I don't understand how barring doing something illegal, senators have a guaranteed job for at least 6 years from when they get elected. In positions of such importance and power their job should be up quarterly evaluations. Terms should be a year max, then run for reelection. Mitch isn't worried about a single person in America liking him because his job's safe for 6 years. I know his job can't be compared to any one I've had. But most of mine they monitored my progress and I'd have regular sit down assessments. Knowing the job you're doing's being watched tends to make a person try harder. No matter what Mitch does here, he's still got a job. If American's don't get anything above $600 he doesn't have a care in the world. He's making 6 figures a year and can't be fired. That's some damn good job security.

I have had a similar thought for some time now.
Basically elected officials would have to submit to random drug screens, and pre employment drug screens, just like a majority of the American People are.

What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

I still think he mostly vetoed the defense bill because of the shell company limitations.

He def wants sec 230 to be repealed. Otherwise he'll be banned from every place that matters because he won't follow the rules. Twitter. Facebook. Instagram. He only gets different rules because of the office of President. I mean, I'd expect to be banned if I posted the shit he does, wouldn't you?

For sure but I think the shell company limitation are a much bigger issue for him. I also think he plans on starting up his own media network. If he doesn't end up behind bars he will probably be successful building his own platform.

Tacking the repeal of 230 onto this covid relief bill does not comport well with that assessment. Mitch wanted it dead & Trump only proposed it to flood the zone & hold the spotlight. It's contrived drama. Trump torpedoed his own proposal. Now they'll both blame the Dems.

Bingo
While everyone else is distracted with 230....

It includes a measure known as the Corporate Transparency Act, which undercuts shell companies and money laundering in America. The act requires the owners of any company that is not otherwise overseen by the federal government (by filing taxes, for example, or through close regulation) to file a report that identifies each person associated with the company who either owns 25% or more of it or exercises substantial control over it. That report, including name, birthdate, address, and an identifying number, goes to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). The measure also increases penalties for money laundering and streamlines cooperation between banks and foreign law enforcement authorities.

God damn it. I just found out there's no stimulus for adult dependents (17+ years old).
That's both my kids! Where's my free money!!?!?!

About time, the LLC game is ridiculous. As much fun as it would be to see who else owns pieces of Trump's 400+ LLCs, the corruption is much deeper and broader with some states making it a crime to reveal the owners of LLCs.

Yeah, that's where I was with the previous stimulus, I didn't get any money for my 17 year old, and he didn't get it either (despite him having worked and filed taxes for 2019). Kind of a weird black hole.

Interestingly in reading I learned that adults with disabilities that are listed as dependents get shafted too. Seems like these people (or their caregivers) need the money as much, if not more than, anyone.

If your son files a tax return for year 2020, he will receive a stimulus check at that time in the form of a refund. Presuming he isn't claimed as a dependent

To qualify for your own stimulus check, you needed to have filed your 2019 taxes independently, which means no one else claimed you on their taxes as a dependent. You also had to have an adjusted gross income of under $75,000 to receive the full amount of $1,200. (The sum decreases as your AGI goes up, and if you made over $99,000, you weren't eligible for a check.)
There are two different sets of rules for who counts as an adult or a dependent under current tax law, according to Janet Holtzblatt, a senior fellow at the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center.
One is the support test. If you're unmarried, you don't claim children as your own dependents, your parents provide you with financial support equal to or greater than half of your annual income and you made less than $4,200 in 2019, then your parents can still claim you as their dependent. Another is the residency test: If you're a full-time student under the age of 24 who resides with an adult taxpayer more than half of the year (unless you're living on a college campus), you can be claimed as a dependent, no matter how much money you make.

Nope, he's going to be claimed as a dependent, since he only turned 18 a couple weeks ago.

Might want to reconsider. If he is 18 (or 17 for that matter) he doesn't qualify for the $2,000 child tax credit. Looks like all you would get is a $500 credit as a non-child dependent. See:

Presuming, of course, that you aren't getting some other kind of tax benefits for him - it sounds like for 2020 it might be better for him to file himself for the $1,200 Stimulus #1 and $600 for Stimulus #2. Obviously, I'm not your CPA, but just giving my thoughts as a tax person.

Yeah, I wouldn't be able to file head of household if I didn't claim him, I'd have to file as single.

I didn't get $600, I got $611.21! A $600 deposit yesterday and a "Govt. Stimulus Chase 30 Day Overdraft Assistance" for $11.21 tonight. which I didn't get last time. I know for a lot of people every single penny here helps. $11.21's a seemingly random amount.

*EDIT* I just Googled this, apparently this is from Chase in case I had a negative balance prior to the Stimulus deposit (which I didn't) and they'll take it back in a few weeks. So it's some kind of weird loan shit I didn't even ask for, And here I was thinking the Government felt bad about shitting on us for making the $2,000 back to $600 again and gave me a little extra, silly me ha. Although $11.21 would be a stupidly disrespectful amount when they legit had us thinking we might be getting $2,000.

People in CA aren't too bright. Apparently some CAer wrote some stuff on Nan's wall or garage about the $2K. They don't seem to be bright enough to know that the House passed a clean version of it and it's Moscow Mitch who trashed the whole deal.

This is the effects of 4 years of the right (Trump mostly) blaming everything on the democrats and Pelosi, painting the picture that republican's are angels and are never to blame for the bad shit. They are blaming Pelosi because she didn't agree to the bigger package before the elections, and they are claiming she refused to pass it because she didn't want Trump to get credit, when the real truth is it wouldn't pass because of the Business liability protections that where in it. It's all about how the right spins/twists reality, or in the real world, what we would all call fiction.

If you watched some of the discourse online, only Democrats have agency, so even when Republicans are doing the bad thing, it's the fault of the Democrats for letting Republicans do bad things.
