I like my computer and I own a gamecube. I believe that every system has its good sides and bad sides. I don't see why people argue about it all the time...

what matters is that gamers are aging. xbox and ps2 games excite me now far more then gamecube games do. gamecube seems marketed towards little boys, a market that nintendo does well in of course. i had nothing but nintendo consoles when i was little, but they began to lose me with n64.

True enough. I hope Nintendo doesn't end up like Sega making all the best games for their system themselves. But it looks like the partnerships formed with Capcom and Square to make exclusive games will definitely pay off.

The PS2 is hideous piece of sh!t. No power button on the front? WTF were they smoking? They expect you to shell out more cash in order to have a front power button. Aesthetically, I'll take my Gambecube over my buddies PS2 any day.

The only thing the PS2 has going for it is GTA:Vice City.

Because the Japanese are notoriously loyal to domestic companies, especially with electronics. Microsoft's decision to even market the xbox in japan could not be seen as anything other than a major blunder.

really late reply, but what do you think about what happened to Dreamcast, and N64? they both got creamed, where's the national support for those consoles, or does it only matter if a foreign co is involved? that seemed like an extremely near sighted comment, seeing as i'm sure even in japan, if you come up w/ crappy console, you'll lose, national loyalty or not.

i'm sure horny japanese hornballs (like american counterparts) will buy DOAXBV inspite of their national loyality. funny ass commerical btw.

My store recieved the discs LAST saturday. We're not supposed to give them out, but since other f'n idiots (ahem, walmart, target, ect..) started handing them out, we now have to. YMMV as it is up to the store manager to give out the discs. Nintendo has already confirmed to us that they plan to ship additional quantities of the disc so there shouldn't be any shortage.

The entire console war is based around the style of games that people like. In the Japanese market, they LOVE role playing (sigh...), thus we see games like Final Fantasy (series), Dragon Warrior, and the now popular Pokemon GBA games. They live that stuff over there.

We Americans, on the other hand, crave the adrenaline lined destruction of first person shooters and action adventures. Some of it is good, some of it is REAL bad. Gaming here is still a hobby, whereas around the world its seen as more of a social activity.

The Gamecube isn't doing well, but it isn't doing bad either. I still play both my Xbox and PC MUCH more than it, but its a solid system regardless. Its a much better gaming system than the PS2.

It's small, compact, and cleanly layed out. Everyone talks about how Nintendo appeals mostly to little kids and that the main video game market wants a more "mature" game base. I say, Nintendo is easily the most mature gaming system there is. Not in that it contains blood and guts games, rather, for the lack thereof. Turn on the TV to your favorite sitcom where a young adult or some dorky adults are playing video games. They brag about the awesome effect they get when they blow a guy's head off. Notice that also, the main video game players are males. Getting the picture now? Gamers want gratuitously and realistically violent games because it appeals to their testosterone rush, not necessarily anything about "mature" tastes. It's the same principle behind Playboys. Real men with girlfriends don't need them. On the other hand, little kids and losers *coughcough* dream of getting their hands on one (or at least have found the internet, which must be really hurting Playboy's income). Nintendo doesn't really pander to that level, they design games people are genuinely interested in because they're genuinely interesting, quite a concept. While people talk about that cool "juggle" move in an only fairly decent game like Devil May Cry 2, the original titles produced for the Gamecube get largely overlooked. Appealing to base desires has never made anything "adult" in my opinion.

Well said...

??? The design is great, and it is small too.
The only console that is failing is the X-Box - I bet MS will abandon the console market soon. Even they cant cope with such high losses on the long run...

no, just a fanboy who doesn't know what the hell hes talking about rambling on about things he shouldn't.

Fanboy of what? I don't have any consoles.

Then how exactly have you formed the opinion that it has failed?

I asked before. What constitutes success to you? If it was all black with an all black controller and had the same sales #'s, would you still deem it a failure?

Success is not having your rival sell units twice as quickly. Small market share may be enough to get by.. but look what happened to Sega.

Do all those extra console says corellate to more software sales? I'd like to see those numbers.

Every time I hear the tired old 'GameCube is for kids' story it makes me want to chop my ears off and fill the bloody, jagged holes with Cement.

If, by 'Mature Game', you mean any game with exploding brains and total destruction of the local area, then you cannot call yourself a gamer. I shall elaborate:

Games are a virtual medium. The purpose it to divert your attention whilst stimulating your mind. The obsession with simulating real life situations, although I too enjoy this type of game to a point, seems to be only to explore the possibilities of the technology. A game can excel and amuse and have no bearing on reality whatsoever, Tetris for example.

For example, one of my favorite games is Super Monkey Ball. Nobody dies, no blood, no maiming. Just pure 'gameplay', not a 'cool effect' or 'loads of blood'. After you have seen a cool effect or the 2000th pool of enemy blood, the game is going to get pretty shallow pretty fast, unless the gameplay is there to back it up.

When I was 13-14, all I wanted was to see an '18' rated movie. It was seen as cool to me and my peer group. I wouldn't have gone to see a 'PG' or 'U' rated film for fear of being called a 'kid' or 'a baby'. This as I see it also fuels the desire for many to shun excellent games for fear of name calling.

The older players who are quite at ease with themselves on the issue of maturity can see a game for what it is; either a good or bad game. The maturity level is rarely a factor in the decision to buy.

Just my 2 peneth.

The Xbox is absolutely raping the Gamecube in sales. In the U.S., 2-1. In Europe, 3-1. In Canada, 4-1. In Australia, 10-1. The Gamecube outsells the Xbox in Japan, but not nearly enough to compensate for it's failure elsewhere.

just bought a Gamecube tonight. This is my first "next generation" console and will supplant my Dreamcast. I bought the N64 the day it came out and I was very happy with that system. Granted, it didn't have the huge library of the PS1 but come on: Super Mario64, Zelda: Ocarina, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Wave Race, Banjo-Kazooie, Conker's...if those were the only games ever released I would have still been satisfied. How could anyone call themselves a gamer and never play Zelda: Ocarina Of Time? I'd buy the N64 just for that game.

Half of those franchises are owned by Rare, which is now part of Microsoft. Banjo Kazooie, Conker's, and Perfect Dark sequels are all coming out on Xbox this year.

Gonna have to be leary of your numbers unless you provide some sources. Yes, in those areas GC is being outsold, but 3:1 in Europe sounds a bit...how should i say...inflated for effect...and Japan is a huge market btw.

Add that to the fact that Nintendo actually makes profit off each sale. Plus recent XBox numbers were with the 2 game giveaway, GC just started their giveaway, we'll see how they fare.

Rare doesn't own GoldenEye btw; most of their team from GoldenEye split away from Rare to form Free Radical. Timesplitters 2 is pretty sweet as hell (available for all consoles). Not sure how MS screwed up Joanna Dark though..she was such a cool character and now she looks like she's 12.

Holy $h!t. A Conker's sequel?

Dammit, now I've gotta go buy an XBox. Hmm ... I'll pawn this expensive purple lunchbox beside my TV ... :D

I don't get everyone's infatuation with ripping apart the design of the GameCube...especially in reference to the XBox. Here's two systems which are essentially equally powerful (XBox has some advantages, GC has some) yet the GC is about 3 times as small and hella lighter..MS could have easily designed a better "PC in a console" form factor that would have actually allowed it to be small. I mean my server Shuttle SV24 is essentially smaller then the XBox...

I find it so strange that people rip on GC's design. Its a very small near cube shape that weighs hardly nothing. Plus, its in 3 colors (currently), so there goes the whole purple argument.

Just amazes me that people don't like the simplicity and size of the design.

These are my thoughts exactly after owning a PS/2 for about a month and a half. I played Vice City and nothing else, even though I had five other games. I since have sold the PS/2 and haven't looked back. Xbox and Gamecube makes a very nice combo.
---------------------

Gamecube games are just plain fun. They don't try to recreate reality. They are all about gameplay. I can play Super Monkey Ball or Super Mario Sunshine for a couple of hours and it is just good clean fun. I use the Xbox for my sports and Splinter Cell, Mech Assault etc. I have about a dozen games for each console, and would say there are more quality Nintendo available than for Xbox.

As for maturity, Nintendo has exclusives such as Eternal Darkness, Metroid Prime and the Resident Evil games for mature audiences. They also have Bloodrayne, Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell (coming), and many other cross platform titles.

One thing I believe Nintendo needs to get going and make sure they do it right is online play. It is bordering on ridiculous the lack of use of the broadband and modem adapters that they sell.

One thing that may come back to haunt Xbox is the ability to mod it. Of course this has helped hardware sales because there are people who have one or more xboxes that they toy around with. What good is selling a Xbox at a $100 loss if the buyer never intends on purchasing a game? I have even thought of buying a Xbox in order to toy around with it as a divx or mp3 server. That right there would make it appear that I favor the Xbox 2 to 1.

"Whether it failed, is failing, or just selling slowly is not the point. The point is that people are stupid and driven immensly by marketing. "

Umm, you don't like the color blue and you like sharp edges.

This means people are stupid ?
