it's advertising. you shouldn't be swayed one way or the other by advertising.

this beer will get you laid.
this car makes you manly.
this car protects your family.
this cologne will make women want to have sex with you.

advertising is all lies. when you really break it down, the point of advertising is to cause an emotional response in people and to convey information. in that regard, this is an effective ad campaign.

the simple fact is for many people OS X is a great operating system on solid hardware. for others XP/ Vista on more customizable hardware fills their needs.

I never understand why there need to be rivalries. XP vs OS X, Chevy vs Ford, etc. Who cares? Buy what's good for you and the rest doesn't matter.

If you don't let your product choice define your identity, then you won't take advertising personally.

You guys obviously aren't CS majors are you? Almost every professor I have owns a Mac. Some of them have actually testified in court in some of the MS lawsuits......
I am almost embarrassed to have a windows laptop in class.....🙂

didn't MS bail-out apple awhile back?

something like that. it amazes me that people don't realize how much of a stake bill gates has in apple. thats why at the end of Pirates of Silicon Valley, it ends with apple conceding power to microsoft.

Microsoft invested $150 million in Apple to avoid patent lawsuits.

Microsoft should've said screw it. They had the money to drag it out. Maybe Bill Gates didn't feel like giving the money to lawyers and figured they can make some money.

Apple had a lot of money too. 😉 They may have had a relatively small market share with their OS, but when you're the only company that can make the hardware that your OS runs on (except for a short time), that gives you a decent sized market share in the hardware market. I think Apple actually had the largest market share of any hardware company for a long time - there were a lot of companies making PCs, one making Macs.

Whether they would have had a case is a different story, since Apple and Microsoft both borrowed ideas from Xerox.

That is... kind of strange actually. I don't think it's typical. 😉 Although I could see OS X being a lot more appealing to a computer science guy than previous versions.

Not sure what the wink meant. Apple was on the verge of bankuptcy at the time. The ceo was booted and marked the return of Jobs. For some it was that Microsoft bailed out Apple while others Microsoft was bailing itself out of future lawsuits. But right they borrowed ideas from Xerox anyhow.

Well, most professors are hippies so... 😉

One of the biggest reasons MS invested in Apple was to avoid Antitrust lawsuits. At the time it looked like Apple might be going the way of the dinosaur. If they went under that would have put MS even closer to being a monopoly that the government might go after.

There newest commercial about upgrading to vista doesn't even say anything about Macs. It says, Windows needs upgrades to run Vista...
But when you upgrade a Mac you throw it away and buy a new one. How unprogressive is that?
To a linux fanboy, both methods suck ass.
Their attitude is: "Why not make the OS itself better, instead of just requiring more horsepower?"
I think the day may come when I too join the ranks of Linux users and stop paying tons of money for bloated software.

I've noticed the phenomenon too although I think most professors use it because its easy to use and they don't have to hassle and at the same time, it has a terminal.

Many Linux distros are becoming bloated. I use Linux everyday, before you ask.

You should know that the vidz are much higher quality on apple's website than on youtube.

EDIT: this is my favorite apple commercial, too bad it's not real

I actually found the name of it on macs website, but youtube doesn't require quicktime, and I hate quicktime.

I've never understood why people hate those Mac ads so much. 😕 I thought PC people gave up on hating Apple years ago when their market share became inconsequential.

I couldn't care less about Macs. The commercials are insulting both to PC users and to the intelligence of anyone watching them.

This is understandable. In my experience, there are two types of mac users. Those who worship the Temple of Apple and believe they can do no wrong, and those who teeter between PCs and Macs while owning and maintaining both systems. The latter are a bit more level headed about the pros and cons, and I'd like to think I'm one of them. I recently got a Macbook Pro, and I love the machine and the OS, but I've also been a PC user and have used Windows since the 3.1 days, and used it more than I've used apple.

Now I don't consider myself a zealot, but at times, it's hard not sound like it because some aspects of the apple hardware or software can be pretty exciting. I have noticed, recently, that there's a lot of hatred toward mac users now. Sometimes if I even breath the fact that I use OS X and like it more than Windows on these tech forums, someone will say that I'm being a Mac zealot and think I'm so elite or whatever, which just isn't true (the zealot part, I AM elite😀). It's like all the windows fans are now becoming zealots themselves.

Nowadays, with the Intel Macs and all, I'll even recommend users buy an iMac or Mac Mini (esp if they're not tech heads), because it'll run windows IF they need it, and if they ever need help, they can just walk into any Apple Store and get it or call up Applecare, which is one of the top ranked CS departments (along with IBM/Lenovo's Thinkpad CS).

No one can deny that Apple has done something right in marketing, though. Their Apple Stores make far more per square foot than any other retail store, including Neimann Marcus, Tiffany's, or Sak's Fifth.

No, it's not. It's yet another mantra that gets repeated over and over again. But in the AT forums, there are no Mac fanboys. Not to say that there are many Vista fanatics, but there are some users who regularly bash Mac users for their choice (goku, spikespiegal, to name two prominent ones... more users of this kind can be found conveniently by searching for "apple" in ATOT). But many just confuse advertisements and the actual userbase a bit.

There are some forums with a big Mac fan base out there but I bet the average complaining Anandtecher hasn't even seen them. And I've not encountered yet a Mac user who hates Windows just because "winsupersite.com sucks". And if you encounter the occasional fanboy in real life, well we all know somebody who for whatever reason thinks that Windows is the best thing since sliced bread.

Who decided that it's okay to judge Apple products by their userbase, anyway?

Not me. It would take more than that to make me want to buy Windows Vista...something like Windows Vista offering something to make it worth the money, time and aggravation for the upgrade.

yeah well those commercials were more of a joke then really a commercials. i doubt it convinced many people. either way, that guy was fired. apple is going to do something else.

Opposed to Macs where they only have to write 12 drivers to support all their old hardware. Because when you upgrade a Mac, you throw it away.

If you say so as I wouldn't know, I never owned a Mac. WTF would anybody get their panties in a wad over that commercial? Is it because they portray Windows Fanbois as fat nerds?

Yeh, with all that money you dropped on the mac, it will be a while before you can afford to.

On a serious note, I remember reading an iBook review (or whatever they call their notebooks) that started out with the reviewer admiring the design of the styrofoam packaging. Admiring the design of the styrofoam packaging. It really provided some good insight into the mind of an Apple customer.
