It had nothing to do with honour. He simply did not want to go down in history as being successfully impeached and removed from office. Resigning was the easier thing to do. Nixon didn't know the meaning of the word honour.

I lived that era as a young adult & detested Tricky Dick entirely. OTOH, he did get some things right & resigning was one of them. The People had abandoned him. That wasn't true with Clinton at all. His popularity spiked to over 70% as his trial in the Senate took place, indicating that the People were willing to forgive him.

Trump would never be so gracious as to resign under any circumstances, of course.

He could have done many things. Fought the impeachment. Gone down the Trump route and claimed some vast conspiracy. Undermined or otherwise compromised our government to save himself.

Nixon was not honorable, but he did the honorable thing.

The strange thing about Nixon was that he was almost a 'liberal' in policy terms, by today's standards. Of course, standards have changed a lot.

I gather there are even conspiracy theories there that claim Watergate became a public scandal because he was disliked by the right. I haven't looked into them becuase that way madness lies, and anyway, who cares at this point?

Trump seems to outdo them all in terms of character flaws, and that's a very high bar (I don't think much of Bill Clinton or JFK on that score, either).

What's nice about america is that I don't have to believe what is said on TV. not everyone thought hilary was a shoe-in. I, for one, was very skeptical, especially after watching the republicans go off the rails when Obama was elected.

edit: What I always thought was hilarious about slick willy's indiscretions was how my religious peers(I was in church full time back then) thought that hilary was a heathen because she stood by her man, yet that was exactly what the church preached even when faced with marital problems in the congregation. turns out, they just hated democrats for anything. the more things change, the more they stay the same.

A very small but vocal minority went off the rails. There was most certainly an air of inevitability to Clinton, right up to election night. That is why there are so many election night YouTube videos of pundits and experts eating a big slice of humble pie.

The President has had fake copies of magazines printed to display how great he is and you talk about Hillary being rattled at the debate. Hillary is far tougher and resilient than the President.

I was recently researching Denmark's elections and to the surprise of many the social democrats won the biggest share of electors.. and they offered more and more free stuff (healthcare, safety net, education) but took a right wing turn on eliminating burquas, limiting future immigration from overseas while saying everyone there already will stay and not be deported as they have put down roots already.

Apparently that was enough to kick the populists out of power.

There would be no #metoo movement, no AOC, no surge in Democratic Socialism had it not been for Trump. The GOP chose to rally around scum, and in response, awakened a political movement that will lead to its demise.

No, but we should recognize what causes the pendulum to swing.

Multiculturalism is great for some things, but you need to balance it with ties that bind. There are very few unifying bonds between the rural right and urban left.

Apparently that was enough to kick the populists out of power.

The GOP has been scum since Gingrich, at least.

You can't say that the wave of democratic socialism wouldn't have occurred w/o Trump. We'll spend years recovering from wrong headed Trump/GOP policy & decades recovering from their court packing strategy.

80% of the population lives in urban areas. Conservatism obviously extends into those areas or we wouldn't have the representation that we do.
