Tim Cook is proud to be gay.

Not sure why he's proud of a sexual orientation but whatever.

Here's the Bloomberg article:

http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2014-10-30/tim-cook-im-proud-to-be-gay

It wasn't a secret, but I guess he felt he had to say something about the disappointing direction of some US states, and "coming out" helps when writing such an article. However, if I were in his shoes, I'm not sure I would have used the same wording. I guess he is truly "proud" but most people I know, gay or straight, aren't actually "proud" of whatever their sexual orientation may be. It just "is".

P.S. Off topic: I hope his legacy for new products at Apple is more than the iWatch. I still can't see a point to the thing.

Good for him. I hope the stock price doesn't go down though because of it. Shouldn't have any effect on the company.. but... who the hell knows.

It's pretty easy to understand why he's proud and why he's making such a statement since you've provided one of many reasons. I'm guessing you've never seen gay pride stickers, gay pride parades, etc...

Wait. Didn't we already know he was gay before he took over for Jobs?

I wouldn't say I'm proud to be straight. I am honestly a bit grateful though. Life's so much easier when you're straight.

We've known he was gay for a while.

I just don't get the idea of being "proud" about anything that you couldn't really control.

Being proud to be america/german/chinese/korean/gay/straight/trans. Makes absolutely no sense.

I think "proud" here is similar to the way one might say they are proud of their citizenship. e.g. "proud to be an American"

It's not really the same thing as being proud of something you have accomplished, for example.

I dont think any straight person, such as myself, that has no experience living in a world where you are actively discriminated against because of who or what you are, is in a position to question why someone in his shoes feels the way they do.

I've been to the pride parades many times in Toronto, although not recently. They're always fun.

Indeed, these days it seems it's more about partying than it was 20 years ago.

I think many people who are visible minorities in North America for example, can say they have experience. esp. if they were alive 30 years ago.

If he makes it public he is the one who opens it up to questioning.

If he was proud of being gay he would not have hidden it for so long. Period. I won't question him about being gay and I won't even question him about being proud of being gay. I do however feel perfectly justified in questioning him for being a hypocrite.

I'm shocked... said nobody, anywhere.

Good for him for taking a stand. Takes balls.

It's a shame that anyone has to take a stand over their sexuality though...

In a more perfect world no one would care about such things aside from getting laid.

...

I do applaud him for taking a stand publicly.

I guess the word "proud" can have different connotations, and different significance to many people. Perhaps I just thought that in this day an age, most of us had moved past the need to feel proud of our sexual orientation.

P.S. Now that I think of it, I said to friend once who is a lesbian. She was pretty annoyed at me.

They don't have to. I think people have continued in "taking a stand" long after it mattered or anyone cared about it though. Years ago it would have generated a response, maybe caused some change. Now you can see everyone's response is basically "meh, whatever" when someone says anything about it. We're past that for the most part, but grandstanding never gets old for those involved in it.

bingo.

Yes, and they are openly criticized, today, for saying similar things and when protesting that certain rights and protections are being eroded.

WTH is this crap?

In order to be proud, one has to accomplish something in that regard.

Proud to be gay? You didn't really accomplish ANYTHING

It's no different than "proud to be American" or "proud to be <insert nationality>"

Why be proud of something that fell into your lap?

Be proud of being a CEO of Apple, now there is something to be proud of.

Why is it always gay people that need to be proud. I hardly ever see heterosexuals advertising or being proud to be one.

Stupid, I'm sorry.

Cause yesterday he wasn't as proud as he is today.

And apple needs SOME publicity, same old shit over and over ain't going to cut it ya know?

What do they need more publicity for? They're already selling all of the iPhone 6 models they can produce.

Maybe he should have came out when they released the iPhone 5C instead... that stinker could have used some extra publicity 🙂
