damnit this bugs the crap out of me here, I always read how watresses or waiters will spit in your food, or other dasterdly things, how bellhops will drag your lugage throw it around ect. if you don't tip them. now I have always been good about tipping but I have with held tips from bad service. so here is a newsflash for all them there people in the service industry

YOUR NOT ENTITLED TO TIPS!

they should not be "expected" every time you serve joe blow, thats what you get WAGES for. so if you have ever spit, peed in, not washed your hands, in foods, thrown around lugage, destroyed property that wasn't yours. GO TO HELL! SERIOUSLY GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR BUTT!

okay so maybe we aren't entitled to tips

but if we do a good job to you feel better stiffing us?

i mean when i do a crappy job and people don't tip me that's fine, perfectly acceptable

but when i bust my ass off and go out of my way to make you happy, hey a little something in return would be nice :frown:

Unfortunately the wages for service industry jobs is so pathetically low their tips are really the only real money they make.

My experience has been that the people who get their bags crushed or their food spit in are the ones who treated their bellhop/server like sh!t.

One could argue that they choose the job...

one could also argue that you're not doing anything by stiffing them

this was discussed in some 160+ reply topic awhile back ^_^

i seroiusly wish people would just give the waiters/waitresses tips and stuff before ordering,t aht would make things so much more convenient

you get paid don't you? thats "somthing in return" they paid you by paying their bill. if their assholes, so what, many people in this world are assholes, doesn't mean their food should be soiled, or goods destroyed. next time someone is a pisser to you, dont spit in their foot or drop their stuff around, next time tell them truly how much fun you had busting your ass for them. but seriously did they ask you to go out of your way to please them. do you job do it well don't soil / destroy people's stuff. they paid for the food not the spit.

as I said I do tip, but I DON'T TIP people who belive they are entitled to it. this includes snearing at me when I leave the table FORGETTING to tip. (yes it happens I do forget, and yes I have been sneared at I thanked them for their service, tould them what I felt about their snear and went on my marry way.)

ya pay them before they even prove themselves as a good or bad server so you can garentee your stuff gets pissed in by not tipping ahead of time. sounds good to me...I worked in a restaunt, I never "expected" tips, I was glad when I got them, I was glad when I didn't, ya I busted my ass, and ya the pay sucked and at the end of the day I hated the job, but hell I still did it, well, without ever once soiling someones product, or destroying any goods in my posetion

The convention of tipping is widely misunderstood and many degrees of expectations abound. A rampant "lack" of real communication about the subject allows things to continue.

I'd heard that tipping originated with paying someone extra "before" in return for good service to come. Typical "grease the palms" method. There's also something to be said for the tip as a "Christmas Bonus" or "thank you" for service(s) well-rendered. As with the Christmas bonus, one must never come to expect it/them, as the expectations will invariably go unfulfilled and you're left with bitter feelings on both sides.

Like it or not, many states have systems that will tax a server on say, for example, 10% of what they sold under the assumption that they'll receive 10% tips. Other states are allowed to pay under the minimum wage, again under the assumption that the server will make more (or much more) in tips.

If you really don't like the policies in place, don't sit on your ass and whine about it. Go straight to the manager and complain. Talk to the server and get them to complain. Stiffing a server is purely selfish and doesn't do anything near what you're intending it to do. You're wanting to protest the service or tipping in general and instead, it just makes you look like an ass. Bellyaching about it won't change anything.

I was out with some friends for dinner. All the orders were taken and everything was going well. I ordered a cajun shrimp dish. The waitress brought me a cajun chicken dish.
That's cool, everybody makes mistakes. She returned to our table several times to fill drinks and tell me "it won't be much longer". There were seven people in our party. Basically everyone was finished with their meals before I finally got my cajun shrimp dish. I was steamed to say the least, because we had been there for quite some time. She did say that she was sorry it took so long but no "free on us" meal or even a free dessert "on us".

I was not rude to her at all. If I hadn't left any tip, she might have thought I just forgot. So I left her a 25 cent tip.
Did that send her the right signal? :D

Probably not the message you intended but I understand your frustration. I've been there....

There's a very good chance that the issue with the food was with a new cook, or involving mistake by somebody in the kitchen. She may not have had anything to do with it and yet, since she's the "face" you see, she pays (or at least doesn't get the normal tip). One thing to mention here as well is that often servers will have to share their tips ("tipping-out") with the hosts/hostesses, expediters, etc.

If you really wanted to "send a signal", you'd at least consider speaking directly with the manager or jotting down the address and sending a letter. ;)

It can be difficult to do when so much of the system expects the tips for ya. :) Same as the company bonus that you get year after year. You come to expect it and then are slapped in the face when it's cut off and you're told "it's a bonus, don't expect it". It's true. Harsh, sure, but true.

Good points.

I understand it may have been someone elses fault. But I felt like it didn't really matter to her that one of her customers was sitting hungry and frustrated for so long. Hey, toss me some free bread or something, don't just let me sit there. :Q
I mean it was only SHRIMP, not a thick cut of beef.

Actually, tips are expected. It's part of how the service industry works. They could just charge you and put it on your bill as is the case generally with groups but that's not how the system works. Grow up, get a clue, and quit being so cheap. If you have a problem, have the balls to take it up with the person it's with or the management.

Not much..IIRC, some waiters/waitresses get paid about $1.50/hour + tips. If you'll work an 8-hour day for $16, so be it...but tips make their salary. Don't assume you know everything. :p

I fully understand your point, though...I wouldn't tip a poor waiter/waitress much, if at all..

One time we were in an airport and we had a little over an hour to catch a flight, so we thought we would sit down have a sandwich and head over to our gate. We all sit down waitress comes over, is pleasant even jokes around with us, then takes our order, this restaurant had a 10 minutes to your table or it is on us gaurantee, to make a long story short, it took 20 minutes to get our food, they messed up the order, I had ordered a sandwich and soup, she places a bowl of soup in front of me with my sandwich so I ate it, apparently this was the size that was supposed to come with my friends meal not mine, so she brings him the smaller soup bowl and basically tells him tough sh!t that your friend ate it, so we ask to speak with the manager, he fixed the order for us FOR NO CHARGE I'm thinkin that was nice of him, I don't mind paying but that was nice of him, anyways I order a sprite to go and it had a loogie floating on top, I say F$%% this, we get up pay the bill and the 7 of us left a total of 54 cents in pennies arranged to spell out a nice little message for our server. We made it to our flight, but just barely. I ALWAYS tip, but if I go to a restaurant I do not expect the waitress to come in and disrespect me and give me an attitude.

It is true that they only get a few bucks of actual salary, and tips comprise the rest of the salary, but by law if tips + wage does not make up minimum wage, the restaurant has to make the difference, end of story.

CadetLee who do you know of that only makes $1.50 an hour? I've seen some really crappy ones that give you less than minimum wage but nothing that low, more like $4.50 an hour.

Although I'm a very generous tipper, I have to agree with narzy on this one. It should not be expected. It has become custom to subsidize a waiting job with gratuities but those people are always welcome to work somewhere else if they do not like the arrangement. I used to work in a casino and 33% of my pay came from tips. Up until the day I quit, I never understood why people were giving me money for nothing.

Red Lobster here in FL, I think....I was told by a parent of someone who works there - for a full day, they might come back with maybe $30...or 80 - depends...I was told only a couple bucks an hour...if their total income is less than minimum wage, I believe the employer is required to make up the difference.
