The Vatican and Irish reform schools...

Disgusting news from the Emerald Isle. Were I a betting man I'd wage that a similar history has taken place in Poland.

Again the Vatican shows us all why we should ignore it what it thinks. I can't believe people still defend this org.

Will this amount to anything, ever, or will money just be thrown at the problem like it has in the past?

Nine years in the making, Wednesday's 2,600-page report sides almost completely with the horrific reports of abuse from former students sent to more than 250 church-run, mostly residential institutions. It concluded that church officials always shielded their orders' pedophiles from arrest to protect their own reputations and, according to documents uncovered in the Vatican, knew that many pedophiles were serial attackers.

More than 30,000 children deemed to be petty thieves, truants or from dysfunctional families ? a category that often included unmarried mothers ? were sent to Ireland's austere network of industrial schools, reformatories, orphanages and hostels from the 1930s until the last church-run facilities shut in the 1990s. The report, unveiled by High Court Justice Sean Ryan, found that molestation and rape were "endemic" in boys' facilities, chiefly run by the Christian Brothers order, and supervisors pursued policies that increased the danger. Girls supervised by orders of nuns, chiefly the Sisters of Mercy, suffered much less sexual abuse but frequent assaults and humiliation designed to make them feel worthless. "In some schools a high level of ritualized beating was routine. ... Girls were struck with implements designed to maximize pain and were struck on all parts of the body," the report said. "Personal and family denigration was widespread."

"The management did not listen to or believe children when they complained of the activities of some of the men who had responsibility for their care," the commission found. "At best, the abusers were moved, but nothing was done about the harm done to the child. At worst, the child was blamed and seen as corrupted by the sexual activity, and was punished severely."

Yep, just more bad apples I guess... :|

Sounds like some stories out of the mountains of Pakistan. If there is a hell, I'm sure these sick priests and nuns will provide it with ample fuel. :|

This is why the Boy Scouts are wise to not allow homosexual adults oversee the kids. The Catholics absolutely deserve criticism for keeping abusers in their ranks but its also true these people are homosexuals. The media looooves anything they can use to smear the church while always skipping the nature of the abusers themselves.

Under attack again in San Diego.

Remember kids, gay marriage is immoral, and you know that because the morality police at the church have told you so.

Given that the Catholic Church is almost entirely a vehicle used to amass wealth and power that has never played by the rules that it demands it's membership obey I can't say I'm really surprised.

This is highly offensive to me, cause you don't have to travel to Pakistan to see abuse of children and other vulnerable people.

So that's what Ireland has in common with Los Angeles, Boston and a lot of other American cities. It's been going on, here, for years. 🙁

I guess it's nothing that money can't fix... as long as you've got enough suckers... err... believers willing to continue contributing.

Catholic sex abuse cases
.
.
Compensation payouts
  • January 15, 2007 Diocese of Charleston Bishop Robert J. Baker agreed to pay $12 million to settle numerous cases concerning abuse by priests.
  • In December 2006 the Archdiocese of Los Angeles (its archbishop was Roger Cardinal Mahony) agreed to a payout of $60 million to settle 45 of the over 500 pending cases concerning abuse by priests.[75] In July 2007 the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles agreed to pay a $660 million settlement to hundreds of people who claimed to have been abused by clergy.
  • In September 2003 the Archdiocese of Boston agreed to pay out $85 million to 552 victims.
  • In 1997 the Diocese of Dallas negotiated a $31 million settlement with victims.
  • In June 2003 the Archdiocese of Louisville made a $25.7 million settlement involving 240 victims of sexual abuse.
  • On January 3, 2005 Bishop Tod Brown of the Diocese of Orange apologized to 87 alleged victims of sexual abuse and announced a settlement of $100 million following two years of mediation.
  • In December 2006 the Diocese of Phoenix agreed to pay $100,000 to William Cesolini, who claimed he was sexually assaulted as a teenager by a priest.
  • In Canada the Christian Brothers have paid out approximately $35 million (Canadian) in compensation.
  • In May 1994 the Diocese of Lincoln (Nebraska) agreed to pay Rob Butler, FKA Adam Butler, $40,000 after he claimed he was abused weekly for two years.

Religion is one thing. Abusing the power inherent in leading a religion is quite another. :|

That's a bigoted crock of shit! All gays are not pedophiles, and all pedophiles are not gay.

The larger crime is the massive abuse of the power of faith to cover up these crimes.

The Magdalene Sisters details the type of abuse that happened in these places. It's a brutal movie, but pretty eye opening.

Gee, that's too bad.

But actually, it was my last quote provided in the OP (specific parts in bold) that I was likening to treatment of victims in Pakistan.

Made me recall the treatment some rape victims get in the mountainous regions.

Releasing the photos will serve no purpose. It will only inflame the opponents of the Church. Therefore, they should be censored.

That's a pretty good general rule. Whenever any wrong happens, any evidence of it that might inflame opponents is ok to censor. We just can't have the truth carry any price.

These priests are not all homosexuals you dolt. The majority of them are straight, but have a psychological disorder most likely brought on because of celibacy.

You are so ignorant and uneducated...where do I begin?

Firstly, there are perfectly straight men that engage in homosexuality. Take those popular airport restrooms you hear about on the news. The majority of men that go there to have these random hookups with other men are usually married. They have a need to fulfill, but are forced to do it in secrecy because society doesn't allow it. Now this is probably not computing with your incompetent mind, but it makes sense since the majority of mammals in the animal kingdom participate in homosexuality . All this considered, its not really surprising that the Romans, Republican fundie hypocrites (Ted Haggard, Larry Craig, Mark Foley), and frat boys (there have been many cases in which a straight member has used the date rape drug on another within the frat to engage in gay sex against there will.) all engage in homosexuality despite being straight.

You really just need to stop believing that all child molesters are homosexual...makes you sound like a fucking idiot.

The terms "homosexual" and "paedophile" are not synonyms. You are an ass. Please do not detract from the suffering that took place in my country with further demonstrations of your bigotry.

The catholic church, yet again, must bow its head in shame.

I see. If a priest is heterosexual and molests a girl, it's ok? I thought a priest took a vow of celibacy. Last time I checked, that means no sex of any kind or persuasion.

So you support a full frontal assault on Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. She's the new face of your oppressors? Stupid doesn't begin to describe this.

This fringe group mounting the attack smells. They:

Oppose abortions
Oppose same-sex marriage
Oppose restrictions on firearms
Oppose lax immigration
Oppose the policies of President Obama regarding immigration, citizenship, and the expansion of social programs
Oppose continuation of free trade agreements
Are suspect of foreign regimes
Fear Communist regimes
Oppose a ?one world? government
Bemoan the decline of U.S. stature in the world
Are upset with loss of U.S. manufacturing jobs to China and India
. . . and the list goes on.
It's a lot of recycled stuff with some new additions. You must see boogeymen everywhere.

Sorry, that was mean on my part. Here's a towel to clean yourself with.

"We" can do little, the responsibility lies with the catholic church, which seems more concerned with protecting its image rather than the victims of child abuse.

 Cut it out, really? Pedophelia is not equivilent to homosexuality, you can't even connect the two.

The media looooves anything they can use to smear the church while always skipping the nature of the abusers themselves.

Who needs to smear the church? They're doing a great job of ruining their own image by coveting pedos.

Therefore the Bible is fallible. Fallible men wrote it.

Your logic fails. A fallible man also wrote the Pythagorean theorem (a^2+b^2=c^2), but no one's proven that one wrong, at least to my knowledge.

The Pythagorean theorem can be tested by anybody, and the results are always consistent. You can't say the same for the bible.

That wasn't the structure of your original argument. You argued the Bible was fallible because it came from fallible men. I merely demonstrated your lack of logic by citing an infallible theorom which came from fallible men.
