Really? Why don't you quantify that opinion for us and explain precisely why they are "crap"?

Because they don't use Macs in their studio? :p

I'm curious. How is it that you have such a painfully simple intellect and yet have a Purdue email addy? Campus security? Janitorial services? Cafeteria technician?
That comeback was as crappy as radiohead's latest album.
Ah...so you're on the debate team, too. Quite the Renaissance Man aren't you?
Hey, just because I'm winning this debate.. it doesn't mean I'm on the debate team. It's natural talent.

If you're not defending them I can't imagine what a defense would look like :) In regards to the comment above about the lyrics being mashed together and your saying why they did it, the reasoning is moot if the end product is disliked by the consumer. Personally I don't give a rat's ass about why they do anything. I know that their first real album was very good and I've liked the others less and less since. OK computer was the last I gave the time of day to because I saw their sound getting less and less musical and more industrial noise (if I had to give it a genre). And by that I mean just a messy throwing together of sounds that don't really tickle my fancy.

Whether I "get" radiohead or not doesn't matter to me. I simply don't care for them anymore.

See that's the difference between Radiohead and other bands, they don't produce music for you. They produce it for themselves. Whether you like it or not doesn't really mean much to them. You really don't have to "get" them, you either like them or you don't. It's not like a secrety indie cult that most people make t out to be. That whole personality of music snob people pisses me off because of this reason. If you don't like it, fair enough, don't listen to it. You are entitled to your own opinion. And yes, you'd know if I was defending them, something I don't really do for music. (You've seen some of my posts here yes?;))

Radiohead is a load of contrived bollocks. If they don't like the industry so much, why do they insist on releasing material through a major label with heavy promotion? They are as much a part of the machine as Brittany Spears, but a million times more hypocritcal.

Ah...the classic cycle of a band's popularity.

*Band is totally unknown.

*Band starts to gain a following.

*Some label interest...maybe an EP released.

*Fans are psyched that "their" band is starting to do well and are touring.

*Major label interest....large contract signed....critically acclaimed album....huge tour...."original" fans jizzing themselves.

*Many "new" fans jump on the bandwagon thanks to exposure via major label.

*Albums released with label promotion, etc.

*"Original" fans now label the band a "sellout" and turn up their noses.

How many times have we seen this happen?

So, if Radiohead maintain that they release music for themselves why do they do so through a major label?

And Radiohead rocks.

Wow, what an egotistic post. ;)

Looks like everyone else is jealous of your superior intellect as well.

It's good he is not pulling the "retirement stunt". How many bands do that only to have a "reunion tour" three years later?

LOL, exactly! The fact that they allegedly make music for themselves only, makes me dislike them even more. Why devote your life, your career, to being an entertainer if you're not going to cater to your audience? What's the point of being an entertainer anyway? I'm so happy to see Pearl Jam's recent releases do squat. They're getting what they wished for.

Did you not read what a contract was? They signed a 6 album contract. That means they have to make 6 albums. As far as why they are still doing it? I don't know, this might be a hard concept for you but some people actually like making music for themselves. Capital is just a venue for them to release their efforts. Now that they are free, I'm sure we'll all be seeing Radiohead on their own terms again.

I still like them, btw, and Pearl Jam too. They do seem to be a tad hypocritical though, and "We don't care if you like it, we are releasing the music for us" bit is a load of bs. Like you said, why a major label? Why the covers of Rolling Stone and Spin? SNL? I really don't care if they are popular or not, I still like their music, but Thom is getting a little too artsy for his own good. Like I've said in a thread a while ago about it, Radiohead is art music for the masses. :p

Oh, and for whoever said it a little ways up, stfu about Pink Floyd already. I like them as much as the next guy/gal, but it is so bizarre how obsessed this board is with them (especially seing how the general tone is anti-artsy fartsy).

Finally, a Radiohead fan who sees them for what they are. Everyone reaches a point in their lives when they feel their musical tastes need to mature with them. So they turn to more artsy music, not becuase they like it necessarily, but because it's what's right. You shun people who listen to manufactured popular music, and feel elevated by this pained art you've discovered (along with 100 million other Americans). But I see that as a sense of conformity as well. I say like what you want, regardless of who bags on it. I saw Duran Duran a few weeks ago, and loved it! I can appreciate the fun energy of "The Reflex" as much as I can appreciate the musical genius behind a Floyd piece because they both appeal to me. Not because it's what everyone else my age listens to. (See DMB, John Mayer, Coldplay.)

From below:
So, I put it to you, to explain to me, and others, why Radiohead feel the need to sign a six album deal when all they want to do is enjoy their own music.
Exactly. Why do they release music to the public at all, and accept money for it? They should do it as a hobby only, and just enjoy it for themselves. If someone else wants to hear it, give it away.

I fully understand the concept of a band choosing to make music for their own enjoyment, regardless of whether they accumulate fans or not.

However, I am at a complete loss as to why a band, like Radiohead, with such deep contempt for the industry feel the need to sign a contract with a major label, an entity they despise, knowing full well they will be obligated, against their desires, to perform at venues chosen by the label, conduct interviews with mainstream magazines and other media, release material when told, make music videos and other promotional items, and generally whore themselves for the sake of a contract they don't seem interested in fulfilling in the first place.

So, I put it to you, to explain to me, and others, why Radiohead feel the need to sign a six album deal when all they want to do is enjoy their own music.
