I think if I had a rule of thumb while having a cable hanging from a helicopter it would be that if it gets caught somewhere don't land till it gets uncaught. If you have to hover while someone climbs up to undo it then that's safer than trying to land with a cable that will form an upwards arc. I guess they were hoping it would still clear the blades but it didn't. Could have ended so much worse too.

There is a release on the helicopter end. There was no need to attempt to land with the cable draping.
