This is exactly what I was hoping to see from MS, and why I have been waiting to picking up a 360. Excellent news.

i've always wondered why they don't use a standard hard drive on the 360.
why do you have to buy a microsoft hard drive?
I mean, for the ps3 you can just pick up any cheap 2.5" SATA drive on newegg and pop it in.
what's so special about the 360 drives?
same question about the microsoft wireless adaptor and the microsoft headset, but that's another story
If you could use any old drive, they wouldn't get anything from the sale of them.

Ah yes, feed a digital input an analog signal. It's so simple. Why didn't I think of that?Originally posted by: Aikouka

Well, I'll admit I'm a little disappointed since this seems to indicate there's no way to get HDMI from my current 360. I have a 1080p TV that doesn't have VGA so I have to watch HD-DVD in 1080i. My launch 360 has worked flawlessly so there's absolutely no reason for me to want to replace it.
VGA->DVI->HDMI

I don't think Microsoft is stupid enough to do this.

What's stupid about releasing a:
cooler running processor: to stop the lockups and red rings of death
a larger hard drive: to better compete with the 60GB PS3 and to hold more downloads from Microsoft's Xbox Live movie/TV download service
HDMI port: to support 1080p without firmware trickery
It makes perfect sense, DUH! That coupled with the fact that Microsoft has been able to cut costs dramatically on producing the Xbox 360 make the timing perfect.

I trust Engadget and they are usually spot-on with things like this.
I believe it and I will be replacing my Xbox with a new one when they come out. I could really use the HDMI port as well as the 120GB HD.

It makes sense cause MS stated that they were not going to release a version of the 360 w/HDMI capabilities and leave the people who already purchased it in the dust.
Aside from this picture being on engadget, the post has absolutely no credibility. And nowhere in that picture does it suggest a bigger 120gb HDD is included. That was just another thing added to this article.
Also, if you are using HDMI, where the hell does the optical audio cable go? I would think there would be some sort of output on the back of the 360 ... but there isn't. What, will they make yet another 4th version of the 360 that supports the optical output?
Again I truly think this is BS, especially considering HDMI prototypes have been out there for a long time, and these are probably some pictures that just finally surfaced.

Last time I checked, an HDMI cable carried audio and video.
Secondly, I don't feel like checking my Xbox 360 right now, but I do believe the the optical output is built-in to the cable that plugs into the connector above the HDMI port.

I don't think I've ever seen a TV that didn't have a digital output. So you run HDMI to your TV and your TV passes the audio out the digital output to your receiver.Originally posted by: purbeast0

I'm not talking about audio that goes to your TV ... i'm talking about the optical audio cable that hooks to your receiver to get the 5.1 sound out of your xbox360.
And yes, the cable that plugs into your TV right now (the HDAV pack) has a spot on the back of it that allows you to plug the optical cable into it. I have mine plugged into it.
Does this mean that the user now has to have 2 video cables plugged into the back of their xbox360 in order to use an optical output? That would be a horrible design decision.
Again, I'm sticking with my feeling that this is not real and it's just one of the prototype ones that have been around for a while. But with the MS show in the near future, I could be proven wrong.

again you completely missed my point. i said the optical audio output, the one that goes to your receiver to get the 5.1 sound.

Why would you need two? If it carried the same design as now, the HDMI port would in fact be the same as the port is now, where the 5.1 comes off the back of the connector. Thus, the hdmi goes into your video port into the TV and the 5.1 surround sound comes off the back of the HDMI connector in the 360, as it does now with the RBG connector.
