I would institute Heinlein's idea (from the novel, not the movie, Starship Troopers) wherein people born in the USA are not automatically "citizens" with the right to vote. Citizenship is something that would have to be earned, either through military or civil service, or in some other unspecified fashion (the details of which would be subject to some debate). The reasoning here being that you are not qualified to help make decisions for the well-being of the country unless you have chosen to have served the country.

Another thing I would likely do is dramatically increase the liabilities corporations face for negative business practices, and dramatically reduce the influence they have in the political arena. We do not need this country being run by oil barons.

1. Stop being the world's super power by reducing the size of the miltary to what is necessary to protect the US.

2. Use the savings from #1 improve the quality of life for people who live here:

a. repair and improve the infrastructure
b. make health care affordable
c. reduce taxes
d. do what is necessary to make the edcucation system work for anyone

These are some examples of what could be done with the billions of dollars the US uses to "influence" the rest of the world.

Pretty soon the South will be the only productive place left in the US, the uinions are destroying everywhere else. Do some research and I bet you find the places with the largest economic growth will be in the southern portion of the country while most other places are declining to some degree.

More education can raise you up to "fairly well-off", but being truly rich takes either a lot of drive and a good bit of luck, or a good inheritance.

It depends upon what you consider the haves and have-nots. Are the haves only the truly rich? If so then that means the have-nots is just about everyone. I consider the have-nots to be the poor and even certain levels of what most consider middle class and my statements stand. The average person is lazy and does not respond well to education...they simply do what they have to to get by and thus do not take advantage of the opportunities before them, and that lodges them firmly into a life of mediocrity or worse.

Are you kidding me? If we kick out all the illegals in this country, who's going to do their jobs? They do the hardest of the hard jobs and the worst of the worst. The only reason they have jobs is because Americans don't want to do them.

Personally, I'd:

1) Enter into the Kyoto Agreement
2) Start the draft

#2 isn't pretty, but it'd help get the job done in Iraq AND Afghanistan.

18 Illegals packed in a Van here yesterday on I-12 hit by a tired American.

4 Killed When Truck Hits Van On I-12

4:40 pm CDT July 25, 2005

LACOMBE, La. -- A van packed with suspected illegal immigrants crashed into a tree after being hit by a pickup truck early Monday, killing four of the van's occupants.

State Police said the accident occurred at about 5:30 a.m. on Interstate 12 near Lacombe in St. Tammany Parish.

Trooper Kevin Allen said the driver of the pickup apparently fell asleep and hit the back of the van, which was carrying 18 people. The van spun off the roadway and hit a tree broadside.

The injured were taken by helicopter and ambulance to five hospitals.

Three of those killed died at the scene. The fourth victim died at a hospital.

Allen said federal immigration agents arrested four people who had been in the van, including two juveniles. He said federal agents were checking the status of the rest of the people in the van.

The driver of the pickup truck, Glen Richard, 47, of Crowley, was booked on charges of negligent homicide, negligent injury and careless driving.
