I've been holding out for an iPod Touch, but now the question is to save $50 and get the 3rd gen model or is there enough in the 4th gen to justify the difference.

1st gen vs 2nd gen = not much diff... faster 2nd gen, better battery
2nd gen vs 3rd gen = not much diff... faster 3rd gen to match the 3GS

4th gen = revolutionary with the facetime and camera. i think this is what we were waiting for in the 3rd gen all along.

it's definitely worth buying this time. I was all excited for the 3rd gen and sold my IPTv1 for it weeks before the launch... but it turned out it was worth waiting another year for this one.

Great, now I have to wait for Amazon to carry them so I can avoid the nearly $30 in tax on the 64GB model.

I think they should axe the shuffle next. At first it was all about form factor and price. That was when the Nanon ran for like $199 or something. Now it's come down in size and price. The shuffle is now a joke.

I'm actually surprised the Shuffle ran for so long. You could get any other player and get at least a damn display to pick what you're playing for that price range. Why bother? I guess the sheeple really do buy in these things.

It's also interesting to see the iPod Touch get a $30 price boost back to its Gen 2 pricing. I guess part of this is to keep it a high end device because quite honestly, I think they could axe the whole iPod line and just leave the Touch and still make plenty of money.

I plan on buying one of the last gen iPod Shuffles because of how small it is... It would be perfect for 5 - 8 mil runs

I think the AppleTV is actually a game changer. I know it seems so-so at first glance, but I think that the price of the unit, the ubiquity of the iTunes model, and the ease of use could do for TV content what the iPod/iTunes did for music.

The TV rental model seems ideal to me. I hate paying $90/month for cable so that I can watch 10 of the 300 channels that I get. I'd much rather pay for the content I want and discard the rest of it. I think as more and more people contemplate getting rid of cable and replacing it with iTunes/netflix/etc I think that the content providers will get on-board and make it a very viable platform.

I think the point is that such a huge audience is comfortable with the iTunes concept. The WDTV caters to a market like Anandtech members. Where the AppleTV caters to a much broader audience.

No question the new ATV isn't the most powerful device out there, but I think the mass market appeal of Apple will mean a lot more users (compared to Popcorn Hour, WDTV, Roku, etc) and thus the content producers/providers will take notice and make provide more content making this a viable platform.

$1 per episode is complete failure though. This is to watch it once... ONCE. It's not $1 to buy each episode like a iTunes song. This is for 22mins of The Office. Then you're done. Want to re-watch it later (many MANY people do) and that'd be another $1. You realize how much TV most Americans watch? Those $1 charges add up suuuuper fast.

So no bigger size on the iPod Touch? That is the only thing Apple I care about. 64GB is not enough. :(

FWIW it seems that the ONLY PMP larger then 64 GB now is the the iPod Classic. Which really annoys the fuck outta me because i want a new large MP3 player but i refuse to use iTunes and hate the ipods interface and wheel

I am pretty sure that Archos made a 160GB player.

KT, the largest capacity single NAND chips out (that I am aware of) is 32GB. The iPod Touch has room for 2 NAND chips. Once 64GB NAND chips come out, then the iPod Touch will increase in storage accordingly.

They should have put the lowest version at 16 GB for the $229 price point. And of course, the still camera is a huge disappointment. I mean, seriously?

I was really looking forward for this next generation of iPod Touch and was going to get it right away for my wife's late birthday present. After the event was done I told her excitedly how cool the new Touch is and the new features that it's got, and the very first thing she asked me is "how good is the camera?". I realized that I didn't know the exact answer so I checked, and I immediately went :'(

This sucks.

It works for me. My wife and I might spend $20 a month vs. my current ridiculous cable bill.

Well, the other thing that's wrong is that it's only abc and Fox. I watch a lot of Fox, but I also watch a lot of CBS, NBC, USA and a couple shows on SyFy.. so I hope that this expands quickly. Right now I'll stick to Hulu/Netflix on my Media Box.

i dont know why most people are bitching about the camera. your cell phone is most likely going to take better pictures anyway. and if you have a crappy phone camera you should probably upgrade anyway.

Yep, agree with all of this. Very annoying.

Hmm, I don't pay close attention to those things, but I thought they were already out. Guess I'll have to keep waiting. :colbert:

If you watch 20 network TV shows per month, get a pair of rabbit ears.

I watch sports, news and whatever else that seems randomly interesting that is on.

My kids watch Disney, Nick et al.

My wife is the only one who watches primetime TV shows, including Dancing w/Stars, Am. Idol and Bachelor/ette.

Maybe it is just that way we watch TV, but I cannot see using AppleTV, Hulu, Netflix or any of that stuff.

I was waiting to get a Touch for my daughter, I am glad I did. We will have to go demo it soon so we can make the final decision.

Not that it's any different but Amazon just did the same thing... sort of. They're offering $0.99 episode streams/downloads (from FOX and ABc) but the difference is that you get to OWN the episode. You'll be able to watch it as many times as you want, whenever you want.

Cheapest Roku is now $60 as well. Woot for competition!

new apple tv looks nice and at a decent pricepoint. whats going to make or break it for me is how open it is on formats streamed from a computer. knowning apple it will be pretty restrictive, although the mod community did wounders for the original appletv so we'll see what magic it can work for this one.

100% agree.

It'll come down to what codecs it can decode.
