If you could post your current "beta welcome thread" here, all of us could take a look at it and maybe we canc ome up with some more stuff to change/add. :)

My $.02...

I'd love to see a page (here or off-site) with basic information for all the projects... Their main site (for adding in BOINC), a summary of what they do, and a link to their site. Also, I think it would be really useful to generate a set of links for purposes of stats. Could easily be combines into the project summary, and also links for combined BOINC, etc.

Also, I'd love to help research broken projects, come up with data for the links, summaries, etc. I've got time to kill at work. (I'm actually working now, woohoo).

Updated thread, & any changes from the current thread, are in my OP, as well as below.

Fullmetal Chocobo, i think, since the last few updates, we've tried to keep the welcome thread as "clean" as possible. Trying to keep things at a minimum. Each project llinks to their main site where people can read the description for that project.
There are so many stats sites for projects, which to use? List them all? Things might become cluttered.
i'm not trying to discurrage you, still open to suggestions here.

Ok, here we go:

  • The URL for DHEP is wrong, but DHEP is closed anyway, so drop it.
  • Why do you still have Orbit@Home & PlanetQues tint he list? They will probably never get off the ground and are still prepreprepreprepalapha?
  • Same for XtremLab: I know it works (sometimes), but it's still a alpha, or not?
  • Drop Chronos: It doesn't use the standard BOINC client, it's only available in Japanese and I'm not sure if they still send out work or not
  • Drop Predictor@Home, as I said before, they're off the show and probably will never return
  • Drop BURP, they're still testing and what not.
  • I'd add a line behind LHC, saying that the nature of the project allows it only to have work in larger intervalls, and that it's not suitable as a standalone project at the moment
  • I'd add a line behind DIMES that it doesn't use much CPU power, but a lot of Bandwith, and thus can be run along with another DC project
  • I miss QMC@Home (http://qah.uni-muenster.de/)
  • I miss µfluids.net (http://www.ufluids.net/)
  • I miss Stardust@Home (I know, different kind of DC, but still a DC) (http://stardustathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/)
  • Take a look at this. Maybe it's even better than the other one.
  • I'd still change the orde and have BOINC projects first and THEN the others. As a heading you can take something like "Projects with their own Distributed Computing infrastructure" or something like that.

At the bottom of the BOINC projects, I'd add a line saying that there are also other projects, which are still in development/testing/alpha/beta/closed testing, but never the less worth a look or two if they interest the reader of the thread, such as:

Can anyone come up with others of these "still in development/testing/alpha/beta/closed testing" projects worth to mention there?

Pheew, that's it for now I guess. All the thing above are my opinion only, and I'm more than willing to yield to a common agreement amongst all TeAm mates of course. :p

RE: SpaceHead

Well, I was just thinking about that, because there have been several times that me or Liz have gone to a website before voting on the project for the next month, and it takes forever sometimes to find out what in the hell they are doing. So a summary would be very nice.

I definitely see what you mean about keeping the post uncluttered (and thus, not intimidating to new faces). I think I'll have to do a page myself, and post it to seei f anyone else woul find it useful. And I will of course take input from others for stuff to add, and the like.

I was hoping to get more input from members before making the list final. So far only you & Rattledagger have made any suggestion on which projects to list.

These could go into Fardringles BOINC thread, if they aren't there already. Sound good?

Fullmetal Chocobo
Well, typically, isn't a description given on the homepage of a project?
Honestly, since SETI ended, i've done F@H & SoB, so i'm really out of touch, especially with the BOINC projects(other than some stats i did).

Another offsite webpage would be useful. If changes need to be made, it's faster/easier to do them there than haves the mods continually update the welcome thread.

I'll look thru BMC & Rattledaggers (& others) suggestions & make changes soon now. stay tuned ;)

1. What do you mean the distributedcomputing.info site isn't working? You just left in an extra parenthesis! Try this., which has active projects.
2. Do you want to include Cuboid? Where - as a project in testing since it's short, or what?
3. Do you want to include some of the links from your SoB stats threads? (Partly a shameless plug for SBQueue. ;))

Yeah, sorry... i got that link working after i posted. It' in the current thread.

Any idea on how long Cubiod will be around?

Still trying to keep things short-n-sweet.
I'm going to add a line saying if anyone has questions please post in the stats thread for that project, if possible. Then people can direct new members to various add-on, stats, etc. That OK with everyone?

QMC still says it's beta. Keep it or drop it?

Added team names to teh non-BOINC projects where i could find them

Like it? Do the same to the BOINC projects or just leave them in Fardringle's thread, he's got them listed threre?

Yeah, i'm definately going to need help on wich projects to add & drop.

Seems to me the only projects listed in the welcome thread should be currently active, TeAm run projects. No sense in listing projects we don't even have a team for.
.....

Any harm in a newbie starting TA in a new project? ;)

Not really, but I doubt that a newbie will find a new project before anyone else of us does. ;)

Just a quick look at this time, possibly there's more to note later... ;)

Stardust@home - isn't this non-BOINC, using your web-browser and your eyes?

LHC@home - "have work in larger intervalls" Maybe it's me being non-english playing-up, but this sentence looks confusing to me... Maybe something like "Has infrequently work, therefore always join atleast one other BOINC-project" or something would be better...

Project-names - SETI should be capitals... @Home or @home is more or less random, some projects is using both in more or less random fashion so shouldn't really matter...

Team-URL - to ease joining, for BOINC-projects maybe an idea to include example for seti:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/team_join_form.php?id=30191

For HD space requirements, internet traffic & work unit times for each project, look ...
Well, both claims you needs 17 MB free disk-space to run Rosetta@home, but the reality is you needs 191 MB free disk-space to get any Rosetta@home-work...

For the released projects, the BOINC-Wiki includes a table over OS-support, disk and memory-requirements, and some more info. See Catalog of BOINC Powered Projects

- Stardust indeed only uses your browser, no client installation needed.

- bad English: I only threw that sentence together in a second, but it's not my native tongue either, so that's one for the natives to solve :p

- good point about the HD reqquirements, I didn't know that. But what to do?

Well, for the released BOINC-projects, the Wiki does have this info.

For the alpha/beta-projects, the Wiki doesn't include any detailed info... atleast not at the moment...
Also, for many of them hunting for bugs is more important than disk-requirements and so on, and some can also adjust requirements during testing, making it difficult to make a table...

Not at all. But we need to draw the line somewhere.
Or just list every project currently available. In that case we could just link to here & be done with it?

OK, sorry. I'll move Stardust to non-BOINC area.

Reword the LHC thing too.

Drop the pics for HD requirements etc, & add the Wiki link instead?

Thanks guys, i really do appeciate your help.

How do you guys think that looks? Too cluttered with all the links?

Rosetta site kept timing out so i'll add links to that later.

lol, niether of you make sense ;)

I've no idea what "have work in larger intervalls" is supposed to mean but if RD has understood correctly then something like,
'Work units available infrequently ,therefore be sure to join up to at least one other BOINC project'
[update]Just seen that SH has done a decent job here ;)

Yea that link is good for any non TA participated projects :)

Looks good to me btw:thumbsup:

Hi there,

Looking good. I may be mistaken but I cannot find QMC in the list. Also, why not put the link for BOINC in the heading for projects running under BOINC after the heading. To me it looks a little funny seeing as it is underlined.

Great work.

QMC "Our project has reached beta test phase."
Add it or not?

I'd include QMC as well, It's one of the most stable projects that I know for BOINC, regardless of the beta. :)

Space, whenever you PM the mod about the changes, please ask him to make Fardringle's BOINC thread sticky again as well, and this time, if possible, for ever! Tell him, that it's an essential part of the welcome thread and such things. Maybe it works this time.
