The worst parts of Windows 7

Why did Microsoft have to come out with new, buggy, and incompatible versions of two of the most-used built-in apps bundled with the OS.

I have a friend that installed Windows 7 beta 1, and he's having a heck of a time getting online television media players to work properly. I can just imagine how corporations are going to feel, as I'm sure that they probably just standardized on IE7, and now MS rolls out IE8.

Why do we need a new browser anyways? What was wrong with IE7? I thought that it was the best version of IE yet, best security and the most standards-compliant (compared to IE5 and IE6).

Keep in mind that the IE 8 build included in Windows 7 Beta is not the most recent (release candidate) version. And MS has done a lot of work to improve IE's compliance with web standards, while simultaneously trying to avoid breaking all the sites that include old IE hacks. There is a Compatibility View list you can use to try and have IE 8 behave more like previous versions.

last time I checked, windows 7 and the version of internet explorer included in windows 7 beta 1, are still in a beta state.

i thought IE8 also had a IE7 compaitlble mode built into it, I could be wrong though

Why do we need new models of cars when the Model T is the best Ford yet? So should we just quit all future progress in science and technology because what we have today is good enough?

The software is BETA. Of course it is going to be buggy, so there is NO REAL POINT OF COMPLAINING YET, except to troll.

IE8 and WMP have been buggy as hell for me too. After they both locked up on me numerous times I just forgot about them and used Firefox and MPC/VLC instead. No biggie, and understandable considering they're both Beta. What's important is that Windows Explorer works. I can see how IE8 crashes would be a pain though if you were a web developer and needed to preview stuff in IE to check for compatibility.

WMP12 seems quite snappy for me, but I haven't used IE since Firefox hit the streets and I use Chrome a lot now too.

What, are you crazy? Are you affiliated with Mozilla corp or what? I need IE, most of my web development work is tested on IE, millions of people use IE - especially in the enterprises. The new version is even better.

Edit:

These two components: IE and Media Player is opposed by EU and Mozilla Corp, so basically your comments are very suspicious to me.

So far Internet Explorer 8 is my only gripe about Windows 7. Everything works so well except for the constant crashes in that program.

But it's not a big deal to me, i installed Firefox and i've yet to have a single crash or problem since. ;)

WMP 12 and IE 8 have worked well for me on build 7000 and even a bit better on build 7022, no show stoppers playing mp3s, dvds, avi's, basic stuff like that. IE 8 has crashed on the 7000 a couple of times, been using 7022 for only a couple days but no crashing.

Considering WMP11 is an unbelievably bug-ridden piece of junk, WMP12 must surely be an improvement? Does it at least have the sense to load all thumbnails at one go when first started up, instead of trying, and failing dismally, to load them on-the-fly as you scroll (thus forcing you to spend 10 minutes jerkily trying to scroll it up and down in order to get it to actually load the thumbs so it will actually scroll with a usable degree of smoothness)? Does it allow you to add specific directories to the library without insisting on re-reading everything that's already there? Does it manage to not continuously lose already entered tag-information and to resist over-writing correct info and art with incorrect stuff? Has it stopped arbitrarily dividing ripped cds into two identical albums, or losing the tags on a couple of the tracks? Does it use a database that isn't entirely oriented to US releases?
If so then its certainly a necessary upgrade.

I personally haven't had either program crash on me. Granted, I still use firefox as my primary browser, but sometimes I fire up IE and haven't had any issues.

first thing i do in an OS is install Opera (and/or Firefox and/or Chrome), MPC HC, Winamp 5. only use IE/WMP if someone/something twists my arm and have done so since 2003 or so.

i tooled around with IE8 a weeee bit "since it was a beta" but i missed my mouse gestures and quickly fell back into old habits.

7022 and 7032 have been increasingly more stable. Its amazing how some seem to forget they are running a beta OS and a beta of IE8 and a beta of WMP12 then complain like somehow MS is out to get them...

Then again, this is the same guy that complained about the Vista beta and then Vista for 18 months and wound up posting 6 months ago how he's was running XP and was just thinking of buying Vista. So it's possible he's never even ran W7 at this point.

If you're referring to me, bill, I have Windows 7 64-bit running on two machines, a Q6600/X48 rig and a BE-2400/780G rig. I don't recall complaining about the Vista beta much, I've never run the Vista beta. I certainly am no fan of Vista though.

Edit: I own multiple retail upgrade copies of Vista home basic, and one vista ultimate retail upgrade, but I've not installed any of them. A relative's new laptop came with vista home premium.

I'm certainly not the only person that doesn't like vista, someone I was talking to in RL commented to me about how they dislike Vista, and I didn't prompt that response.

everyone i work with likes vista and doesn't have issues with it. then again, we work in tech support, so we knew what we were getting into.

oh to be polite and/or on topic, i have no issues with webvideo in windows 7... as long as you follow *Adobe's* instructions and use a 32bit browser. doesn't look like Microsoft's fault, per se.

youtube incl hi def video, google video, huhu, and jw player works. and smoothly.

what issues are you having?

edit: OH MAN, the irony of it all! Silverlight doesn't work on ANY browser in Windows 7... (i guess it's good that it is underwhelmingly mediocre and that nobody uses it)

edit2: oh! it works .. if you hunt down the icon for non-64-bit IE (the icon automagically plopped on the bar formerly known as the Quickstart bar is 64-bit)

edit3: queueing up 6 hours of media to test WMP, too. random x264 HD TV show, Soft Subbed Anime, my own encode, HD Transport Stream, Random MPEG4 ASP AVI. may have to loop it for a "thorough test"

I hear the same unprompted comments from people, when I ask them why I always get the same answers... I heard that it sucked, or nothing works... Then I ask them if they ever used Vista and 9 out of 10 times the answer is no. The rest give me examples of problems that have more to do with user errors or bloatware installed by HP, Dell, etc.

quick report: crash during the credits of a downloaded HD transport stream (True Blood 1x01, Xorp). it was hour 6 of the shows i'd queued. i'm requeuing them sans true blood and will run it while at work today...

using CCCP Project latest "stable" release. i guess windows is using its mpeg-2 decoder. (i guess i should try the FFDShow mpeg-2 decoder later)

oddly i can't duplicate it if i skip to the beginning of credits and play it thru. have tried it several times.

maybe if the rest of the files run successfully, i'll disable the ffdshow h.264 decoding and see how windows 7's decoder does. i don't think these h.264 streams are wonky in any way, though. the mpeg2 stream might be if one is to assume the stream is abrubtly cut off at the end opposed to a nice clean last frame and file data (if that's even at the end of the file). i'll see if i can find a test BBC h.264 transport stream.

virtuallarry, maybe put add to the summary of your post that this post is with regards to "issues with" ...IE8 and Media Player 12
