How far are we going to go for the illusion of safety?

Terrorists have already shown that if they want to kill people and destroy things, there's nothing we can do to stop them.

The mere fact that we have refused to just go back to daily life is evidence that the terrorists have already "won".

Actually law enforcement has already shown that it can foil terrorist attacks. The list is pretty long, even if there have been some close calls.

What *really* pisses me off about that checked luggage charge is that's pushing people to move up to those freaking "roller cases" now and stuff them as full as possible. And instead of bringing on a reasonably sized carry on, people are bringing a scaled down suitcase and cramming it on there.

And the flights are fully booked and the overhead is now jammed full of roller cases leaving no room for my modest sized backpack and the attendants are now forcing you to shove that under your seat. Which is fine if you are 4'8" and have tiny feet. I'm already cramped for space as it is. Punishing me for bringing a reasonable sized carry on while encouraging those damn roller cases is a joke.

Yeh...fuck that too.

Then go buy shampoo when you get to your desitnation, or just bring less than 3 oz.

A lot of people tend to go on longer trips where 3oz isn't enough, or they like to not pay for extra crap and just use what they already have.

The problem we ran into was playing the "weight game". When you go on vacation for a week as a family you might need more than 3oz so it's easier to just throw the bottle in checked. Which is fine but do that for other stuff like conditioner...and makeup...and shaving cream...and whatever else women need to survive on a daily basis and that stuff adds up in serious weight.

Throw it in a suitcase and seriously eats into your baggage weight. Go over 50 pounds and you pay *ANOTHER* $50 on top of the existing checked baggage fee. You'd normally take it carry on but now you can't.

Depending where you are going (say...an island resort) you might not have the option of buying locally when you get there.

Weak.

Yep. I went on a cruise this summer and you pretty much had to pack enough of whatever you needed for the week lest you pay obscene amounts of money on the ship and island for things.

I don't know why we are discussing this. This is an obvious plot put together by Fed-Ex! Everyone Knows This!

How is bringing only 3 ounces of a liquid on an airplane any less dangerous than bringing an entire bottle?

i'd guess the explosive being used wasn't explosive enough for just 3 ounces to do anything.

though, if you have several bottles can't you just combine them on the plane?

:hmm:

They've been doing dry runs for a decade. Have you been paying attention to how many bomp plots have been attempted and stopped? We're at war remember.

So you agree and have to post like in a negative way why? Oh and I did my time in service so you don’t have to let me know we are at war:\

Not meant to be negative, and thank you greatly for your service. Some people forget we are at war whether we want to be or not.

I have CNN on in the background... it's a false alarm so their new angle is that it's a "test run" -- I guess so we can still be terrified.

Yes, we're at war, and have been for a decade or more...yet we keep playing nice with the enemy and their citizens...because, gawd forbid, we don't want to be seen as racist...nor do we want to be caught profiling...

And the enemy clearly knows how to take advantage of this.

Image of device. Sure looks like a cell phone. And now fighter jets are escorting a plane from Yemen into JFK.

A spokeswoman for the Jewish Federation in Chicago said the community had been warned to be on the alert in the wake of the discoveries.

"We were notified this morning that synagogues should be on the alert," the spokeswoman, Linda Haase, told Reuters news agency. "We are taking appropriate precautions and are advising local synagogues to do likewise."

Thats a bit weird for an international alert on cargo.
