It breaks my heart to think that this dad might blame himself for this and live with it for the rest of his life.
The latest news is that the dad didn't run in the race, the family was there to watch other runners.

Until yesterday, the Boston Marathon had always been such a joyous event. Folks cheering on runners they didn't know, celebrating their victory no matter how long it took. This was all along the route, not just at the finish.

Holy crap, the young man that lost both his legs, looking at his facial expression it appears to be he is more in shock than physical pain. Perhaps it's thanks to the guy in the cowboy hat that the young man hasn't died from blood loss.

He is in shock, the physiological one, not psychological. He would have died in minutes had they not stopped the bleeding.

If I was a runner about to finish right when the bombs went off I would have crossed the finish line first THEN turned around to help. 😀

To think that this would be a walk in the park for Afghanastan, Pakistan or Iraq (figuratively speaking). Attacks like these in those countries have like 30+ instant deaths on the regular. Imagine what those scenes would look like.

Not to sound insensitive, but I'm not sure this needed to be an article, lol. Pretty sure we knew legs weren't gonna make it. Glad that it sounds like he'll be okay though

Yeah, that sounds insensitive. 😉 I just don't associate a young person like that, attending the race to watch his girlfriend run, as being "okay" when he's coming home with no legs. Alive? Sure, but 'okay'? I imagine it couldn't be much worse of a nightmare for him.

Historically, have there been any cases of mass violence like this *without* anyone stepping forward? It seems to me that for any rational human being, something like this is intended to send a message or make a point. It is a demonstration of sorts and that person or organization will want to follow up and make sure that people understand the point that they were trying to make. So they reveal themselves that way. In fact, they would have to reveal themselves to follow up their point, if they were rational.

Have there been any cases where people have *not* revealed themselves? As in, they're not trying to make a point, they simply revel in the joy of having done it? They could care less about any other higher meaning.

Not necessarily. I was speaking with an ex Army medic who served in Afghanistan about this exact photo earlier today. He said when it comes to injuries from explosives, the heat from the explosion will often cauterize the massive wounds to appendages (arms/legs). He said it's the internal injuries and bleeding, and injuries to the head that most blast victims die from, not from blood loss from blown off arms/legs, despite how devastating it appears to look.

I could be wrong about this, but in one picture it appears a if the man in cowboy hat is pinching shut his leg vein with his fingers. In any case, cowboy guy deserves a medal, and I don't write that lightly.

It's getting the high explosives here that make it hard to construct such a device. This was nothing more than a big black powder pipe bomb.
