Odds are, I'll end up buying this board.

However, there are some reports that its SB gets fairly hot, because there is no HS on it at all. I've been following this thread on and off, but I don't want to read through 20 some pages to find an answer to this question if its already been posted. Is a simple heatsink attached with a thermal adhesive enough to effectively cool the SB, such as the NB32x line from Zalman?

I've also got some rather large OCZ BGA RAMsinks lying around that I could stick on the SB as well, though the thermal adhesive on those is terrible. I do have some AS epoxy available though.

Nice. I've been running an XP and Vista dual boot for a few weeks now. I really like Vista and have had no compatibility issues.

How's the speed compared to xp and bench marks

In terms of daily use it feels a lot faster to me with opening windows, moving between programs. I don't game so thats no issue to me but I've heard games run slower. I haven't done any benchmarks in it.

Why we had to read them.
Honestly the SB doesn't need much.
A couple pages back there was a perfect solution that would take care of both the NB and SB (its not 20 pages)
Edit: Here it is COOLER MASTER SLC-S41-U1 Copper Fan&Heatsinks

ive said it a few times that an el cheapo heatsink is just fine for the SB with thermal tape - i have one like that from jab-tech. if you want to use as5 just get the el-cheapo zalman that is gold color and uses push pins.

Would you please give Ryan a few tips on how to install it right.
He's going to spend weeks trying to get xp back

Well, I am going to give it a try. Picked up a 6600 and 2GB of Mushkin to go with it. Plus, I am going to try the Freezer 7 several here have suggested.

Good choices Rytr well have to have a orthos heat contest between the Scythe"s vs Freezer7's

i think i've got it. modifying the boot.ini now. apprently the partition got hidden somehow so vista didn't do what it was supposed to. xp still uses ntldr and boot.ini but Vista has it's own loader.

You don't need much of a heat sink on the southbridge. A couple of RAM HS would work fine. Or even a 2.00 heatsink from a local computer shop. If youy do get one make sure that it will not give you problems with the PCIEx VGA card. Some cards are long and the position of the SB is directly behind the slot.

I know one thing you have to make sure is that both XP and Vista are on Primary partitions. If not the dual boot won't work right. I use partition magic to set them both as primary. Otherwise it was as simple as installing Vista for me and it setup the dual boot perfectly.

I've taken the plunge today after reading through this thread for the last few weeks. Clubit.com for 138$ shipped.

Now my problem is whether to wait for the e4xxx to become widely available or pick up an e6300 or e6400 now. Does anyone have any ideas when the e4xxx's are gonna be available??

ZIP ZOOM FLY has them for a few bucks cheaper than the e6300.
Better off going with a e6400.

Received my board today along with an E4300, 7900GS, 2gb of DDR2/800, and miscellaneous cooling apparati. Sat down and got it all together.

1) Tried to boot off an IDE hard drive (Seagate 7200.10) that had an installation of Vista RTM from my previous machine. Starts, but then reboots quickly in the boot process. Safe mode wouldn't boot either.

2) Booted XP install CD, dropped it on the vista partition (formatted it first). Install went smooth up until first installation reboot. At the "press any key to boot from cd..." message I let it run down to boot off the HD, but instead of booting it throws up a few odd ASCII characters on the screen and freezes... this is reproducable every time. Even the odd ASCII characters are the same everytime.

3) Rebooted without the CD in the drive. Pauses with a flashing cursor in the upper left of the screen. I read on the Asus forums about someone who had this same problem, but there were no replies or followup. That guy had this problem back on 12/30, so it couldn't be the E4300 that is fouling me up.

I'm disinclined to blame the powersupply since it's a new Seasonic S12. Although it's only kicking out 430w, that should be plenty to power this system. Plus, I was able to begin the windows installation on the HD.

So, just what the heck is going on?! Something here is broken, and I'm pointing at the motherboard. I was able to run Memtest86 for awhile. My board even booted it up with memory timings at 4-4-3-8-1T. Though I did get a few errors that suggest my memory isn't meant for 1T at those timings. I'll keep playing around with things here. I've got another power supply that I could use to power half the system to see if that helps. But I think it's the motherboard...

from what ive read in this thread, no 1 thing to do is a. put the ram ib the black slots and b. get the mem timings to 2t have you tried that?

RAM in black slots, timings at 2T. Did that from the get go.

Windows partially installed, but it won't boot off the HD after the first reboot during installtion.

One thing I've noticed is that the heat sink compound on the north bridge is brittle and dry. If you happen to tilt the heatsink (too easy to do), you're going to need to reapply it. I've got a tube of MX-1, but since that stuff drys out, I've used normal compound instead so that incase it gets bumped again it will reseal.

Been waiting to see if anything would pop up here about my drive not booting, also searching other forums.

Not SATA, it's IDE. I swapped ports and cables, no change. I've disabled all the SATA ports and the printer and serial ports, no change. I disabled IDE DMA and prefetch mode, no change.

After post, tt just flashes a white cursor without booting off the drive. Insert the XP installation CD, and after the "hit any key" thing times out, it tosses up several colorful ASCII characters on the screen and freezes.

How are your jumper pins configured on the ide drives hd cd etc. Make your hd the 1st boot up options in the bios. Don't worry we'll get you up and running. Alot of good people here. I done alot of posts over at the Asus forum. I'll go and check a few

Doesn't matter if it's master or C/S; no boot. I've tried the HD as first boot device, no change.

I also pulled out another power supply and had ~900 watts going to the box, no change. Might try to install on another drive, or perhaps hooking up two drives on the primary bus might make it happy.

Do you have an Sata drive. Recheck your cables and connections. Disable the JMicron controller too in the bios

I had a similar problem would not boot from a sata drive. I ended reformatting it with WD Life Tools and NOT Windows and then it worked fine.
