Trump's possible plan for NASA - Moon colony!

And then there's Gingrich. He's made a fortune since leaving elected office and isn't going to take a pay cut to be in the new administration, but he's got Trump's ear and is a stalwart moon guy. Recall that when he ran for president four years ago, and was riding high in the polls in advance of the Florida primary, he used his moment in the spotlight to make a stemwinder of a speech about the need to establish a permanent moon colony and explore the solar system.
He mentioned one of his earliest ideas: That when at least 13,000 people live on the moon, they could petition to have statehood.

Bye bye Earth Science (climate change study), hello space. The moon would be fantastic to colonize for many reasons (redirect energy back to earth, rare mineral/resource mining, better place to view space than earth, backup plan in case of nuclear war, jump off point to Mars for refueling, etc). Trump will also make the moon great again.

I would love to see Earth's first moon colony. Unfortunately from I've read however is that is unfeasible since there is not a protective layer like earth has to keep small meteorites from easily destroying things. This, of course, explains why the moon is so pockmarked.

So before we go heading off into space we should develop better methods of propulsion and especially ways to harness energy into protective bubbles (shields) around our ships, bases and colonies.

Shields have no basis in physical reality. Cover shelters with soil or have them underground.
More efficient propulsion is of course a need, but not a tenth of a concern as going to Mars.

A Moon Base would be cool, but if it is at the expense of Earth Sciences it would be foolish.

Agreed. BTW the first of the new GOES weather sats just launched which is very very cool. Won't be up and running for a year or so but one article likened the change from the old GOES as having a black and white 50's TV and jumping to HDTV. That's so sweet.

Being that the trip to Mars is going to take too long (about 2 yrs round trip) using existing methods of propulsion, better propulsion should be a top priority. Also, the Earth has a natural shield which starts with its magnetic core. It protects us from things such as radiation and small meteorites which are destructive and deadly. I think the solution will be to use magnetic forces to hold a protective layer of electromagnetic plasma around us at all times (i.e. shields).

Magnetic based shields. That's right, fucking magnets! How do they work? And how can they be used to protect us in space?

Actually it would be foolish not to explore space and colonize as discoveries in Earth Sciences may prove useful on places other than Earth.

I agree with that.

I agree with that.

What you would need is a huge magnetic field and a vast atmosphere. Of course there are more ways than that impossible scenario, but the problem for long term space flight is far from being solved by any practical means.

As far as propulsion, there is a supposed leaked NASA report that the EmDrive works. I wouldn't jump up and down yet, but if true it's the next best thing to FTL space travel. The concern as I understand it (and again this supposes this report exists as stated), is that NASA doesn't want a "cold fusion" fiasco. Since it seems that no one has and effing clue how this works, we rename it the "EffingDrive"

I watched the launch live (glad they got it off before the window closed). This one satellite is going to save so many lives (and so much money).

Good point. So we would have to create a bunch of biodomes, and that could also come in handy for Mars as well.

moon colony = real science, climate change = hoax.
SO glad we have these minds in washington, we're gonna be so winning.
Cmon Sheik, it'd be awesome to go into space. I'd even buy a house next to you up there. Imagine how cool biodomes with artificial oceans made in the moon's craters would be, not to mention how fast we would get a tan up there.

Remember when Dubya said "We's goin' to Mars!" & the crowd went wild? Remember how nothing happened?

Same story, different verse. It's like pump-faking a really dumb dog playing fetch. He'll go nuts trying to find the stick in the tall grass. Three card monty & the shell game work the same way.

Shee-it, Sherlock- Repubs have de-funded our commitment to the Space Station & to manned orbital flight. The only way they're sending anybody to the moon is like the old Jackie Gleason line-

Yes, but Trump isn't the usual Republican. He has an ego and this is something that would have bipartisan support and could cement his legacy as the first prez who actually kick-started space colonization.

@SP33Demon The guy can't even run a casino in vegas, and you want him to run a moonbase? Moreover, you think it'll actually exist? And be well done?

That's not exactly somebody I would have dig a hole in the ground; he'd probably drop the shovel and lech at women, soon as I turn my head.

yea, why try to make our actual oceans clean. fvck that silliness. let's go create artificial oceans.

so a bunch of science denying fucktards are going to fund science to go to the moon to create artificial habitat.
Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

I agree, this idea sounds fantastic to idiots.
