Think back to the few times you've looked at the top of the doors as you're exiting some place like Wally World; chances are good it says this boilerplate text we all know:
THIS DOOR TO REMAIN UNLOCKED DURING (NORMAL) BUSINESS HOURS
There's a reason why that statement is there: by law it has to be, because it is intended to inform the consumer -- you -- that the store has to keep the doors open as long as they are "open". This means that even if they close at 6 they can't stop people from coming in at 5:30.

In short, there's a possibility that WallyWorld closing 20 minutes early was illegal, and it's almost certain that if they weren't closing early then that kid locking the doors was illegal. When you're talking to the General Manager on Monday or Tuesday (it won't be that kid) make sure you point out the boilerplate text above the door that the kid was closing.

And yeah, maybe you should have budgeted your time a little better, but to be fair I didn't even know WallyWorld closed at 6 today until I wandered in there for something on the way to the folks' place. They still should have let you in. The kid telling you "screw you" was completely out of line, even if it was the worst day of work in his life. If you can't take the pressure of CSR work on Christmas Eve then maybe you should look for work in a less customer-oriented career.

WTF are you talking about?? That sign that says the doors must remain unlocked during business hours is there by law from the FIRE DEPT in case there is a fire and people need an unlocked exit. it wasnt put in place because the government regulates when a store stores hours. the store can lock the door anytime they want just as long as they have an employee there with a key to let people out but they can certainily deny people from entry and not be breaking the law.

There is no such law.

Oh, really??

Tell that to the owner of Costco!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We were going to close @3:00 on Xmas eve and I told everyone that called that if everything on layaway was picked by 3:00 we would close. If not I would stay until 6:00.

I ended up staying until 5:00 and only left then because it was dead.

No way would I have turned someone away at the door, especially if they had called and been told we would be open till 6:00.

And I sure wouldn't have said what he did. But then i had nothing going on and no one waiting for me...

Even if I had I wouldn't have spoken to anyone like that.

If you say your are gonna close at 6, then you close at 6. That simple. When I worked in a supermarket, nobody left till the store was cleaned up and everyone's scehduale reflected that. no one left when the store closed, it was more like an hour after the store closed. Also, if we closed the store early, there would be lots of people who would have been jobless after the holidays. I fail to see how people can argue about this.

I think he just made the story up.. or left some details out, like how he got smart with the kid or something.

I'm with the OP on this one... unacceptable, if the store is open until 6 it needs to stay open until 6, and if the imbeciles at Wal-Mart want to avoid having agitated employees closing off an 11-hour shift, the solution would be to schedule more people for shorter shifts, not closing early!!

:|

BTW, don't give up. I bet that 20 year old kid was probably a department manager, if that (he could have been BSing you), there's plenty of guys above him and plenty more above them.

Don't blow a gasket he's a jerk. He has a ****** job probably going home to a crappy trailor. Waking up the next day getting cigarettes and a Git R Done T-shirt for Christmas while relishing that fact that his 400lb dad probably won't beat him on Christmas.

Screw the haters. It's incredibly unprofessional to say that stuff to a customer, especially when unprovoked, regardless of on what day it was said.

It's too bad that this incident upset you so much.

There are many disappointments we'll all have in life. Get a grip on! Just because you had a run-in with a store employee, why the grief? Move on. Chalk it up to experience and maybe you'll be better treated the next time you go to Walmart.

I have shopped at Walmart and on many occasions, the employees have really shown courtesy and service. There are many who do a bang-up job and never recognized for their efforts. Sometimes we bring it upon ourselves when we purport the 'me attitude'. Action gets reaction. Life is too short, think positive. Maybe, I'm in the minority......

how bout you shop at walgreens if you really needed baking oil? there's like a walgreens every 3 blocks in most american towns.

the guy you talked to was probably off the clock when he told you to screw yourself, so i see no problem with him telling you his mind after hearing your sob story about driving 20 minutes.

i, myself, was doing some late night shopping on christmas eve, and tried wal-mart only to find them closed. I didn't cry about it or play the blame game. It was my fault for waiting the last day to shop.

put yourself in the wal-mart employees shoes. He's a manager, probably making $9 an hour as a managerial position. As a manager he has to deal with all the whiney customers for 11 hours. Damn, you should feel special he even ackknowledged you, I would have just walked right by you and not said a word, and if you followed me then I would have given you a few other choice words.

i'd have punched him in the eye and said 'merry christmas'

but, then again, you went to shop at walmart... you probably deserved it.

EDIT: why didn't you push the dude aside? i mean, honestly, i'd have just pushed his scrawny ass out of the way and told him to pop his dick pimples while i was getting some stuff.
