Michael still seems to be the odd one out. I've had a thought. Michael why don't you ask to stop receiving blocks (your call of course).
At least if it halts the flushes then we know the donor is mindful of the individual.

Hell, that narrows it down! There must be some talk about this on other sites by now. (Clearly the word has got to the DPC's big time. Look at the list of Dutchmen with a hand out). Nobody has reported a Japanese team suddenly taking a drug-induced leapfrog. Yeah, I reckon the PhF may have a few words d'Anglais.


Don't worry ItsmeDPC, if we lose all the blocks it'll only take a day or two to stomp all over the Macs again!! Might even be more fun if we take them twice!
 
TaiPan, the biggest competitors to both us and DPC would have to be the Russian Teams. And, as I remember, they were getting totals around 1M a few weeks ago. So either they learned how to megaflush, or just maybe the PhF was helping them, and left to help us? Anybody here speak Russian?

And a trojan doesnt need to grow exponational (still cant spell), just look at the stats of nugget. They have become quite stable, and he admitted that someone most likely made a trojan with his email addres in it.
 
OK, just looking over everything here, I see a few things.

First, the original victoms of PhF received around ~10,000 extra blocks the first day, then on average 5,000 more extra for the next two days, then slowing down to 2-3000 extra per day until leveling out around 30,000 a day.

Now the lastest victoms like myself have seen very moderate amounts of extra blocks compared to the growth of the originals, I started out receiving 1,000 a day, and have grown to about 6,000 extra right now over the course of 5 days.

Now in my mind, this says a few things, 1) PhF is a coprorate guy, and has assimilated all the computers under his command and is continuing to expand much more slowly outside his department.
2) If PhF is a trojan, here's how I see it working. He sets up a custom written server program then releases a trojan into the wild which when started for the first time, contacts this custom server for an e-mail addy and settings. Once it's done that, the client continues to crack under that addy and send blocks to the round robin d.net servers. Very hard to track! Now on this server, he has a list of e-mail address's taken from this thread and/or Mika's page 1. Now the trojan growth is slow enough that he can watch the nightly stats until each person has enough blocks, then he removes that address from the list. If he removes all address's, then it cracks for rc5@distributed.net, or to hide an exponential growth, he may have 20 rc5@d.net addy's placed in his list of e-mail address's. Using this method, it's very easy to control how many blocks everyone gets, although once the trojan sets up on a computer, it's not possible to stop it remotly, so we could see these for a very long time.
 
OK, now the reason we say the hige growth rates with the originals was because he had very few e-mail address's in his list, now he's removed those originals from the list, but added many more who've asked. It could also be affected by the trojan growth slowing down.
 
I wonder how long it will be before the PhF gets tired of hopping around our forum like a trained monkey...
 
I received 2000 unaccounted for blocks yesterday!

This is the first time. I had made a request to the PhF.

Good or bad, the PhF has sure added much exitement and mystery!

I submit that once the PhF's blocks are determined to be legit or not, that the PhF (anonymous or otherwise) be immediately inducted into the Team AnandTech Hall of Fame, or conversely, the Team AnandTech Hall of Shame!!!

 
Looks like I started to receive blocks from the Phantom Flusher on June 21. Each day I'm getting more blocks, yesterday close to 6K.

Hey PhF. If it's not to hard for you to do, good old TMR could use some blocks. Due to the heat in Utah, I have been unable to leave all of the nodes on. A little help would help greatly in getting back up to Bphantom. (tmr@xmission.com)

Your numerical assertions are discounting our team growth over the past few weeks. Even without the Phantom, we would still be over 1.1m blocks on weekdays.

You bring up an interesting point in the middle of all this. If this is a school SysAdmin who just upgraded system-wide, they could easily have access to a large herd of G4, 450's. It would take substantially fewer of these to generate this level of production. The herd would also be easier to control because it would be geographically centric.

I have just spoken to Moose (DNet) on IRC, and they are still looking into this phantom block flusher.. so I guess we just have to wait and see what happens in the next few days!!

All I know is that PhF must really have some &quot;heavy metal&quot; to be able to donate this many blocks to so many different people. We aren't just talking about 200-300 extra blocks either. To be able to give EVERYBODY 5k+ blocks a day is quite a feat. What will happen if PhF goes on vacation or something??!! TA might lose 300K+ blocks on a daily basis. PhF, if you are listening, can you wait on your vacation until we crush the /.orgs. 😉 (I feel like a kid writing a letter to Santa Clause...🙂 )

Little update: I haven't recieved any blocks yet, so I still can't predict if the Ph. F. is legit. (It rhimes!)

Hmm, what in theory could the Ph.F be using to crunch blocks like that if he/she is legit? Like said before..sh$tloads of average pc's
or a handfull of some monster machines..
If it's legit...I WANT SOME TOO!! 😛
