Time to get an e-bike? 30% tax credit through BBB plan.

I'm sure there are studies on this, but I always wonder if rebates like this actually save the consumer money, or if the companies just increase the price. If it was real estate, they'd 100% just raise the price. But I think the rebates help scale up EVs and helped drive the cost lower.

I haven't ever looked at ebikes in much detail, but I assume a $5K one is a pretty loaded up bike. My friend got a large cargo bike with e-assist for $4K IIRC.

This would be very hard to implement, but it'd be nice if the credit was based on use or required some proof of use. Since a lot of people buy bikes with good intentions and they sit collecting dust.

I sometimes toy with the idea of getting an electric "fat bike" for commuting instead of using the truck. They work year round due to bigger tires that can manage the snow.

I'd want to still be able to pedal, but the idea is I could use electric function to go to work so I'm not showing up all sweaty, then I can pedal back home to actually get a work out at same time.
 
E-bikes are great when its hot and humid outside and you want to get somewhere not being a sweaty mess. Should the government be subsidizing E-bike purchases? Probably not.

They subsidize electric cars. Electric bikes are great for getting people around and helping to break some car dependency in cities. Cargo bikes can carry groceries and kids; standard e-bikes can help you get to work without looking like a ball of sweat.
 
Income phaseout seems awfully low. $75,000 for single and $150,000 for joint.

I'm more interested in e-motorbikes. I want to get Arcimoto.

I think 2 or 3 wheel motorcycles have 30% tax credit up to $7,500 max. And income phaseout limit is lot higher at $400,000 for single and $800,000 for joint. Maybe in 2023 for me if Arcimoto opens a store in Georgia.
 
E-bikes can get people out of cars and help ease traffic in congested cities, which also helps emissions. It's a matter of providing the right infrastructure and rules for safe riding with non motorized cyclists. I use my regular bike around the NYC area in place of a car sometimes. It's often much faster and cheaper and efficient.
 
Seriously, would consider an electric mountain-bike that was tough enough/had a compliant enough suspension to say hop a curb at 20 mph and stay in control while ducking traffic.

I would never ride one of the slow, fragile & clumsy moving-targets I see folks riding on in traffic all the time though. (sometimes with a kid or groceries on a trailer!) It's dangerous enough driving a small car!
 
The other issue is providing safe parking for these expensive bikes. Jersey City is doing one of, if not the the first, municipal bike parking projects in the country. This will be at a major transit station for the path train. amazing it's taken this long but better late than never.

Meanwhile, my daughter's school doesn't even have bike racks.

Idk.... in New Haven if there was anything far short of an armed guard standing over those expensive electric bikes with their valuable and easily accessible batteries constantly I'd say they would 100% get fvcked with.

Yeah, we have a gate to school from our neighborhood. Supposed to be for walkers and bikers, but there are probably at least 75 car pickups from that gate every day, making it unsafe for kids. Then no bike racks. Actually not just no racks, they actually make kids leave their bikes and scooters on the outside of the fence, no where to lock them, where anyone can walk right up to them.

I keep meaning to contact the school board but haven't yet.
