I have also heard from members expressing dismay with the entertainer's monologue and concerns about how it reflects on our mission. Oliver Knox, who will take over this summer as our president, and I, recognize these concerns and are committed to hearing from members on your views on the format of the dinner going forward. Last night's program was meant to offer a unifying message about our common commitment to a vigorous and free press while honoring civility, great reporting and scholarship winners, not to divide people. Unfortunately, the entertainer's monologue was not in the spirit of the mission.

Every day we are working hard to advocate for our members and ensure coverage that benefits the public, and the dinner is an important opportunity to highlight and maintain our essential work. The White House Correspondents' Association remains dedicated to that mission.

she nailed the ending. the media created a monster and now they are profiting from him.
instead of glamorizing intelligence and science, the media is flooding the world with stupidity and then wonder why society is going down faster and faster.

I did like Margaret's speech before hand and imo she has nothing to apologize for other than her potential career impact. And that's not a real apology she never said the S word. But it's all good, what was said was said and there are more important things to worry about. Unfortunately that probably means they'll have some lame ass boring entertainment next year.

I personally find your outrage entertaining, given the constant stream of bull shit that comes from the white house and the administration. I'm sure SHS and Trump approve of your white knighting.
 
From a pure technical standpoint, I really don't enjoy her delivery and find her voice grating to listen to.

But there were some pretty good zingers in there. People are in an absolute uproar about the "smokey eyes" comment towards SHS. Both my wife and I found that to be one of the more benign jokes in there. She put a compliment and a jab into one joke. People are taking offense about "taking it personal on her looks" when it was actually a compliment about how well she can apply makeup while *COMPLETELY* ignoring the fact that the real jab was at the fact that SHS routinely destroys truth.

It is really telling that out of a monologue centered on how our country’s leadership is led by pathological liars and how people are still dying from unclean drinking water in Flint the thing everyone is focused on is how someone made fun of the pathological liar press secretary.

If you need spoon-feeding, sure. You did however make a point saying it isn't meant to be a roast when clearly it is.

To answer your question though:

Even if one purely sticks to the facts, Trump's presidency is in a pretty grim state. At a function such as the WHCD, a comedian can either largely ignore current events, or one can do what the press is supposed to do and shine a bright fucking light on it, warts and all, just with more zingers. Some people however prefer to think that attempting to look "balanced" is more important and to achieve that involves ignoring as much as they possibly can on one side in order to attempt to present "both sides" as if they're somehow in vaguely equivalent states. What the association president has said falls into the latter group IMO.

The sad reality is reflected in the show and the faces of the 'Fox & Friends' presenters when talking to Trump on their show recently, it was the perfect microcosm of current events in America. It would be comedy gold if it wasn't for the fact that this is how the freaking President of the United States is acting in public. If you don't honestly expect a comedian at the WHCD load up with ammo like that, and take aim and fire with all the skill they can muster, then your head is either so utterly buried in the sand regarding current events and/or you didn't take a moment to think about what comedians typically do when covering political topics.
