The upstream transformer is probably providing a certain level of current limiting is my guess. Now on a 48v DC system, you don't want to be near when there is a dead short situation. :biggrin: Some of those batteries are made of glass too, for added sharp shrapnel.

Distance is your friend. On a typical 60A 480V 3ph circuit that has long feeders one can hear the rattle of the THHN conductors inside the conduit when a large motor starts. Or even better if it's stalled and you jog the controls. It will sound like tiny martians inside tapping out morse from within the confines of the EMT! :biggrin:

Those magnets are a lot more powerful than MRI magnets.

MRI magnets are typically 1.5 T, with top-end magnets being 3 T and research level magnets being 7 T.

The old LHC deflector magnets are 8.33 T, they are wound with 36-strand x 23 AWG cable with an operating current of 11.8 kA.

The latest upgrade brings some of the magnets up to 11 T - operating current stays at 11.8 kA, but the cable is thinner and there are more turns (2 layers of 56 turns in 6 blocks). These magnets are electrically interesting because the back EMF from a current interruption, if you are unlucky enough to encounter it, bites back with an energy of about 10 MJ.

Yeah. An old research MRI. There were a variety of field strengths available a number of years ago. These days, serious research has all moved to 7 T, and 4 T/4.7 T has been totally abandoned.
