Looks like GPU Phyics is finally running on the AMD GPU.
But im assuming that it will also run on NV as well.

Maybe it uses OpenCL for physics or Direct Compute.

I really do hope AMD shows the way for non proprietary physics standards.

As long as it is used to improve gameplay that is and not just render some silly smokes and papers flying around.

Yeah it's a shame we just can't turn off those effects. I like straight up console ports and prefer 90fps as opposed to 60fps with more worthless effects.

TFSM thanks PhysX won't become a standard or widespread within the next 8 years.

This is probably the "Top Secret DX11 Effect" being used in Tomb Raider. Realistic hair. :p

Should be interesting to see. Best-looking hair I've ever seen is in Alice: Madness Returns, I think they used PhysX in that one.

Well looking at clothing and hair on characters in even the most graphic inspiring games it's pretty obvious how ridiculous characters actually look and why we need physics to make characters look lifelike.

I'd rather have hair and clothing correctly animated than any sort of improved breaking glass and smoke effects at this point in time. A standard would also be nice so everyone can see it and use it.

If this is proprietary, then every person who hates physx for being "worthless" and "proprietary" better be saying the same thing about this. At the same time, every person who thinks physx is good better be saying this is good too.

I for one think it would be a good move by AMD to make this a proprietary feature. They seemingly have a large amount of momentum with bundles, good prices, and the next-gen consoles - it'd be a good business move to continue building off that momentum.

Havok is a proprietary middleware but if they use OpenCL for GPU Physics would be welcomed.

Nice to potentially see more players and competition with GPU Physics.

Havok isn't proprietary, it's owned by Intel and doesn't use GPU's for any functionality. It runs on AMD and Intel CPU's, and it runs the same regardless of whether an Nvidia or AMD GPU is present.

Of course Havok is proprietary because "it is" owned by Intel.

So will GPU Havok end up on the PC? Or is this a one-off for the PS4?? It would be interesting if Intel allowed their middleware to work on something other than their CPUs.

That is why Havok using GPU Physics and showcasing GPU Physics is welcomed now! What API are they using for the GPU processing? OpenCL?

Nearly 4 years ago:

Do you really think that Intel will push GPGPU? Why would they? They are selling CPUs. They have no interest in pushing GPUs.

Because the hardware in the new consoles makes an open standard for physics calculations very attractive to developers with what is possible on GCN. Intel/Havok is also very attracted to console money.

Unless you think they are allowing developers to use Havok for free?

Imho,

nVidia's PhysX and Intel's Havok are proprietary middleware owned by nVidia and Intel respectively. The proprietary aspect that is discussed or nit-picked is not really the middleware but the proprietary API Cuda that the PhysX' GPU component uses.

Heck, I think AMD respects the PhysX middleware but doesn't like the proprietary API Cuda.
