Not only do you not know them, but there's 17 of them. You can't even tell WTH they are making etc. The "recap" of all their dishes takes 20 mins out of the show.
It starts to get REALLY good at about 10. Then you know people, you know what they can and can't do, and each one of their dishes is explained/showcased a bit more.

Especially for Top Chef DC, where we've had some notable closures due to the economy in the past year. Hell, El Bulli is closing - Ferran Adria says the place never made a dime.

Guys like Jose Andres or Michel Richard. Those are legit DC chefs with broad success and a great attitude. Look at Minibar. That place breaks even on a good night, but Andres says its "his gift" to our city.

Agreed about humility. Some chefs can't seem to pull it off without coming of as patronizing or artificial though. Look at the Chefs from Top Chef: Masters. They are already names in the industry and practically every one of them is a cocky sob. Some coat it with humility better than others, but there's still that arrogant undercurrent common to them all.

It may be that the directors of TC encourage the cockiness too. They need that person that you love to hate in order to sell the show to some of their audience. Personally, I'd rather they focus solely on the cooking (and Padma's rack) because I don't give a crap about the personalities.

It's a shame about El Bulli. It's always been a goal of mine to visit that place if I can manage to get my ass over to Spain. I guess Adria is thinking about converting it to an academy in the future.

Hasn't Andres talked about expanding the capacity at Minibar? 6 people per seating seems a bit restricted.
 
Man, Padme hasn't lost the baby weight yet...

Last night's episode was harsh - 2 cooks gone and one of them won the previous challenge.

They shouldn't have cut the gaysian character, big mistake for the Bravo audience. There are way, way less talented chefs left standing. The double elimination thing is a really bad gimmick for the show.
 
Top Chef is on Hulu this season. :thumbsup:

Gotta catch them while they are fresh tho, they aren't up long.

Yeah, it's a shame. They should have just sent Lynne home instead of the Asian guy too. It seems the reason they got booted was because of the undercooked pasta. He was the one who told her to go boil the pasta sooner, but she just refused to do it.

yeah she really is a dumb c*nt, I would probably quit cooking school if she was the teacher. This season has absolutely no likeable characters at all... like I don't give a shit about any of them.

The producers are trying to make him more likeable so they wouldn't eliminate him just yet. From day one they wanted him to be up against the other arrogant prick, except now they're trying to develop a storyline so you care about him.

I like Top Chef, just wish it was on a different channel.

I am so tired of the insipid commercials for all Bravo's gay shows.
 
the little vietnamese gay guy was a bit annoying but seemed talented.

it fucks up the season when they let the shitty cooks past the first few episodes. should not have done the double elimination thing.

and my favorite right now is this amanda chick. she's like a less-skanky leah. and that other girl that was with the uglier girl is pretty hawt too.
 
Just watched episode 4. Darn, that was a brutal challenge to be on the short end of the stick.

Most of the other challenges, all you have to do is avoid being the worst. However if you weren't one of the best at breakfast or lunch, even if you weren't the worst, you have a 33% chance of going home.

With other typical challenges, someone like Kenny could have a bad day but not go home because they'd certainly give him another chance...not as easy when there are only 2 other teams up for final elimination.

On top of that, you're at the mercy of your teammate's performance, which sort of makes it bogus in a challenge format like this imo.

It definitely sucks that the 'gaysian' [lol] dude got booted, he was one of the more talented and original chefs and on any other day, he would have gotten another chance.

I hope they never do that challenge format again...they freakin had 2 of the season's best chefs up for elimination and almost lost possibly the best very early in the season (Kenny.)

i thought those two plus the, uh, gaysian, would end up in the top 6-8, at least. the team aspect basically pitted the weakest person in each pair against each other, with the other three as random fodder for elimination.

I have watched a few seasons of the show, 2 & 3 & 6, and I like it but the problem is the average person has no clue on half of the stuff they talk about when cooking or the method they use that is the issue many have since they are so top quality chefs.

On that note I am going to have to catch up soon on this since not much else on tv these days.
 
Anyone noticed that they have started putting ad breaks in really obnoxious places, a la Hell's Kitchen? "And the winner is...." [ad break] epic anti-climax and major annoyance.

Kenny is obviously one of the best and it would have been a complete fustercluck if he got booted, but I thought the asian guy could advance pretty far. He's got a flair to his cooking and he seems like he has a lot of promise. I really wish he could have stuck around longer to find out.
 
While I still love the show, this season pales in comparison to last seasons with the Uber-Chefs (and characters) they had on.

I agree, so far it seems like the talent last season is far greater than the current seasons.

Beardly could whip all their asses up and down.
 
there were, like, four good chefs last season, who were apparent from the start and ended up being the final four.

at least they made it interesting this season. there are really only two favorites so far, so maybe some of the eliminations will actually be, like, surprising.
