I'd say it was a dumb idea if BB is indeed found to be responsible but I don't think it had any impact on the game itself, if these balls were that badly under-inflated how did the Ref's go for an entire half without noticing it?. Also pretty sad for Indy when a local reporter is given "leaked" information to report about the investigation. Here's a better story, your team is vastly overrated and your a bunch of sore losers who had to watch a 45-7 debacle unfold in a championship game, come back next year with a real team.
I am not a big fan of CNN but I thought this was well done. I hope this isn't a repost ...

i dont think anyone want them out of the sb, this is probably one of the best sb matchups of recent years. even though the seahawks are prolly the best team evar, the pats have the best chance of not making fools of themselves like denver did last year. im not gay r nuttin but brady is awesome
Just came into this thread to say that I can barely fathom what the rationale is for having the individual teams supply their own balls for offense, given that they are supposed to be identical. Baseball players have their own bats, and hockey players have their own sticks because that is personal equipment and there is legal variation.
I cannot think of any other situation where equipment that is supposed to be standard is self-supplied by the teams.
Brady and Manning lobbied for this change in 2006. Before that it was the home team that supplied all the equipment. So for half their games, the visiting QB had to play with the other guy's balls. To people like you and I it probably doesn't seem like a big deal, but these guys have to handle these balls for a living and millions of dollars rest on each performance. Imagine you like your balls to feel rough but you go into the Meadowlands and have to play with Eli's balls which have been worn down over several months in preparation. Or in the case of Mr Brady who likes them a little soft it seems and he goes into Lambaugh Field where it's also well known that Aaron's balls are pumped up bigger than normal. It's already bad enough you have to worry about the hostile crowd around you but now you can't even get a good feel on the balls? It has to have caused some mishandling in the past and so they lobbied for the ability to bring their own balls wherever they play.
lets forget the whole thing and have custom balls for each QB on each team. If Dave Kreig has small hands let him have a slightly smaller ball than say Warren Moon. Flutie would have been amazing with small balls.
I think many prospects with small hands could really play better with little balls.
the visiting QB had to play with the other guy's balls.
Or better yet, have the NFL provide the balls for every game. BRAND NEW balls, not roughed up, not under or over-inflated...handled and controlled ONLY by NFL officials.

Uh, bullshit.
We don't know what happened yet, but I suspect the Patriots did deflate the balls. I also suspect that even if they did, the NFL will sweep it under the carpet. Don't like being accused of cheating? Here's an easy way to avoid it -- how about NOT cheating? You guys who are saying things like "Uh, well, it didn't really affect the outcome so we should just ignore it" are completely and totally missing the point. Not surprising for Patriots fans, but I'll spell it out again: Outcome doesn't matter, intention does.
The fact that there are people in this thread saying "Oh, it didn't impact the outcome, so let's drop it" is a really, REALLY sad statement about the mentality here. I don't care if the Colts lost 70-0, if I heard they were pulling shenanigans like this, I'd want them punished. Patriots fans desperate for a SB win, however, apparently are willing to look past anything. You have a coach with a documented history of cheating and questionable behavior but as long as he keeps winning, you guys look beyond it. I really hope I don't hear any Patriots fans bashing Carroll over the next several days for his cheating in college, because he has nothing on Bill.
Good luck to you Patriots fans in the Super Bowl -- the shitstorm you're going to experience if they lose will probably cause half of you to jump off a building.
Given that as the story develops it is very likely this is not an isolated incident and balls like this were used in games before the Colts-Pats game. Evidently the Ravens alerted the Colts prior to the game regarding suspicions of deflated footballs and further the league was evidently aware of all this and planned to inspect the balls at half time even before the interception that raised the initial report from the Colts equipment guy.

This whole story has been blown waaay out of proportion. It is common for QBs to work footballs to their liking. Everyone does it, and has done it for years! I heard Scott Zolak talk on the radio today that some QBs would even go to the extent of completely deflating a ball and running it through a "ringer" to adjust it to his liking. The QB's in the league are now all PISSED off at the Colt's for whistle blowing a common practice. It is reported that Manning is more pissed off than anyone. Now QB's will all have to use the same "out-of-the-box" balls, and it is going to suck for them. Good job Colts! Good job!
Deflating footballs, dipping hockey pucks in water, scuffing a baseball....these are all common practices, and widely accepted in the in their respective leagues. Until some idiot team or player that can't compete, complains about it, and ruins it for everyone. Ridiculous.
Yeah, I can't even believe this is still being discussed. Who gives a shit.
Wish we did not have to wait for another 10 days for the actual game.
