I gotta ask..OP, are you Asian?

If you are , congrats, you just reenforce the stereotype.

If you are not, then you, techboy, and a bunch other atot drivers need to learn how to drive <properly> again.

Dude, that's his fault. He shouldn't have been riding against traffic.

Probably why he didn't file a police report.

i agree 100%. but as a driver you need to make sure the way is clear even from idiotic bike riders.

Though the OP should not get in trouble over it. the bike rider should have to pay for the damage.

but teh OP calling it in is great. wish more people were like that..just wish he looked better before pulling out

I can't determine without clarification, the biker could have been going with traffic on the right of the car, and caught up to pass the car trying to make a right turn.

I've had cars do that to me, pull up along side and basicly cut me off making a right turn.

And that sucks because in some cases there's absolutely nothing you can do to stop in time or get out of the way, which is why the car isn't supposed to turn right until it's clear.

I was passing through Starbucks, coffee run for work, making a right into an intersection, looked right, then looked left and waited for an opening in traffic. Eased out and I hit a guy on a freaking bicycle.

Even worse, I didn't even know it. Music was fucking blaring, didn't hear anything, all I saw was a guy yelling at me in my rear view mirror when I made it into the intersection, holding his bike in the air. Initially, I thought the guy was just a random irate nutcase, then I realized that I could have possibly hit him. Turned around that instant (next light), got back to the intersection, and the guy was gone. I got out, and there were two vertical creases in my front fender and some significant tires scuffs :/

I didn't know what to do - no witnesses. I phoned the police, a female cop came out and I explained everything to her, admitted total fault - told her that I didn't check to the right of my car , and my music was blaring. She downplayed it, saying that the guy was probably fine because he rode off, but that has still yet to be determined.

She wrote out a report, but there have been no reports of any hit and runs for the past three hours and nobody has showed up at the local hospitals, so I don't really know the outcome of the situation. Poor guy, victim of my gross negligence :(

You did the right thing....and the guy is an idiot. I ride all the time....and it is just as important for a rider to go BEHIND a car than it is for the driver to look right as well. If he does try anything to you...give me a shout or send me his info. I will SLAP one silly on him!

was the guy on the bike on a sidewalk?

when i'm on a bike on a sidewalk i don't try to pass in front of car pulling out of a parking lot unless i am dead certain they've seen me. i either wait or pass behind them in the lot.

I hit/was hit by a biker years back.

I was on a smaller, side road, about a 30mph speed limit. As I was approaching her, she was on a sidewalk right next to the road. Right when I got next to her, she pops into the road and we collide - I'd slowed down to probably 20 because she was a little erratic on the sidewalk, but she hits me right at the front of the truck, just at the turn signal, she sort of bounces off/away, gets whacked by the mirror, goes back onto the sidewalk and wipes out.

I stopped to help her, she's a teen with some sort of developmental issue and is ok outside of a couple scrapes. She hops back on her bike and rides off. I drive away, later calling the cops (this is the in days when only the rich had cell phones, and they came in big bags) and explaining the thing.

I've been extra careful around bikers ever since - even though rationally it was her fault and she was ok, it's still a terrible feeling to hit someone with your car.

Bike riders are frickin assholes. Obviously, a few exceptions, I know a great guy, he rides bikes, but these morons think they own the road, it's really aggravating.

Good for you for reporting it.

When I was younger a friend and I were sprinting down the sidewalk in a race to Mcdonald's after taking our soccer ref exams. This was full sprint and we passed a t intersection, he went in front of the car no problem, I was right behind and for whatever reason the driver just decided to go. he hit me and I slid across his hood and kept on running. I always wonder what that guy must have been thinking when that occurred, because that's certainly not an every day event.

So much for this thread remaining civil...

Let the bashing of cyclists begin.

Oh, one more thing: Cyclists have as much right to ride on the road as you have to drive on it. Learn the law and show a little patience, the 5 seconds you are inconvenienced might just save someone's life. :|

I just re-read the OP and I honestly can't tell which direction the cyclist was coming from actually. Can we get a clarification on that? Was he coming from your right or from your left?

I'm still confused. Even IF the bike was riding with traffic, bikes aren't allowed to just pass cars on the right because they want to. They are subject to the same laws as cars, they just get away with cruising between traffic, running red lights, etc. Of course if there was a bike lane on the right, that's a different story, but if it was just a standard road, the biker was completely at fault if he decided to pass a car on the right like that.

It's not really clear what happened from the OP though. Did he hit a guy on the road he was turning onto? Coming from the road he was on? Dunno.

I kinda doubt the OP could miss a cyclist hitting his Left fender since that would have been the direction he was watching for traffic from to make the Right turn.

yea confused me also,

the way i read it is that the biker and the OP were travleing in the same direction, OP goes to make right turn and biker goes to go around/pass in front of him and not behind

you should always be looking in the direction you are driving. If you are finding you have to look back you are pulling out too soon.
