A Marathon normally have ALOT of police AND medical personnel ready to get into action to aid the tens of thousands of runners - thank god they were all there to take action otherwise the death toll would be much higher given the updated numbers are over 100 injured.

Also add to the fact there are other medical/police running the race themselves to aid the victims.

Lastly, Marathon runners are some of the healthiest people and many of them that did not finished or finished the race immediately went to hospitals to donate their blood for the victims.

Runners are a tight knit group - many of them after finishing a half-marathon or full marathon would join everyone else in the stands along the last legs of the race to cheer everyone else finishing.

I'm thinking a lot if lives were saved by having people able to do something quickly saved a lot of lives.

Many of the pictures I've seen plenty of folks would have bled out in 5 minutes.

Hope leg guy makes it. That was his blood all around him.

Hopefully there will be a camera that will help identify who planted the bombs, what a cruel evil thing to do, I could maybe see someone going after a person who wronged them but bombing an innocent crowd? killing an 8yr old boy?, what a fucking monster, I hope the cons rip his nuts off in prison if he get's caught..

I have a feeling whoever did this will die the first day should they end up in prison.

There's another big of the girl in the bright blue shirt being carted off on a stretcher with oxygen; I was very very relieved when i saw it; hope she's ok

Not to bust your happiness bubble but she looks even more dead in that image. They are breathing for her in that pic. She's ghostly pale and between that leg wound and concussive blast trauma(she appeared to be nearly at ground zero) she's most likely dead. Sorry.

Just wanted to let ATers know I'm OK. Doubt any of you know who I am or that I live in Boston now, but I'm OK (in NH for the weekend actually).

I never though Boston would be a target. It just shocks me, Boston isn't a major symbol of America nor really the government. This is just so freaky. I live less than a 10 minute walk from there. Two of my friends were there. One of them was missing for an hour or so, but he's OK. They were a couple hundred feet from the blast. If me and my girlfriend hadn't been in NH, we would have been there too. Scary.

It's especially scary when you watch the coverage of it, and recognize every place in the pictures. My girlfriend walks by there every day on the way to work 🙁. My favorite restaurant/bar (Whiskey's) is near there too.

You gotta think that with it happening right at the finish line, there has to be surveillance video of some sort that caught someone dropping a bag in a garbage can or something. A store's security camera, a news camera, a traffic camera... something.

One hundred people probably threw something away in that general vicinity over the course of an hour, if it was in a trash can. Not to say that it isn't impossible but there will be a lot of video and photographic evidence to go over.

[Update, 9:38 p.m. ET] Dr. Allan Panter, who was near the finish line waiting for his wife who was running the race, told CNN he was standing about 20 to 25 feet from the first blast. He said he treated victims on the street after the explosion.

"I saw at least six to seven people down next to me," he said. "They protected me from the blast. One lady expired. One gentleman lost both his (lower) limbs. Most of the injuries were lower extremities. I could not figure out why the young lady had expired. I could not find any injury on her thorax."

you might be right.. :'(

I dont know if thats the same chick, even. It might be, but in the pictures linked above it looks like her legs are like, either not attached or just barely attached and in a completely unnatural position to her side/behind her.
Looks to me like she just lost at least her entire left leg. She sure looks dead.

I couldnt really see a right leg, either. But the woman on the stretcher looks like she had two legs.

Her left leg is just placed on the stretcher I believe. Check out the other pictures of her laying on the ground and it's just a mess laying next to her. There may have been some skin that held on, though.

That is what I surmised...from the damage I could see in the two photos...she was potentially standing in front of the blast because it basically looked like both of her legs were cut in half and shredded like string cheese...and god only knows what her back looked like...cutting the Femoral artery in both legs would be instant death in my opinion.

The only hope for her if she did expire is that she was knocked out from the blast and didn't feel any pain.

As for that guy with the blown off legs, I am amazed that he was conscious in those pictures...

One thing that doesn't confuses me a bit about these bombs is if they were detonated by a cell phone...and you had two go off in ten seconds of each other that either the other two they found malfunctioned or it was some other kind of a bomb because how could they shut down the cell towers in that short of time.

I would have thought all of the bombs would have detonated at the same approximate time.

As a reminder guys, we do not allow gory images to be inlined. If you want to link them that's perfectly fine, but I shouldn't be seeing any blood as an inline image.

Sorry about that, I thought it was a poignant enough image that it should be seen.
