And, we should also vacate any wins by any teams that have beat them during that team, because obviously, you can't beat a cheater unless you're cheating more!

I had to go check the record to see if your method would get the Packers into the Super Bowl. :( Nope. Therefore, a dumb idea. :p

I would say the bottom line in deflate gate are these three things:
(1) journalists (and we see this in other areas of life too) love to exaggerate everything for personal attention.
(2) regular people just flat out do not like people lying to them (just say you deflated your balls, and we'll move on, stop standing there lying to us).
(3) ball jokes are and will always be funny.

100ppp, and I had to read through page 4 (that's 100 posts for you folks counting at home) in order to make sure this wasn't already posted. So I had to wade through the monkey's throwing poo at each other, which is why I should have gone with my first impulse, which was, "Re-post? I don't care."

Anyway, I have no strong opinion, no skin in this game, but I found this article quite interesting:

The New England Patriots Prevention of Fumbles is Nearly Impossible.

Ban Bot, our resident stat hound, posted this very same suggestion earlier with some back of the envelope numbers and no link, looking at patriots fumbles from year to year, starting 2012 to 2014, and how unusually sharp the drop was this year. No other team managed that, it seems, and it seems like it might be an anomalous drop off for any team ever.

....very interesting. :hmm:

For starters Brady throws the ball where his receiver can catch and control the ball before he takes a hit, it's called accuracy. Secondly the Patriots move the ball using a LOT of short passes and Brady gets it out as fast as anyone, that eliminates the possibility of strip-sacks and when he does see a defender bearing down on him he's quick to get to the ground. Also BB is notorious for benching players who fumble, just ask Steven Ridley who was benched for multiple games in a row for fumbling. I find it hard to believe that the under-inflated ball issue could slip past so many teams, Refs, players for 7 years without anyone noticing it, makes zero sense to me.

Nice stats. LoL, Patriots are huge cheaters.

And your a huge moron for believing any crap a sports magazine can come up with. Gee, maybe they have coaches that train the players to hang on to the ball, or is your 6-cell brain not capable of such a deep thought?.

It's irrelevant what stat the Patriots lead in, it has to be involved with cheating of some type, right?. Go ahead and jump right on the hate-wagon the real NE fans really don't give zero fucks.

I'm just getting a kick out of you being so upset.

Band-wagon haters, like band-wagon fans, tend to upset me. People like Troy Aikmen, preach all high and mighty about how Brady should be forced out of the SB REALLY piss me off, if it's found the Pat's broke the rule, (most likely did), fine them and take away a draft pick and be done with it. Somewhere it got lost that Indy was demolished 45-7 and the Patriots could have used beach-balls and still won that game.

settle down, Francis.

a few posts above, where you clearly didnt' read the article, you make arguments about Brady throwing the ball and receivers catching them.

The article actually talks about fumbles, and specifically the RBs and their precipitous drop in a single season. Despite Belichick's notorious practice of benching his RB's immediately, season after season after season, this only seemed to produce startling numbers this season.

You argue that this is just the result of his method...so tell me: Why didn't his method do anything for the last decade and then, suddenly, with the same dudes on the ball, they suddenly forget how to fumble in one season?

numbers are weird that way.

Look, I think most of this is stupid, but try not to sound crazy about it.

Again, I have no skin in this game, but all that you just wrote doesn't even begin to account for this, from the article:

One can CLEARLY SEE the Patriots, visually, are off the chart. There is no other team even close to being near to their rate of 187 offensive plays (passes+rushes+sacks) per fumble. The league average is 105 plays/fumble. Most teams are within 21 plays of that number.

I spoke with a data scientist who I know from work on the NFLproject.com website, and sent him the data. He said:

Based on the assumption that fumbles per play follow a normal distribution, you’d expect to see, according to random fluctuation, the results that the Patriots have gotten over this period, once in 16,233.77 instances”.

Which in layman’s terms means that this result only being a coincidence, is like winning a raffle where you have a 0.0000616 probability to win. Which in other words, it’s very unlikely that it’s a coincidence.

Now, from what others have pointed out here, it seems like tailoring your balls to your QB is a common, nearly league-wide occurrence. And, has been also pointed out, whatever happened in last week's game had zero effect on the outcome.

Still, you know and I know that now that the NFL is "shocked, shocked I say" to discover that balls have probably been tampered with, the Patriots will be sanctioned. A fine, the loss of a high draft pick, an alteration in pre-game ball custody, and maybe then we can all get on with our lives.

Btw, this gets my vote for best link in this entire thread:

We are indeed, at so many times and in so many respects, a nation of infantilized yahoos! :p

:D A former Colt coach. He's always been a NE hater. Yet, he had no problem with his GM raising the temp in the dome or pumping in artificial crowd noise to give his team an advantage. Cheater himself.

He explains very clearly what he believed the Patriots were doing illegally while substituting eligible and ineligible receivers on offense.

http://static.nfl.com/static/content/public/image/rulebook/pdfs/26_2012_Official_CaseBook.pdf
A.R. 7.26 POSITION CHANGE—ILLEGAL SUBSTITUTION
Third-and-2 on A30. A3, wearing the number of an ineligible receiver, reports as an eligible player and lines up at tight end. A3 catches a pass to the A35. On the next down, A3 reports to the Referee and returns to his original ineligible position at tackle. A1 runs for a touchdown.
Ruling: A’s ball, first-and-15 on A30. A3 must go out for one play. When A3 reports the second time, the Referee should advise A3 his action is illegal. (5-3-2-i)

It's not a matter of a "NE hater" or not, it's a matter of playing by the rules everyone has to play by. I guarantee you the NFL will make several things the Patriots are doing explicitly illegal before next season begins.

Funny how this trend started around 2006, when Manning/Brady helped petitioned the league to allow them to have more control over selecting/preparing their balls beforehand. This team is fucking disgraceful.

Virtually ALL the NFL QB's were in favor of letting each team prepare their own balls for each game so the rule change cannot be lumped on Brady/Manning alone. In hindsight it was and is a really bad idea, in no other major sport is this practice allowed, it's just too tempting for a team to alter balls after the inspection process to keep this method intact, there are to many examples (Brad Johnson being one, in addition to the current debacle) of teams taking advantage of it. I cannot, as a life-long Pat's fan defend my teams illegal doctoring of the balls used in the AFC championship game, I can't see where any other reason for the under-inflation but an intentional act by someone on the Pat's staff. Perhaps it's time for Kraft to do the unthinkable and fire BB, I feel badly for the players as they have worked their ass off to get to the SB only to have it enshrouded in a another scandal that only furthers the hatred of the franchise. BB must be the most paranoid or arrogant coach of all time and it's a shame because he probably is among the best at figuring out ways to win, he has a great QB and a lot of talent to work with, why on God's green earth would you risk further damage to an already shady reputation by allowing ANY act that could be considered unfair or cheating?, beyond dumb IMO, all of the NFL fans here in OT should be talking about SB match-up's and different strategies, but because of one man's arrogance we have a 17 page long thread about ball deflation, ouch.

I can see it now. If Patriots win SB, headlines will be "Cheaters win SB". Lol
