Ticket for an "improper acceleration?"

Yep, it's called reckless driving and can lead to points on your license. Don't automatically plea guilty. Take it to court.

yea. they can ticket you for improper display of speed (i.e. you accelerate too quickly).

I got pulled over for passing a cop once. I quickly pointed out that he wasn't doing the speed limit. He said some BS about it didn't look good. I tried not to laugh, of course he let me go.

A machine shop buddy of mine back in '01 got one in his Geo Metro for chirping the tires.

That's bull. Fight it. Point out that you were not above the speed limit at the time that the cruiser went to pull you over, and check the rules of the road for anything about acceleration - you might find something about safe acceleration. Argue police bias against yellow Corvettes?

Did a bit of Googling. It is indeed considered a moving violation offense, at least in some states, to make an "Exhibit of Acceleration", i.e. showing off. And from checking the OP's sig, I'll put my money on him showboating :roll:.

There's probably a city ordinance on it. There is in the town I work for..it also mentions revving engines. Yeah, I know...but it's law. You may be able to get out of it, but no guarantees.

Here the ticket is called "Speed Racing", which actually covers quite a long list of offenses, some of which are "Show of acceleration", "Unnecessary acceleration", etc...

It's a rather subjective law, IMHO...he may have a good chance in court.

Were you actually accelerating very quickly? Frankly, it's a big waste of fuel and needlessly dumps extra pollution into the air if you always accelerate like that. This is the feel-good reason for giving you a ticket; the actual reason is the city can earn money off of you for not driving like everyone else.

You can fight it, but I hope you lose, frankly. If you want to be a racer, go do that on a closed track. Better yet, go hit the freeway; you can reasonably have a high acceleration on the on-ramp.

QFT. If nothing else, you never know if there's some idiot running the red light or some pedestrian crossing improperly. Two additional good reasons not to do this.
