Here is a tip for all of you restaraunteurs.
If you want a tip, I expect service.
If I have to get up and pay at the counter, you will not be getting a tip. If I am finished with my first glass of water, and you just sit there and watch me suck on ice, without giving me more water, you will not be getting a tip. If your service levels that of fast food, you will not be getting a tip. If you say "AND?" when I am ordering food, you will not be getting a tip.

I deserve that level of service simply by paying the bill from what I ordered. There's no level of tiered service. I deserve customer service. You give it to me. I decide whether to offset your pay or not. Simple as that. Don't like it? Get a new job.

I like it fine. Most people happily subsidize my extremely crappy wage. :)

I don't get tips. I don't deserve tips. It's my JOB to make the customer happy, and that's what I get paid for.

Nik, i don't disagree with your point. You are right, those of us who work and have worked in the service industry shouldn't expect tips. I am curious as to what it is you do though, as you came on pretty strong there :)

BTW... when I go out, if I have cash to spare, I always tip atleast 15%. I'm not a stingy bastard, but the bills and my woman comes first. I enjoy seeing the face of the person at the register (or wherever). If I have a good day, you'll get a 100%+ tip. In order to get no tip from me, you'll have to do horrid work. Take my order and run off, serve the food/whatever and run off, return with the bill and stand there waiting for me to pay you, etc. I can understand busy nights and such, but it's hard to get no tip out of me.

But people who expect it piss me off to the point where I consider not tipping at all. This is "one of those things" that does a stomp-and-grind with cowboy boots on that one last nerve.

People with your mindset really piss me off. I bust my ass doing my job as well and I can't get tips. You don't deserve them, no matter what you do. That's why it's called a TIP. This actually makes me think about the situation on the highways (yes, I took a couple tangents).

You've got folks who go the speed limit, you've got folks that go their own speed limit and/or with the "flow of traffic". If I'm goin 5-10 over to pass somebody and some yahoo going 25 mph over the speed limit comes running up to my bumper, I'm not gonna get out of the way very quickly because, as with some of the arguments here, the person thinks they're entitled to it and I'm gonna be a bit of an ass, staying within the bounds of the law.

However, if, in a similar situation, somebody is coming on strong behind and leaves a fair distance behind me, I'll get over as soon as I can. There may be a time when I don't notice em. That's my fault and I'll take full responsibility for it. I'd ask that, in return, you realize that no, I'm not a moron, not an idiot, I'm just someone who, for whatever reason, didn't notice you at the moment you expected to be noticed. Unfulfilled expectations.

It's all about awareness of those around you. Unfulfilled expectations cause the majority of problems. Communication gets around that.

they should not be "expected" every time you serve joe blow, thats what you get WAGES for.
as I said I do tip, but I DON'T TIP people who belive they are entitled to it.
It's fairly obvious that you've never worked as a tipped employee. Here's a newsflash: Tips are EXPECTED by every establishment that uses tipped employees. Most states have a different minimum wage for those workers; here I was paid the minimum wage of $2.39/hour the last time I worked as a waiter (almost 3 years ago...AFAIK, it hasn't been increased since then).

I tip well everywhere I go. It's paid off, as well; several of the places I frequent, I've earned the reputation as a good tipper - now, when I eat or drink there, I often am given free food & drink, and merely asked to continue tipping. :D

These tipping threads strike a chord. I'd rather not see them, because I always feel the need to write a reply.

At one of my current jobs, I earn tips. That's right, I earn them. The wages aren't crap, in most cases it's minimum wage or less. I know I'm not entitled to tips, but I'm not a part of the restaurant biz because some cheap restaurant owner pays me well. It's totally up to me to do a good job, to increase the money I take home, each customer, every day. Why should I want to work hard for one person who won't tip when there's someone else who will? I'm only looking out for #1 here. I'm worth it. You personally insult me when you don't tip me for my service. How do you like being insulted? It makes you kind of mad, doesn't it? All I'm going to say is that some people have a tendency to do bad things when they are mad. Lucky for some folks, I'm not one of those people.

well said ^_^

wow, you don't even know what i do and you're saying that you hve a harder job than me

btw you work at a call center so you get i suppose ~13 bucks an hour? okay then STFU

if you have issues with the way management pays us that's fine, take it up with the management, but by stiffing us that does absolutely nothing

BTW, i try to make every customer happy, i always go out of my way etc etc etc, i never said i didn't, but i get pissed off when i get stiffed

i won't even try to argue because this topic has been beaten to death

I think all you people who like to sit in judgement on the service you receive and then decide how much, if anything, you want to tip are on some kind of power trip. Give your 15 percent tip no matter what. If you receive give service, then give more. The only people that don't tip are teenagers and their mental equivalents.

Nope, it's just implied, when I get free stuff (which is most of the time now). Either way, I'm spending less by tipping more. Ironic, eh? :D

the federal law is
Question: Is it legal for waiters and waitresses to be paid below the minimum wage?

Answer: An employer may credit a portion of a tipped employee's tips against the federal minimum wage of $5.15 per hour. An employer must pay at least $2.13 per hour. However, if an employee's tips combined with the employer's wage of $2.13 per hour do not equal the hourly minimum wage, the employer is required to make up the difference.

state laws may vary, but AFAIK , they have to be a higher rate, not lower
