Today sucks :(

I was passing through Starbucks, coffee run for work, making a right into an intersection, looked right, then looked left and waited for an opening in traffic. Eased out and I hit a guy on a freaking bicycle.

Even worse, I didn't even know it. Music was fucking blaring, didn't hear anything, all I saw was a guy yelling at me in my rear view mirror when I made it into the intersection, holding his bike in the air. Initially, I thought the guy was just a random irate nutcase, then I realized that I could have possibly hit him. Turned around that instant (next light), got back to the intersection, and the guy was gone. I got out, and there were two vertical creases in my front fender and some significant tires scuffs :/

I didn't know what to do - no witnesses. I phoned the police, a female cop came out and I explained everything to her, admitted total fault - told her that I didn't check to the right of my car , and my music was blaring. She downplayed it, saying that the guy was probably fine because he rode off, but that has still yet to be determined.

She wrote out a report, but there have been no reports of any hit and runs for the past three hours and nobody has showed up at the local hospitals, so I don't really know the outcome of the situation. Poor guy, victim of my gross negligence 🙁

At least you are taking responsibility for your action. Many people would have advised you to keep going. I for one admire your honesty.

well at least be glad that it seems no one was seriously hurt, and that you did the right thing in going back when you realized what happened

i got hit on my bike in the same way you did, someone looked right then left and failed to look right again, i was also partiallt at fault for just zooming in front of him

You saved yourself a hit and run charge in case the guy calls the cops later and has your make/model/plate. I go through police reports as part of my job and it's rare to see people do the right thing in these situations.

score one for us non-bikers!!

good idea on calling the cops though, it could have turned bad if he reported a hit and run.

That sucks, but it's good that you reported it and accepted responsibility. I wouldn't worry about it in general though, hopefully your weekend will be a little better than this morning.

Why? He admitted that he was at fault to the cops. I'm just waiting for this thread to turn into the usual "Bicyclist should not be aloud on roads" flame thread. /crosses fingers.

Sadly though in such a litigious society you can seriously fuck yourself by doing the right thing these days.

In the hit and run cases you save yourself a lot too by fessing up. If the guy grabbed his plate and called it in he'd be in even deeper shit.

Nice job for the OP for manning up and taking responsibility.

ATOT likes to crucify people for any and all reasons, regardless of admitting right or wrong.

You were making a right and the cyclist was coming from your right?

Dude, that's his fault. He shouldn't have been riding against traffic.

Probably why he didn't file a police report.
