They don't have to.

In most places in America they probably don't. However, Apple sells gadgets around the world. Not every country is "meh" about a persons sexuality. Even places in America are still bad. It is not illegal to discriminate against gays and lesbians over employment in some states.

So my statement still applies.

WTH is this crap?

In order to be proud, one has to accomplish something in that regard.

Proud to be gay? You didn't really accomplish ANYTHING

It's no different than "proud to be American" or "proud to be <insert nationality>"

Why be proud of something that fell into your lap?

Be proud of being a CEO of Apple, now there is something to be proud of.

Why is it always gay people that need to be proud. I hardly ever see heterosexuals advertising or being proud to be one.

Stupid, I'm sorry.

It's a way for someone in a discriminated group who is well accomplished to essentially say fuck you to all the people that have been trying to hold them down. Lets not forget that a majority of states still wont allow them to get married because a bunch of bible thumping assholes believe they are going to hell, so lets not pretend that gay rights is some battle they have already won.

I dont think any straight person, such as myself, that has no experience living in a world where you are actively discriminated against because of who or what you are, is in a position to question why someone in his shoes feels the way they do.

When will being gay quit being a thing? Who the fuck cares anymore? It is like coming out against segregation: yeah, about 99.9% of us are on board with it and don't give a flying fuck.

To be sure there are still things that need to change, such as wide acceptance of gay marriage, but I know of people who are supportive of gay but have an issue with changing their definition of marriage. Just like minorities can still feel pockets of racism with a slim minority being racist.

Is gay going to be the new thing for the next 50 years? It feels like for the past 15 years it is such a non-issue and the only ones who care about it are other gay activists.

TLDR - NOBODY FUCKING CARES ANYMORE!

I think it is one of those things that you grow up being conditioned to think it is something bad or negative. Many people view homosexuals as some sort of deviants and that they should be ashamed of being gay. Some people actually get angry and want to beat or kill people for being gay.

So, I suspect that it is a very difficult thing to admit openly, especially for someone his age who grew up in a time when it wasn't talked about freely.

I'm not sure why someone admitting who they are and being proud of it bothers you or anyone else though. It isn't stupid and maybe it will help others who are dealing with the same feelings.

Don't kid yourself. Plenty of people care... and they're very active in their hatred. Look at the idiot at the Dallas Airport spewing hatred because of a dude wearing a pink shirt.

Bingo.

I do applaud him for taking a stand publicly.

I guess the word "proud" can have different connotations, and different significance to many people. Perhaps I just thought that in this day an age, most of us had moved past the need to feel proud of our sexual orientation.

P.S. Now that I think of it, I said to friend once who is a lesbian. She was pretty annoyed at me.

"Pride" in the context of "gay pride" is about being whatever the opposite of "ashamed" is.

Maybe it was a poor choice of words once upon a time, but moot point is moot, and English is notoriously flexible anyway.

 Every idiot in here posting negative comments needs to read this. And if they still feel the need to belittle this man or post negative comments they need to read it again and again until it sinks in.

Because of the many people who'd prefer that he were ashamed of it.

It's even more of an accomplishment to be both at the same time. Which is the point.

Wait. Didn't we already know he was gay before he took over for Jobs?

I wouldn't say I'm proud to be straight. I am honestly a bit grateful though. Life's so much easier when you're straight.
speaking from experience?? You tried the gay life style out....
