican I know of no nation which officially puts Christianity above any law. The myth of "Christian America" is just that. Certainly there is influence, but you won't find a Constitutional statement to the effect of "The Bible is the only legitimate source of law and all amendments and laws will conform to it."

I suggest you look up the Constitutions of many ME nations and see if that's the case.

While I believe the majority of Muslims are peaceful people, there is a tendency to accept such acts as we see as justifiable. Looking at the Quaran disposal in Afghanistan and Karzai's response it would he difficult to argue otherwise.

And that is the rub. Not that the religion itself is incompatible with civility, but as it is implemented it takes official precedence in government and society.

Imagine a scenario where the Old Testament were to be viewed in government and society as the Quaran is.
