I tell you what... I only ever gave FB one of my email addresses but a while back I went in and it had about five of them listed. :colbert:

This, they cross reference a lot, both with tracking cookies, data mining, and simply pulling the public data from your friends profiles because they didn't bother to secure them.

I've used at least 10 different e-mail addresses on this computer while signed into facebook and it still only lists the one I provided. Must be something you're doing.

So because the *gasp* Russians invested in Facebook this is now a problem? Give me a fucking break. Facebook isn't about to turn over their data to an investor, if anyone is going to abuse it to make money, it's Facebook themselves who have no qualms about using your demographic data, your work history, or your interests to sell ads at you.

Goldman and a Russian company investing in Facebook doesn't suddenly make us more vulnerable to cyber warfare.

You can wish and believe what you want, but I'm telling you what I know. You don't see what I see trying to spam the forums 24/7, every day, from Russia. They're not the only ones in the game, but they are among the worst, both for volume and content.

It's data farming. I may have used the other addresses while registering domains or other things, if they come up with my name in a few places and match my sign-up email, they add it. It's nothing new but until that happened I wasn't aware that they played that game.

The strength of FB isn't just the information you freely give to them. It's also the information provided by your connections (friends). If you didn't tell FB about something, one of your friends might have told them. So if FB needed to know something they have a good list of people to look through.

So somewhere in my friend profiles is written personal information about me, that's directly linked to my profile?

What the hell are you smoking?

:hmm:

I don't have a FB or Groupon account. However, my fiancee uses both. 😱

I never did like Facebook, Myspace or any of those other social networking sites. Don't understand them or see the point. Though I do feel Facebook will be around for a long time doesn't mean I will use it though.

So your theory is that everyone is Russia is a spammer?

No way. I talked to many Russians before while gaming and there not at all like that. It is just like with any country everyone has their scammers. I wouldn't mine visiting Russia. Will I make it on the top of my list? No. Though if I am going to visit the whole world I have to visit every country of course.

If a friend said you were at a party and you got wasted or posted picture, you don't think it's associated with you somehow?

You (Alone) have to know that their info and your info is referenced in some way and correlations drawn. Right? It's pretty easy to get a ton of information about anybody these days, just ask our local PI's.

Then why is Facebook itself a huge problem? It's not any different than being involved with any sort of community with an online presence. If it was this huge privacy risk my employers (Department of National Defense) would not allow us to have accounts.

No, I agree. The problem is people share too much and don't know that friends doing things opens your information up too.

If you do anything that requires your name to be recorded in some way there is going to be a trail and things will link up. This isn't a FB thing at all, but I was stating that they do this type of thing and it's not good for membership/participation reasons.

This is the least startling thing Facebook has gotten in bed with within the last year or two.

I for one welcome our Soviet overlords!

The Time To Get Off Of Facebook Is Now

Facebook has caught a lot of media attention and raised a lot of questions about their security and privacy policies. I don't have a facebook page, and now, I'm glad I don't. As of today, whatever you thought about those issues may be about to get much worse -- enough so that you may want to dump yours and clear out as much of your personal info as possible.

As an AT Senior Mod/Admin, I'm one of those who spends a lot of my forum time stomping spammers. What has motivated me to post this is that, today, Facebook got a major infusion of cash from Golman Sachs and a company called, Digital Sky Technologies, a major investment firm from one of the major sources of e-mail and forum spam, porn and malware, Russia!

I don't know whether this will bother anyone or makes you re-think whether you want to continue on Facebook, but I thought our members should at least be aware of this.

All of the Corporations own the Internet.

It's just a matter of time before it just stops working.

It will only work to a point for those with enough money to pay for services that these Corporations want you to pay for.

Everybody knows this

i was amazed on the amount of personal info people put in their fb accounts.

i only use my 1st name/1st initial last name.

unfortunately the email addr is the same one i use for shopping. so they can datamine and find out who i am 🙁

on the plus side, yahoo spam filter is surprisingly good.

not only that, but many of the scams originating from eastern Europe are perpetuated by Russians. Many other countries get blamed for this shit, some rather famously, but if you actually look into the stories, the vast majority of these assclowns are actually Russians.

just saying...

Facebook is a great tool when hiring someone. Check out their page and see what kind of a douchebag the person is and what kind of degenerates their circle revolves around...

Take three people with similar resumes...one has a FB pictures of drunken people lying in vomit another is full of pictures of their cats and the third has no profile at all..

who would you hire?

forgot to mention kids.....how many underage kids get asked how old they are in chat daily?

What the three do on their time is no business of that Company.

The place for that sort of thing is China, you should move there immediately.

There is nothing about me available on Facebook that wasn't available from the white pages of a telephone book before facebook existed. If they want to spam a gmail address let them have fun, that is what it is for.

Oh, wait, all the information I've made available on Facebook is available just about everywhere else, too, including a phone book or other public record.
Your phone book owns your photos, tracks your status, all your friends, relatives and relationships, scans your updates and combines all this information to sell to marketing firms?

And here I thought all it did was list outdated addresses and land line phone numbers.
