No, each team uses balls they supply and they're swapped when possession changes. Nobody has ever been able to explain why in a way which makes sense.

Brady and Manning lobbied for the rule change in 2006. Prior to that, the home team provided all the balls.

Yep, and each teams 12 balls for offense are checked for PSI about 1 hour and 45 minutes before game time and that is it. Pretty sure that is plenty of time for ball deflating shenanigans.

Blount alone rushed for enough TD's to beat Indy that day, not saying they were jobbed that day, just tired of NE's need for doing these kind of things. You would think Belicheck and Brady wouldn't need those kind of unbalanced competitive advantages.
Sounds like people talking about A-Rod

ESPN is also reporting that the Colts raised concerns to the NFL after their 42-20 loss in November to the Patriots about under-inflated footballs. There were reportedly concerns about the footballs after Colts safety Mike Adams gave the team’s equipment manager balls to save following his two-interception game against Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.

Hmmm...

You'd think they would have been looking for this, having already reported it to the NFL in the previous game with NE.

Don't care.
I'm sure all teams know about that "edge".
All teams could take advantage of it if they wanted (and probably do).

Baseball pitchers and tennis players fondle the balls to get a better outcome.

If you're not cheating you're not trying? o_O

who then told the officials

Shows just how broken the NFL is. Instead of a player being able to say "hey ref, this ball isn't right". You have to jump through 15 hoops and wait a week for a finding. The reality is the ball should have been immediately tested and if it was out of compliance, the game should have been stopped and all balls checked. That would take less time than an instant replay. At that time the refs could have take appropriate action. Which IMHO, should have been the Patriots forfeiting the game.

Now that so much time is going to pass, nothing will really happen. Maybe some draft picks but the Pats will still go to the Superbowl even though they got caught cheating. Again.

From the grantland link it seems like the ball was tested during the game:
Bob Kravitz @bkravitz
I'm told at one point the officials took a ball out of play and weighed it. Should hear more tomorrow on this subject.

The NFL probably doesn't have rules in place for a ball that was tampered with so the game continued play. That may change now.

Why not just do what baseball does and have the home team provide balls for everyone?

Why is the NFL run by morons? (this isn't to say that baseball isn't also run by morons, but at least their rules for ball handling make sense)

"Oh, yeah, we looked into that but found no cause for concern."

Maybe this has already been answered but I'm not going through nine pages of posts. If under-inflating the ball made it easier to grip, wouldn't it give the opposing team the same advantage?

Only if they managed to intercept the ball. Each team provides its own footballs for use by their offense.

Its not possible to talk about this out loud without giggling.

Today 4 grown men blushed and giggled like school girls while trying to have a serious conversation about this.

Balls.

I'd say it was a dumb idea if BB is indeed found to be responsible but I don't think it had any impact on the game itself, if these balls were that badly under-inflated how did the Ref's go for an entire half without noticing it?. Also pretty sad for Indy when a local reporter is given "leaked" information to report about the investigation. Here's a better story, your team is vastly overrated and your a bunch of sore losers who had to watch a 45-7 debacle unfold in a championship game, come back next year with a real team.

I guess that's all you have left to do after the Broncos got hosed AT DENVER by a mediocre at best Colts team, Manning's done for, the team will no longer contend and Brady and the Patriots will chug right along for at least another 3 years, sour grapes must taste pretty bad after a 43-8 SB epic beat-down and then watching the Lowly Colts send you packing in the playoff's, home-field advantage and it was a one and done deal LOL. Hey, go see if Cutler or Tebow is available so we can watch a 4-12 season, that would so epic..

Stop bringing logic and rationale into this.

any competitive advantage no matter how incremental is cheating. Its like PEDs. Even if the drug in question has minimal effects like recovery only or white blood production its considered cheating.

Just because its a small gain doesnt mean its not cheating.

This is also the second or third strike.

This is gonna fall on brady I think. Brady HAD to know. No coach would do that to a player without them having an expectation. Now a ball boy would do anything his highness mrs gisselle would say.

Except the 12 balls in question were removed at half-time and back-up balls were used. NE outscored Indy 28-0 in the 2nd half.

Who provided, and was in charge of, the back-up balls? :D

Besides, the point is cheating. It's not really about who won the game. It's about integrity.
