$60+ oil and $3 gas are around the corner, IMO.

Destroyed? Where are you getting your information from?
The CEO has said the explosion probably reduced plant output by 5 percent or less. It is far from destroyed and is still pumping out fuel.

Yep, projected impact is 2-3% on the price of oil. Not good though.

Never underestimate the power of greed. Someone will start pumping when the price hits a certain point.

Serously, no sh$t. People at my work b$tch all the time about gas prices. "You know I was goimg to fill up yesterday when gas was $1.85 but didn't, and today it is at $1.95. I am so mad I didn't fill up yesterday!" WTF kind of crap is that....you knew you V10 truck only got 11 mpg when you bought the damn thing. So don't go out to lunch 1 day a week and you will more than make up the difference in price.

Sundog - not to fight with ya, but believe it or not there are those whose budgets ARE that tight. I agree there is alot of bitching from folks that this likely does not really hurt. Unfortuantly, I do know some (myself included) that these prices are killing.

It isn't because I live extravagently in my 2 bedroom apartment and one used car either. . .

Please...

if you can't afford the gas, then make due with other means...

Oil prices will continue to rise as China and India steadily become bigger and bigger oil hogs. 2 billion plus there and they all one day hope to own a car or two.

Drilling in Alaska and rebuilding Iraq's oil industry won't make much of a difference to your gas prices.

I can't wait till things get rough for you and whatever income level you might have. Not everyone lives where there is public transportation or alternatives. I'm making do, and will be able to for quite some time yet, however, it is definatly affecting my spending, my quality of life, and other areas. Will I die just yet? No. . .

What you don't understand is most ppl in the country are average. Many of them don't post here on anandtech or hang in your circles, I'm sure. However, they are those that this economy depends on. When the average middle class family starts to cancel vacations, work more, spend less, it will eventually cause a spiral in the economy that may even affect you.

You don't have to tell me about average and what middle america is all about. I am also glad you wish doom on me too...

Say what you want, but I'm not going to bitch and moan about spending $10-20 more a week on gas. It's a waste of time and I have no control over it.

If you need more cash, quit spending some much time on your ass staring at that monitor and get another job.

Ok, but where is it that you will complain? Should all of us have to have 2nd jobs to pay for fuel? I certainly don't wish doom to you either. My point was to get you to see that while 10$ to 20$ a week may not affect YOU it does affect others. I'd like to know, out of nothing but sheer curiosity, where do gas prices need to go to affect you?

FINE! Thats what I am trying to get across to you. There are millions of people in the United States that are having 'bigger problems' because of gas prices.

Just because someone does not have high earnings capacity does not mean they should be doomed by fuel prices. As much as it is hard to believe many, many, persons live at a meager level in this country and the 10 to 20 dollars a week extra takes away from important things like health care, food, clothes, etc.

Should everyone in the world have to work 2 jobs now simply for the fuel to get to work and around?

Driving a car is not a right...it is just like everything else...you have to pay for it.

How correct you are. Employment isn't a right either. All of this I agree totally with you about.

What I just would like you to give a nodding glance to, is the fact that sooner or later the high fuel prices are going to severly and adversely affect our economy. It will be more difficult for persons to get to work, there will be increased prices for EVERYTHING (due to the fact that everything you buy is moved in a truck), and inflatiojn will get much worse - in fact much worse than wages.

Really, I acknowledge your correctness in the fact that bitching is not going to solve anything. I've written my congressmen about promoting alternative fuel sources to protect America's future. Other than reducing my spending, and directing my dollars straight out of this country to the Arab Fuel Producing nations - there isn't much I can do about it.

Please just acknowledge that this is a REAL PROBLEM. It is not something that millions of Americans can just brush off. Eventually, it will affect you. I can guarantee it may be 10-20 dollars for you now - but what happens when our gas prices get similar to Holland (6.00 plus a gallon now). Everything you buy in a store will raise in price as well. Hope you don't live in a cold state either - after all it isn't a 'right' to keep warm in the winter. I suppose all the apartment buildings should just add wood burning stoves. O wait a minute - we cut down all the trees already.

We could go back and forth all day.

I'm just looking for an admission that this is a real problem for alot of ppl. It may not be a problem for you - but it really is for alot of people. Also your get a 2nd job reply just isn't practical and you know it. After all over 8% of Americans can't even find the 1st job right now.

Gas prices elsewhere in the world are between 3 and 4 dollars per gallon, and the US isn't the far-and-away greatest demand for oil anymore. Eventually, gas prices here will level out with the rest of the world.
