Cooool... no one has those oh so popular disc brakes... :p makes me feel ok... :D

I contacted Serotta to ask what it would cost to add disc brake bosses to my bike, and they said it would require an entire new rear triangle, at a cost of $1500. I think I will stick to V-brakes for the time being . . .

Daumn!

Bummer Dude!

Yeah, Serotta make brilliant bikes IMO, but they definitely maintain a pricing structure that doesn't let you forget they are a premium brand. Actually it's an interesting contrast with Moots, who built my road bike. I asked them what it would cost to add a pump peg to my frame and they said $40 - I would bet my eyeteeth that Serotta would charge a minimum of $200. In spite of Moots' working-class ethic, I tend to think my Moots is the better-built of the two bikes, albeit by a small margin. Their welder appears not to breathe, and the welds are just amazing.

Still, I wish I could afford a custom-painted Serotta Ottrott ST with full Dura-Ace 10-speed like Senator Kerry. For any non-bike geeks, that is a $7-8000 bicycle. Apparenly he also has a Colorado III with Campy.

Does he have such a serious bike because he is that skilled and dedicated to riding? Or did Serotta give him one because he is Kerry?

I'm sure he bought it - they are not in the business of giving bikes to very wealthy politicians (though I know they have given some to police departments). Apparently he really likes the orange/yellow combo, and had the bike and his Giro helmet custom-painted.

I have no idea how serious a cyclist he is, but he does ride. This story was published a coupla weeks ago:

CONCORD, Mass. (AP) ? Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry took a spill from his bicycle while riding Sunday afternoon but was not injured, a campaign official said.
Kerry was riding with Secret Service agents through Concord, about 18 miles north of Boston, when his bike hit a patch of sand and he fell, campaign officials said.
??He?s fine. They took the bike into the bike shop and he went home,?? said campaign spokesman Michael Meehan.

i read that Kerry brings his bike wherever he goes... and tries to ride it whenever he can despite all his time being consumed by campaigning.

there was a thread at the bikeforums where a secret service agent walked in to a bike store to check things out... then kerry came in... and took a look around... pretty cool guy... :D

Depends if you going X country or down hill.
X country, you hump up the hill.
Down hill you usually shuttle the bikes to the top and leave one car at the bottom for the drive back to pick up the drop off car.

I actually hate hills and am scared of them. When you go up hill, it's painful because you get tired. But at least it's safe.

Then the scary part comes. Going downhill you go so fast, even if you don't pedal. Of course I slow myself down so I hit the brakes every 20 seconds or so, so that I don't build up too much speed. The downside to this of course is you wear down your brake pads really fast.

I am not sure how people do it. I go down maybe 3-4 blocks and get scared. Imagine going down 7 miles or so of a fire road.

It's FUN, and I have yet to get hurt so bad I wasn't able to laugh at myself for doing the stupid thing I did to cause me to crash in the first place!

Yup, going downhill on my road bike can get scary. 40 mph.
The pads are melting.

Right now my problem is that I get bored when it's flat or downhill. I've switched to a route that has a couple of long climbs in it at least, which also has the advantage that there are a lot fewer cyclists and pedestrians than there are on the non-sloping route.

Here's mine
and anothet shot of the side

Yeah, I don't understand how people can ride on nearly horizontal saddles (like most of the ones I see). This bike has a less vertical seat tube than my previous bicycle and I had to go through my entire collection of extra-long seatposts to find one that I could set at a reasonable angle (and then only by taking off two of the pieces and putting them on backwards).

Hrm ... the only real pic I have of mine is this one ... I'll have to take more!

Maybe today when I pick it up from home during lunch.

I've thought about getting a road bike, but if people honked and yelled at me, I wouldn't be able to contain myself from destroying them.
