Basically he cares about his privacy and wants the focus to be on Apple and not himself. But he also realizes that there are a lot of people in the world that live with physical and mental abuse every day because of their sexual orientation. So if knowing that the CEO of one of the worlds largest and most successful companies in the world is gay can bring comfort or inspire, then he thinks it's worth giving up his privacy.

Overall I thought it was pretty well written. I am not sure why people are hung up on the "proud to be gay" statement.

Is it just me or is everyone getting tired of the gay thing? My son, who IS gay, is so sick of the "Hip to be Gay" trend that is all over the place.
 
"Proud" sounds more like "I'm not disappointed" than "I am so super happy". However, he does seem happy and not disappointed.

And why proud?

Probably because how society used to treat openly or suspected gay people -- legally and "off the record".

My gay friend came out in his 30s. He is very happy about it years later still. The amount of denial he had to live in and the straight front he had to put on, he's probably super happy that it's over. Younger kids probably don't/didn't have to go through that and didn't live in hiding for so long. Probably quite a few like him or know people like him.

Seemed like pretty common knowledge, but more importantly isn't really important. I don't really care about the personal lives of company execs, and it makes sense why he never "officially" acknowledged it. He's the CEO of a tech company, and his personal life means diddly shit about the products and services they're offering.

I guess the only parallel you can draw from this is there's quite a few new iphones that aren't straight either. 😛
 
I don't care what orientation he is, what I care about is that he does the absolute best job possible leading Apple.

It's one thing to be happy with who you are. Everyone should be.

But to be proud of who you are? To me pride connotes boastfulness, and public display of your achievement. Sexuality is not an achievement.

Things that one should be proud of:
Bowling a 300 game
Being able to juggle chainsaws
Being the CEO of one of the worlds most successful corporations

Things that one should not be proud of:
Being male
Being female
Having hair
Being bald
Being straight
Being gay


I guess the idea of being proud of things you can't control, even if you're a minority, doesn't click with me.

I'd pretty much agree with that. It's something people do in a lot of different areas of life though. Most things you can think of that people once might have felt ashamed of have now turned the corner and gone to the opposite extreme. Fat people are proud of being fat, ignorant people are proud of their ignorance, short people are proud of being short, southerners are proud of their confederate flags, etc. People may feel kind of strange about comparing proud gay people to proud confederate flag wavers, but it's the same human impulse that causes gay people to go so far into the "pride" direction as causes the southerners to plaster confederate flags all over their trucks.

It's a kind of push-back against the social taboos that made them feel bad about something in the past. It's their version of "You don't like this? Well I'm gonna show you. Not only am I [insert attribute]! I'm proud of [insert attribute]! Now what"?

It doesn't really matter what pride connotes to you since the use of proud (and pride) in this context isn't particularly new. To say you are proud that you are gay/white/female whatever is to say that regardless of what others think of that aspect of you you embrace it.

One word, two similar but different meanings. Not hard to comprehend.

I think the idea of pride in something like being gay is as a rejection of the all-too-common belief that it's something one should be ashamed of.

P.S. I dress my newborn son up in a pink coat because I can't be bothered to get him a new coat. His sister's hand me down is good enough at this age.

Not sure why you have to be proud to be gay or straight. Proud means to me as an achievement by someone. I'm proud that my son/daughter good grades in school/finished college/has a good career.
 
Why is he so proud of being gay? I see no upside. When I was in my late teens I was tall and skinny. In order to gain weight I started eating a lot of potatoes. I used to eat 5 lbs in one sitting. When nature called, man oh man was it difficult getting it out. Stretched my asshole. Again, no upside.

Of course, there's no upside for being politically incorrect...
 
Speaking as an average, middle-class raised white straight guy from the USA: minorities, perceived or not (gay, handicapped, black, native, whatever), care a whole lot more about their minority than most of the rest of us do.

I see things like this doing damage. People like me want to assimilate into a singular culture, a melting pot of all the good things we all bring, and then we have people standing out say "LOOK AT ME! I AM A <GAY|BLACK|FEMALE/> <CEO|ENTERTAINER|PLUMBER>! AREN'T I SO DIFFERENT AND PROUD?!"

Fucking A. Give it a rest and get back to living your life and everyone else will too.
