With The Sopranos done and the final season of The Wire, is there any reason to subscribe to HBO?

Curb your Enthusiasm, plus some new show with Gabriel Burns that looks pretty good

Edit: And Entourage, of course

Pacific will be out in 2009, of course it is just a mini-series but I have little doubt that it will be fantastic.

And there is miniseries about the life of John Adams. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0472027/

With the release of DVDs, there hasn't been a good reason for years. They keep canceling shows too, so why invest the time and money for just one or two seasons? I guess there's boxing and cropped HD movies.

Any word on when Season 4 is out on DVD, i've been waiting all summer.

I don't think there is a "cop" show on Tv with a better cast and story than The Wire.

The Shield is definitely better than The Wire, but The Wire is awesome.

I have seen up to Season 3, waiting for S4 to hit dvd.

Was I the only one who thought this one going to be a parody on the thread about a 45 year old marine pretending to be an 18 year old marine and finding an 18 year old girl so on and so forth?

It was from thewire.com so... yeah ^_^*

Not sure yet if it's better than The Shield, but it's a damn good show.

*Much* better than The Shield. Im half way through season 3 ATM. Definitely a show to watch!

Been watching The Wire since the beginning, rumor is S5 isn't coming out until January. Will be sad to see it go and I can't wait to see how they wrap up some story lines but at least it will go out on top unlike Sopranos.

The Wire is approximately ten thousand times better than the shield. It is infinitely more realistic (not only as a cop show - it is also the most realistic portrayal of politics I've seen), the dialogue and acting of supporting actors are a level above the shield (though lead actors in the shield are a bit better), the storylines are tightly written and plotted well in advance (e.g. season 2 is about blue collar workers, season 3 is about reform, season 4 is about education, etc.), it has more thrilling policework, and most of all, it has incredible, deep insight into society as a whole. This last season of the shield was somewhat disappointing compared to the season before. On the other hand, Season 4 of the wire was the most heartbreaking and brilliant season of TV I can recall ever seeing. People who say otherwise are a little too wrapped up in cops and robbers and are missing out on the big picture big time.

I used to manage two apartment complexes in Baltimore.
One of them looked exactly like that lo-rise complex.
It was in the same neighborhood too.

I just blew through Seasons 1-4 of the Wire over the past month or so. I cannot express how shocked I am with 1) How good the show is, and 2) How it gets ignored by both entertainment media and award shows.

Well, you're entitled to your own incorrect opinion. 😉

I think it's very close. My favorite season of The Wire was with the greeks and the union guys.

I love both shows but if i had to choose - I'd probably choose The Wire.

Blasphemy RossMan.....

Have you seen every episode of both shows?

It's hard to choose but I think The Wire has a slight lead over The Shield.

can you find me a deal on the wire dvd's rossman?

Slim Charles from the wire aka Ghengis from the backyard band has been in the news here in DC recently. Turns out his brother was murdered a few days ago. 🙁
