NWTF? I can't believe some people are arguing that the company shouldn't pay for the passport. They are the ones sending him out of the country so they should pay. It's that simple.

If somebody came to me as an employee and demanded the company pay for the passport I would seriously consider whether I wanted them to work for me any longer. So I can't believe people expect the employer to pay.

please acept that, as evidenced by this thread, that MOST people disagree with you and let it drop.

get the passport (even if you have to pay for it) and you may get some more chances to travel for work :)

I wouldn't expedite it if it's 3 months away. But the Beginning of November is only 9 weeks away so you might need to.

If you don't want to, just tell the company that you can't afford it right now and they'll have to pay for it or send someone else. Unless you really want to go on this trip, then you'll have to come up with a way to make it work.

Just had a chance to read this. Why do you need to expedite? We ordered ours about 4 weeks ago with regular service and got them yesterday.

I've never had an employer pay for my drivers license, car registration, or any other transportation fees incurred in getting to work, so yes, I think it's well within the bounds of normalcy for them to require you to pay for the passport if your job requires it. If you can't afford it, you should ask for a raise or find a better paying job.

Your employer does not pay your expenses when they ask you to go on a business trip?
I would look for another job. ;)

Seriously though, if they didn't make having a passport a requirement before you got the job , they should be paying.

Ah HA, I win. :) I got an email today saying that the customer will be paying for the passport and visa. Seems odd that the company wouldn't pick up the bill, but all that matters to me is that I'm not!

Unlees you agreed to get a passport on your own dime when you accepted the job they should pay for the poassport.

When I started my Job I was told I would need one and the payment was negotiated BEFORE I accepted.'

What I do not get is pewople that accept jobs and then try and negotiate.

What's your definition of adulthood, then? I'd love to hear it.

I figured I would get called on that. ;)

"able to care for yourself and others without outside influence, and not expecting others to take care of your needs"

-edit-
in reference to the OP and benny - adulthood means doing what you need to do. Not having a passport at age 30 and fighting it are the reactions of a child.

Wow, quit being an ass. It is not a necessity unless you leave the country. I can count the number of times having a passport saved me any inconvenience on zero hands. If keeping track of your birth certificate and social security card are a big deal to you, maybe you're the one who is not ready for adulthood?

OP, look at it this way - they're going to be paying for all of your food while you're over there, right? So you'll save a ton of money that way. Let the passport slide.

There's a passport service center in DC why not go there and get it in one day? You can usually only go to the service center if you are travelling within 14 days unless you need a visa. If you are a civilian DoD employee they have a special center for you and other federal employees.

When I had to get my passport I was leaving the country in 5 days. I had to drive to Chicago but I got it within 5 hours.

Hmm, I remember a coworker of mine getting his there a while ago, but he's not in today. Is this more expensive than it would be to get it expedited elsewhere? I'm not traveling until November, but I do have to get my visa. I'm a contractor, not a govt employee, however.

I would assume that you use your DL and car to go other places than just work... :disgust:

The point is, the OP would not need, or probably ever get a passport for his own personal use, so it is reasonable that the company (or someone else) should pay for it.

I bet most of you who think a passport is essential would be shocked at how many people have never been on a plane in their life... let alone having taken one to another country.

How do you not have a passport? Literally I've had a passport since before I can remember (went to Poland to visit family as a baby). How do you get to adulthood without leaving the country... ever?

I don't mean that question in the rude way it seems; it's just such a (forgive the pun) foreign concept to me - like being Amish and not ever having electricity installed in your house. So, in advance, I apologize if the question sounds offensive on-face; I just wonder.

Ive never been able to afford it. Thats why. You should consider your self blessed instead making fun of others.
