You oust trump and you still have the VP to deal with. You go from an economic fucking to a religious fucking.

I'm thinking of the 2020 election. Mind you, if Trump was by some miracle impeached or resigned in disgrace before 2020, Pence might be a kind of persona non grata. Not so much among Republican politicians and the hardcore base as... well, everyone else. Part of why Trump survives is because he built up a cult of personality; Pence is far less charismatic. Pop that balloon and he might have trouble with anyone who isn't wearing a MAGA hat.

Yeah, but what you lose on lunatic Trump base, you pick up on the never-Trump voters, evangelicals that didn't show up to vote, and traditional GOP that see Pence as a vanilla, but safe vote.

I heard it that the MAGA hats had all been laced with stupidity inducing chemicals at first, then they found out it doesn't work the people were stupid beforehand.

Well... most of them are made in China by the lowest bidder, so they probably had nasty chemicals in them to begin with.

Get ready folks.

It's going to get nasty. How much pain we are going to endure is the question.

Unlike the EPA cuts that the Trump admin are making, the economic damage done by these new tariffs should take place pretty quickly. This could seriously hurt his chances for reelection... unlike the whole Russian election rigging thing. Conservatives don't seem to give a damn about that.

And let's not forget that for most people those tax cuts turn into tax increases a few years down the line.

I would not worry about that, that was just to sell the plan and set a trap for Democrats. If Republicans are in power the cuts will be extended until they are not.

It's not that the tax cuts expire so much though, it's the stealth tax increase that I don't think Republicans will get rid of because they're hoping no one will notice. They changed the formula for tax bracket increases to use a lower estimate of inflation.

Cut taxes at the top. Cut social programs. Borrow more money. Find alternative methods to beat the cash out of the little guys. Blame obstructionist Democrats and socialist liberal agenda for growing deficits.

MAGA on.

FTFY.

I'm disappointed that there hasn't been a single person here who's convinced that starting an all out trade war with China is a good thing.

Come on, MAGA hat wearers, speak your case! :)

This CNBC story is a wee bit concerning:

https://www.cnbc.com/2018/07/19/tru...t-tariffs-on-all-505-billion-of-chinese-.html

He does realize that his base of voters (lower income people who mostly shop at places like Walmart and Family Dollar) are going to be the ones most impacted by these tariffs, right? When prices for all of the Chinese imported crap at those stores suddenly go up 20%, it makes me wonder how eager they will be to vote for him again in 2020.

(Of course, Trump will try to call all of the stories linking the tariffs to higher prices "fake news", but I doubt that everyone will buy that other than the hardcore fans who have been completely brainwashed by his Tweets)

Trumps base is *not* mainly poor. For example, voters with an income under $50,000/yr went to the Democrats 52% to 41%

MAGA on.

Tax cut 2.0 is on the table. Cheeto wants it right before the elections (imagine that).

Gas prices are up. We just passed a tax hike for the school district to pay for "safety" upgrades to our schools. That will cost me $250 a year more in taxes. Because 'MURICA! GUNS! YEAH! My healthcare premiums are going to jump because my state has one of the highest rates of medicaid use in the country but my governor hates his population and population health and doesn't understand the burden it adds to the health care system and now un-insured care will have to be spread out over the insured.

But hey. SO MUCH WINNING!

Living in the same town, I know the feeling.

Side note: Our governor really sucks!

Well, the demographics matter a lot, and we should expect older people to be making more. I see these numbers and think, "Man, a lot of jobs suck". Shee-it, I know "IT" guys just having to reimage a disk every now and then making $80K alone.

Let's see... Donnie's voters have a median age of around 57, and those figures for income are household income. Hillary still had an overall household median of ~$60K compared to ~$70K despite having almost all the blacks, most of the Hispanics, and more of the women. Balance-the-budget Kasich voters were significantly higher than Donnie at ~$90K.

It doesn't show that Trump voters are poorer than the rest of us. They're generally better off income-wise. OTOH, that newfangled 401K doesn't really offer the same kind of income security down the road that a pension probably would. Makes 'em nervous, rightfully so. Work 'til you die or settle for a helluva lot less in retirement. Being poor scares the shit out of middle earners.

Well, yeh, but at least you have your freedumb. Or something. I just know that there are some desperately poor & desperately ill informed people throughout the region who are horribly exploited by the GOP.

Over the last 12 months wages failed to keep pace with inflation, especially in the lower skill sectors. If you add massive tariffs on top of this you’re going to be seeing a very real decline in the quality of life for huge swaths of people in this country.

It will be interesting to see just how much Trump’s supporters will let him pick their pocket before they revolt.

Couple this policy with Trump's complaints about the Fed raising rates due to inflation concerns.

His complaint is that it will slow growth, but his massive tariffs will have a significant negative impact on both those fronts. Letting inflation run out of hand will help pretty much no one.

no hate for justin trudeau imposing tariffs that hurt every single canadian?

tariffs on about 90 percent of all items canadians use every day?

anything?

the trick with tariffs is to impose them on products you can make at home.

canada doens't have much of that left.

- Food products, including yogurt, roasted coffee that is not decaffeinated, prepared meals of fowl or beef.

- Sweets, including maple sugar and syrup, licorice candy, toffee, other sugar confectionery, including white chocolate, not containing cocoa, other chocolate in blocks — slabs or bar, filled or not filled.

- Other foods, including pizza and quiche, cucumbers and gherkins, jams, jellies, strawberry jam, nut purees and pastes, berry purees, and other fruit purees other than banana puree.

- Condiments, including soy sauce, tomato ketchup and other tomato sauces, prepared mustard, mayonnaise, salad dressing, mixed condiments and mixed seasonings, other sauces.

- Soups and broths, mineral waters and aerated waters, containing added sugar or other sweetening matter or flavour.

- Whiskey.

- Personal grooming products, including manicure or pedicure preparations, hair spray, shaving and after-shave preparations, soaps and other skin washing products.

- Household products, including room deodorizers, automatic dishwasher detergents, candles and tapers, other than those for birthdays, Christmas or other festive occasions; glues or adhesives sold in containers of under a kilogram, tableware and kitchenware, plastic household articles and hygienic or toilet articles, of plastic, toilet paper, handkerchiefs, cleansing or facial tissues and towels, tablecloths and serviettes, printed or illustrated postcards or greeting cards.

- Hardware products, including insecticides and fungicides in packages under 1.36 kg each, plywood (other than bamboo), veneered panels and similar laminated wood.

- Other steel or iron products, including beer kegs, or parts for stoves, ranges, grates, cookers and barbecues.

- Aluminum bars, rods, wire, sheets, foil, tubes and pipes and pipe fittings, most aluminum structural pieces, aluminum reservoirs, tanks, vats and similar containers, including tanks for compressed or liquefied gas.

- Aluminum kitchenware, including tables, scouring pads.

- Appliances, including refrigerator-freezers fitted with separate external doors, instantaneous or storage water heaters, washing machines.

- Miscellaneous items, including lawn mowers, electrical boards, panels, consoles, inflatable boats, sailboats, motorboats, mattresses, sleeping bags and other bedding, playing cards, ball point pens, felt tipped and other porous-tipped pens and markers.

i would be shocked if 10 things on that list are made in canada still.
