This thread is only for those that disliked Seinfeld's brand of comedy. What do consider good comedy?

I don't care if it's a stand-up comedian, a TV show, or a movie. I am trying to understand the mindset of something I find unfathomable.

I never liked Seinfeld growing up, but I just recently saw an episode and found it very funny. (I am 16 now)

First two seasons of Arrested Development. The Office (both versions, but particularly U.S. season 2).

I also used to watch The Simpsons. House was funny when it first started, but it's too repetitive and they totally lost me when they brought in that guy from Boston Public. Firefly was entertaining in a "guilty pleasure" sort of way, but by no means comparable to AD or Office.

I didn't *hate* Seinfeld and have seen quite a few episodes over many seasons, but I don't have a favorite episode, a favorite moment, and wouldn't think twice if I never saw an episode again. I think that both Seinfeld and Curb are fairly dull, but not as much so as Friends, Wings, or similar shows.

I agree with this guy. Arrested Development is the ******. 9.7 on IMDB doesn't happen on its own!

Fernwood 2night
Dream On (First few seasons at least)
Barney Miller

I honestly would almost rather watch Full House than Seinfeld.

It's not that I disliked Seinfeld, but simply could only take so much of it and found Jerry's writing a bit over-rated. He was a little too stuck on himself.

I thought Fraiser was quite a bit smarter and had better writing.

IMHO - M.A.S.H stayed around way too long and at times became to 'slapstick-ish' for me. The show was at it's it best when it was serious and trying to make a point.

His writing was alright... it was unique. And the way completely unrelated plotlines were brought together by some common bond was masterful. But his acting. My GOD he sucked as an actor.

In order of acting ability -
Michael Richards
Jason Alexander
Julia Louis-Dreyfus
Jerry Seinfeld

Julia Louis-Dreyfus WAAAAAAY overacted her character and it still wasn't as bad as Jerry's performance. Kramer and George just seemed natural, as odd as they were.

I'd rather watch paint dry than Seinfeld...I never did get that show...

Barney Miller was good.
All in the Family was classic in it's day
Night Court was good.
Family Ties wasn't bad.
Way too many good shows to list here, but almost anything was better than Jerry...(even Friends, which I never liked either.)

I've seen the episodes so many times that they've gotten old. But if you couldn't appreciate some of the peak seasons >4/5 you have I don't think much of your sense of humor. The writing got very progressive and really pushed the bounds of the format.

Jerry got a lot better as the seasons went on. I love the show but I can't really tolerate the first couple seasons because Jerry was just so awful.

What's to get? It's a show about nothing!

smarter? fraiser? it was a bit more pretentious. but mostly it wasn't funny, it was more dramalike ..friends style "comedy". no haha funny. i mean it was interesting its first couple years, fraisers a likable fellow. then it bogged down pretty bad.

I think that's the problem. I just didn't have any empathy for Jerry's character, otherwise I might have liked it more. The only character I ever felt bad for was Cramer.

I never cared for Friends, but I have a different twist on the series. While Courteney Cox and Jennifer Aniston were easy on the eyes, think for a second how much BETTER the series would have been if only the dudes were on the show.

I think the hardest I've laughed though was at BBC re-runs of 'Faulty Towers' tied with Sammy Davis Jr showing up as a one eyed, black jew with a limp on 'All in the Family'.

The show was such that it didn't matter how good Jerry was, IMO. Most of the first seasons episodes are classic due to the events occuring and not acting.

To me the defining characteristic of Seinfeld, and what I love most about it, is its total amorality. I remember seeing an interview with Larry David where he talked about how he and Jerry sat down when they created the show and decided there would never be a "very special Seinfeld." The characters would never learn anything from their experiences, and would continue to be completely shallow and self-absorbed from episode to episode. There would never be a moral to the story.

To me, Seinfeld is a pure comedy in way that is essentially unprecedented. The preachy, faux-emotional episodes of MASH and Frasier are, IMO, completely phony and lame (they're kind of the power ballads of situational comedy). Seinfeld, on the other hand, is the real deal - pure booze, no mixer.

As I said in the other Seinfeld thread, I really can't respect an adult who dislikes Seinfeld. That is kind of a deal-breaker for me.

Seriously, the writing was better than EVERY SINGLE live action comedy of its era. There was not a single better written show on television at the time. It was the writing that made the show. Even the later seasons that got worse reviews were extremely well written in a gonzo, cartoonish sort of way.
