what are you talking about, backloading happens all the time in NFL contracts.

A lot of big contracts are backloaded.

Almost every single position hits an age plateau and then starts to to drop off, drastically for some positions. It's only once they are free agents does their real value get reevaluated and a more reasonable salary assessed for way over the hill veterans.

Contracts almost need to be structured to peak at a certain point and then start dropping off unless certain performance measures are met.

It's reasons like the Manning deal or the Albert Pujols 10 year insanity in LA that make me have little sympathy for owners. They agree to the deals.

There are a couple/few reasons. One, as mentioned, is that a deferred expense is generally preferred to an incurred expense. A similar one is sports like the NFL assume an increasing salary cap; an $8 million contract with a $130 million cap today is the same as a $8.74 million contract with a $142 million cap next year.

The biggest reason IMO is athletes (generally) get paid for what they did, not what they will do. Example: undrafted rookie WR signs a ~$112,000/yr, 3 year contract. After three years he averages 85 catches, 1200 yards and 10 TDs. In his free agent contract he's going to be paid based on what he did his first three years. He might well make $5 million per year. But nobody would have paid him $5 million per year as an undrafted rookie, even though his production would have been worth that money.

I have no idea if that's even true without any evidence, but even if it was true, who cares? My initial point was that backloading happens all the time in the NFL precisely because you can cut the players at the end of their deals, so it all turns out to be garbage years. It allows players/agents to claim that they got absolute monster deals.
 
With the injury he sustained, I think it would be a bad idea for him to suit up again. Peyton is a smart guy, I just hope he holds his health in a high regard.

"Colts owner Jim Irsay and Peyton Manning attempted to clear the air Friday about the rumored rift between them, releasing a statement saying the two were on the same page. But according to a report from NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora, that statement hasn’t changed a thing, and Manning and the Colts are done.

“According to sources who were involved in the Colts’ GM search, the organization was planning to move on from Manning weeks ago, well before this public squabble between the quarterback and his owner,” La Canfora said. “So Friday’s joint statement won’t be changing a thing.”

La Canfora says the Colts will “almost certainly” look to move Manning before this year’s NFL Scouting Combine, which is slated to get underway on Feb. 22 in Indianapolis.

The Colts are expected to take Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck with the No. 1 overall pick in this spring’s draft."
 
The rumor is that Irsay was told by doctors weeks ago that Manning won't be healthy by his bonus deadline, so when he says "Peyton will play for us if he is healthy," he knows he won't be.

If I had to guess, I'd say Irsay is begging him to retire.

The sources said Watkins examined Manning recently in Los Angeles and concluded the stability in his neck would have allowed the quarterback to play this Sunday if the nerves in his arm had regenerated to a satisfactory performance level.

Watson also instructed the quarterback to continue an aggressive rehabilitation path that provides an optimistic outlook for Manning to play in 2012. Watkins performed Manning's spinal fusion on Sept. 8, and on Dec. 1 declared that the fusion had achieved "firm fixation."

Watkins, according to the sources, joined Colts neurosurgeon Dr. Hank Feuer in clearing Manning to play. One source said that Feuer recently told Manning, "If you were my own son, I'd tell (you) to go play."

The claim seems to be that his neck is ok, and they're just waiting for his strength to return.

They're actually friends, you know. Luck has been one of the trainers at the Manning Passing Academy that Peyton and his family have in the offseason.

It was certainly part of it, but there were also comments by people (myself included) who were worried about him hurting himself trying to make a comeback. It sounds like he isn't likely to re-injure his neck.

Given that, I can understand now why Peyton is so determined to come back. This is now about whether he'll be effective, not whether he'll be crippled for the rest of his life. That, to me, is a big difference.
 
Yeah, I don't really see today's news as big news. I guess it means that if he plays again he probably won't die or get paralyzed from being hit but that's really just a small victory. All the reports are that his nerve(s) haven't regenerated and he has no velocity on his throws. If Irsay wants to cut ties with Manning I can assure you that the nerve issue is sufficient for Manning to fail a physical and not be "well enough" to play.

Why was everyone talking about manning reinjuring himself when the risk of reinjury is probably as low as someone who didn't get injured in the first place?

But Manning and others are denying that he is having problems throwing the ball. Way too many rumors and unsubstantiated stories from "sources close to Manning" going around now.

it's huge news the week before the game and just over a month from the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ date.

Where do you think the leaks & rumors are coming from? Its obvious the negative rumors are coming from the Colts. Its clear the Colts are looking to release Manning and leaking and spreading rumors about poor nerve regeneration allows them to minimize the backlash from the fans.

Yes, I think both sides are leaking info to wage a battle in the media. I think that's pretty obvious and very disappointing.

You should probably just accept the fact that Andrew Luck will be starting for Indy next year and Manning will be playing for another team.
