In short, you don't need a passport unless you plan on leaving the country. Everything that you need to do within the states you can do with a driver's license / State ID, and maybe a SS card / Birth Certificate if you stretch it.
Losing your SS Card or Birth Certificate is not a real argument for having a passport. You should have those things stashed away safely, so that you know exactly where they are.
Don't get me wrong, I have travelled out of the country many times, and I am an "adult" by your definition... but having a passport is not a necessity in this country. My passport expired ~5 years ago, and I currently have no need to renew it. I really don't see how you can be so thick headed about this...
