Took too long
If they would carry out executions in a reasonable amount of time after found guilty this ground swell of anti-Death Penalty supporters would not have a chance to gain traction.
The court process is especially slow. The Supreme Court would never allow a law that expedited executions because any such thing would violate due process. Shit happens and wrongful convictions are all to common, and take on average of 15 years to "correct". Hell Timothy Cole died in prison 14 years after he was wrongfully convicted. He wasn't exonerated until 2009/2010, even though there were doubts of his guilt from the get go.
